I remember when Boumeetser was deemed a #1 franchise D in Florida and got rave reviews. He goes to Calgary and got horribly exposed in a bigger hockey market.

It's nice in some of these markets. No one holds lack of success or mistakes against you.

- RogerRoeper

some people actually watch hockey games of teams other than Toronto.
Barkov is an young elite 2 way forward. what he lacks in scoring compared to Matthews, he compensates in other areas (defensive side PK'ing, mentality - imo Matthews seems a bit of a douche)

Under Babcock this year, Marner averaged .2222 goals per game, .77777 assists per game, and 1 point per game.

Under Keefe this year, Marner averaged .2927 goals per game, .9024 assists per game, and 1.195 points per game.

- Atomic Wedgie

Why not 1.2 points per game? Fire Keefe.

If you guy lose and win the lotto then you can trade one of the big 4 for d and be better off in the long run. I was hoping the isles went this route too although there's still time for them to blow it

anything is better than Barrie and Ceci on the ice.
- MaximusAurelius

I have to think both those cats have to be better options than Ol' Martin on the 2nd pair..

It's hilarious how Leaf contracts are viewed than on any other team.
- RogerRoeper

That's horsepoop andyou know it.

The Hawks were skewered for their huge contracts. The same for the Parise/Suter deals.

The Doughty contract was pointed at as being ridiculous as well.

Nylander's on a great contract. Matthews is perfectly fine. It's the Marner deal that's (frank)ing nuts.

Dude, these players on teams like Florida don't get any criticisms and no one ever cares if they ever sniff the playoffs. Things like that never happen in Toronto. I have seen a lot of players in small markets get hyped and they get exposed in big hockey markets.

Barkov and Ekblad fail to get their team over the hump.

This pair as a 2nd.. ?? Oh boy.. That's a recipe for a sure loss.

- dozerD10

As long as we can get out to a 3-goal lead, we should be OK, beca....

Oh.

Me too ....and even drop Spezza and put Sandin's fresh legs in as the 7th D.

Fresh legs might be important tonight.

Some players have their contracts end at better times than others.

Let’s not pretend players take less to be a winner. That’s untrue.

- Santo_44

Sedins did but it didn’t work out.
Some players won cups to get paid the big one. GM’s handing out the 10+m deals these days are the culprits. Generational talent i can see it not anyone else.

Young D-men that are good:

McAvoy
Ekblad
Provorov
Heiskanen
Seth Jones
Dahlin
Q. Hughes
Makar
Chabot
Sergachev
Dobson
Girard
Fabbro

not reallly sure any of these guys could actually be had.. Leafs are in a really tough position.
Have to look at Nylander to make an upgrade on D.

Rielly and Sandin seem the only 'sure to be there D' next season D-players on this team (+Muzzin if he rises from the land of the dead)

- MaximusAurelius

A stud D-man will cost ya...Not sure you get ANY on that list for Nylander. Certainly not the top 6-7 listed.

The Hawks actually had a horrific mistake made by Tallon that led to them trading a lot of talent in 1 summer. Won't happen in Toronto.

Does no one remember that?

And no, Doughty's deal isn't seen as that bad at all.

The hype over Leaf contracts is stupid.

Marner is owed 900K next year

10 the next

8 the next

8 the next

8 the next

In a league where half the teams can barely spend to the cap and some barely spend to the cap floor that contract is a lot better than you think.

I pointed this out many times in the past here and got jumped on for that aside from the odd poster. I spend far, far more time being critical of the contracts that Benning has handed out.

I gotta say...i dont hate it

I've long told people those July 1st bonuses Leafs pay that people laugh at increase the trade value of their players.
