82 point pace under Keefe. 24 years-old. Just scored 31 in 70 games.,.. - RogerRoeper
41 point pace last season..
if you want a 'he was on a xx point pace under keefe' game - you should look at his 27 points last season as well.
and again, it's not just about the (easy) points.
it's about what he brings that is special to the team.
having marner, matthews, tavares already as top point producers - nylander's skills aren't that important to the leafs. |

Marner is a far better player than Aho and Svechnikov. - MaximusAurelius
No doubt fired as a shot at Bingo. But, I wouldn't take Marner over EITHER these guys.

Well he could have signed an offersheet for more. - RogerRoeper
That's some insider info.
Describe "more". Because a guaranteed 11 mil per for 6 years, plus his endorsement rake from being in Toronto... Is a poop load of money.
The kid chose dollars flat out. |

It's hilarious how Leaf contracts are viewed than on any other team. - RogerRoeper
No its very obvious why. No team has 3-10m+ players that have won nothing. It’s only resulted from a rich team that if that GM was with any other team it wouldn’t happen. |

Bergeron was an elite 1C
-annual Selke nominee
-2011 cup winner
Then signed 8/6.875 3yrs later
Marchand 8/6.125 6yrs after 2011 cup win
Bad precedent to back up the Brinks truck on only a hope. - Nighthawk
He had 1 single 60 point season when he signed his deal...He won 1 Selke prior to it, but that typically doesn't results in much if any pay raise. |

It's a Milly too high. Aho only got 5 yrs walking him into F.A. That 6th year is bigger dollars. Rantanen at 9.25 ...Good arguments that MM should be between 9 - 10.
He was short changed on his rookie deal by about 4.8 Milly in bonuses ....I think he got it back as part of this deal (ie. 800k over 6 years). It was brought up throughout the negotiations. - The Law
Oh yeah. i had Aho pegged to get $9-9.5 per for a couple years more. |

So why is 3 players at 10+ per a biger deal if another team spends as much on the cap? |

At least Marner has the puck and tries to do something with it, did Willie play 5v5 last night? Last guy out of the ozone - 1st guy to blow the dzone and we wonder why we give up so many shots. - Garnie
I see what you're saying, but I can't advocate for 'trying to do something' for 11 million. Because so far this series his version of that has been passed to skates or to no one. It's all equating to possession for the other team.
Either way, at that money I want a guy to be a driving force and start altering outcomes. Not being someone else's backpack. We can get that out of a 5 million dollar winger.
For the record, I'm not pushing for a Marner trade... But I'm trending towards a core shift and if that were to occur he's the slam dunk move for me. |

Marchand broke over 55 points once.....at 29 years old.
Bergeron was an annual 50-60 point player and was 30 years old. Signed until he was 38.
They were signed for what they were worth, they didn’t take less than they were worth.

Marners not stupid, at that point he knows he chose dollars over being part of winning a cup for the hometown. He damn well new that number would put him in California, or something like that one day. - joel878
Oh it was definitely about getting the most he could out of Toronto.
He and his management made that clear ...they felt like they were on par with Matthews.
I had him at 6 x 9.25 throughout which is what Rantanen got. I think their value is pretty much the same.
Aho at 8.5 is in the same sphere given he signed for one less year.
For me he's a Milly too high. This is his chance to earn it and prove he's worth every single penny. Same goes for all of them. |

The case I like to point out is Jeff O'Neill.
Decent career, but nothing special. One 41 goal season.
Finishes his career with two years in Toronto, where the Leafs didn't even make the playoffs.
He's probably making a million dollars a year now for being an idiot on TV and radio.
Do you really think he even gets a sniff at being a media guy if he had finished his career in Carolina? |

With the cap rising from 10s of millions the past few decades it is very unfair to compare cap numbers from last cup winners. Enough with that. |

This. People are lazy and never bother to consider that. Marchand was a really late developer. Marner had 94 points and signed with a 81.5 cap.. |

Why would anyone ever do otherwise?
Every single franking player takes as much money as he can.
Every

And so they should. |

I think Dubas was okay with it in the end, he’s only owed 35 million over the next 5 seasons so.... |

Well Marner admitted he got an offersheet...
And it's interesting you bring up endorsements because I am one of the few that often does. Yet everyone goes on and on about "Taxes".

let's disagree on that then.
only young FWs I'd trade Marner for in a one-for-one would be
- McDavid
- MacKinnon
- Barkov
Barzal, Eichel to me are on the exact same level as him.
Aho and Svechnikov are close to Marner, but I still prefer Marner over them.
I'd prefer Marner over Draisaitl, Pastrnak as well. |

I would agree because of his weird 8.7 fascination, but it does look better in terms of savings now than it did at the time.

Well, I wouldn't say that's entirely accurate.
For the record I'm at work, and am not willing to do the research to back the following statement up.
I think there are lots of examples around the league of guys taking less money than they could have made elsewhere, as they've decided it's not all about money because at a certain point you're just rich. Guys that want to win championships have taken hits here and there. |

They traded him to Toronto as a favour to him after his brother died.
O'Neill definitely was far from beloved in Raleigh anyway. Apart from being wildly inconsistent on the ice, he had developed a bit of a reputation as a drunk and an bumhole off the ice. |
