It would’ve been better if he did. The Leafs were doing perfectly fine drafting & improving at a very nice clip.
- Nighthawk

I'm pretty confident that Matthews will (maybe already is) top 3 center in the game and because he's in Toronto, will be overlooked and only talked about what he doesn't do. (Didn't hit 50 goals in 70 games this year?! Bust)

I hate 47 goals.

PPG players suck.

Give me two Charlie coyles or Brock Nelson’s instead.

wasnt JT's main thing on NYI was that he tried and could'nt win there.
so, he goes to another team and asks for a massive salary which inhibits the team to improve the roster in other spots...
its easy for me to talk about because its not my money but just saying...

History will say one way or the other if 33m or 40% of the cap for 3 F’s can buy a cup.

Who would bet real money on a cup that those 3 will still be united?

- Nighthawk

I certainly think there will be some movement this summer.

The Leafs have Robertson and Soupy to (hopefully) replace one of Marner or Nylander.

They need to get better on defence.

But I'll say this: I think that people are overly critical of what the Leafs have done.

They drafted Marner. They knew he was going to be good, but I don't think anyone expected him to be that good, that soon.

They then drafted Matthews because that's what 31 teams would do.

And then arguably the biggest free agent in the history of the game (talent and age-wise) became available. They signed him.

I know that many would say that was a mistake, but it was acquiring an asset for free.

If they need to now adjust, I'd rather be in a position to have to trade because they have too much talent up front.

Note: there were no significant D UFAs that the Leafs could have signed instead.

I don't know if it qualifies as a discount when you become the 2nd highest paid player in the league, behind only the best player.

Supposedly he’d turned down more.

Hopefully leafs will lose today. May finally force dubas to do something for defense. Not to mention a chance at the lottery.

I mean the other teams prove year after year making pretty passes and goals is not the most important thing to win hockey games, at leafs expense. There should be some changes to this jelly of a group.

AM, Anderson and Reilly are the only 3 untouchable in my book. If Dubas insists on playing midget hockey, fire him as well.

Great signing. I would go back and give him the same deal to play for the Bruins.

I like Anderson. But he is far from untouchable.

could be worse. could have a goalie signed for 10 mill a year for the next 100 years and he cant stop a beach ball. (Bobrovsky)

I think its fair to debate whether it was the right timing for the Leafs to do that.

but JT is worth it, at the time he is one of the best C in the game.

Meh at 22 years old just entering your career you have a lot to lose. That first contract is where you make your money these days.
- Santo_44

It's not like 6-9 million less on that first contract would have ruined his life. We are talking about a minimum 50 million dollars before the age of 27.

But somehow this kid decided he wasn't taking anything less than 50k lower than what John Tavares came off of the open market for, from his hometown team...

At some point you have to stop blaming the refs for losses. It’s every year, regardless of opponent. The league is not ‘out to get Toronto’.
- RickJames77

I'm sure we can find missed calls for the leafs too.

I also generally like to think that if you played well enough to get a large lead then it doesn't really matter about the refs. Play well enough to keep it out of their hands.

Considering skipping tomorrow's game.

Check the score after. It's either game 5 or Lafreniere time.

Skip the torture

Neids @ any age is a better FA signing... Come on, usually you're rock solid but this one is brutal.

When we signed him it basically won us a cup.. I haven't seen anything close to that from JT.

I was ridiculed & laughed at in here suggesting Tanev for Kapanen last offseason.

Does this still hold true now?

- Nighthawk

The Leafs lost a game.

Hopefully management didn't lose their minds.

All I want is consistency.

I really am sick of refs making up calls (or ignoring clear infractions) in a misguided attempt to influence the game. It happens in most games I watch, not just leaf games.

You’ll love Venezuela, you socialist swine. I have no problem with him grabbing every penny he can get. I’m certainly not going to buy his “there’s no other place I wanted to play bullpoop” and I won’t cry if they improved the team by moving him.

It’s a business.
