Kubalik - You pretty much need to sign him. Cut the best deal you can. With cap freeze he may take a reasonable bridge deal.
Strome - Only 23. A 3c that could play 2c if one of your top two centers gets injured. Can also play wing. Not a bad thing to have on the team. Decent middle 6 player. Try to sign him for $2.1 mil for a couple of years. If he gets a better offer take the 2nd round compensatory pick and the cap space.
Koekkoek - 26 years old. 3rd pairing or 7th defender. Not bad to have around so that you do not have to rush the younger defenders. Offer $1.3 mil if he gets a better offer take a 3rd round pick and the cap space.
Caggiula - 26 years old. Concussion history. Can play up and down your line up. Does not shrink in big games. Offer $1.5. If he gets a better offer take a 3rd round pick and the cap space.
Crow - 35 years old. Concussion history. I think they try to sign him for about $4 mil for a year or two.
Subban - 26 years old. If you sign Crow I think you need to let him walk. You have Delia and Lankinen. You can always find a backup goalie. (Darling, Niemi)

I'm a believer that if you try to control destiny things have a tendency to backfire on you. Play to win, if you win this series great if you don't, have a chance at picking 1st or in the top 3rd of the league. Many wanted them to tank last year and they played well and ended up with the 3rd pick in the draft, so play to win baby, even though i didn't think they deserved to win game 3, i cheered every time i saw the back of the net move in the 3rd period. - BetweenTheDots

The one that has Ekblad, Strallman, Matheson, and Yandle tied up long term for a combined $24.5 mil.?

You bet. Like I said... I've been all over the place with what I wanted for an outcome. - Tyler Cameron
I understand everyone has a multitude of feelings , emotions. I became more excited when we learned that the number 1 pick was still in play, but after watching this teams play games 2 and 3 I'm inclined to think that even if they move past Edmonton and lose the opportunity at the number 1 overall pick only to get bounced in the next round and get a 16th pick ?
Obviously Chicago is a team in a rebuilding process and the difference between 1-10 and a 16th or 17th pick is huge in the quality, readiness and who's available at that point.
That's why as much as it's great for these kids to get some experience and the team to further evaluate their own needs, reality is crystal clear that this team won't catch lightning in a bottle and have a deep run.

I would feel much more comfortable signing him if he was just a wee bit better at receiving hard passes while in flight to enter zones.
I know he's a gun, but, I think there is a lot to having a well rounded player who has all the attack tools if my team is opening the check book...

Great breakdown of all of those guys, Doh.
However, even a guy like Koekkoek at $1.3M might be toouch depending on Kubalik, Strome and Crow.
Caggiula might even be tough at $1.5M.
The Hawks are going to be really tight against the cap. They may be forced to use guys like Carlsson (instead of K4) and Hagel (instead of Caggiula).

This blog lost me when it labeled Kampf/Carpenter/Highmore a "shutdown" line
Unless the shutdown means shutting down any chance of getting the puck out of the zone, then I agree
The whole 4th line is made up of forwards that shouldnt be anywhere higher than a 13th forward |

Just curious your arguing to resign guys whom are either placeholders or avg at best.
Kubalick I agree we resign
Strome I'm not sold on him but as a 3rd line center if resigned cheap ok
Slater and drake are expendable
Crawfords age and injury history I'd let him walk or retire. Chicago doesn't have much cap room to throw at a 36nyear old guy with a history of concussions.
Chicago has alot of blue line kids that potentially ready
You have shaw and Seabrook to contend with
That's my take.

Listen, I like Strome for what he is right now and I think he can get better.
He's still just 23 years old.
However, the Hawks can play hard ball a bit now with the emergence of Dach.
Personally, I would sign him to a 2-year deal... no more than that because then he and Dach come up at the same time.
If you can convince Strome to take a 2 year, 3M AAV deal, you do it. I just think as much as Strome likes it in CHI with his bestie DeBrincat, his agent won't let him make a deal like that.
I suspect they are looking for $4M+ AAV. |

It should be interesting to see what happens with Kubalik. I don't think he gets more than $4.2 from anyone. That would cost the offering team a 1st and a 3rd (and they would need to have the cap space and the draft picks). The Hawks would have to look hard at that deal. I think he signs a short term deal between $2.5 mil and $4 mil. I think he is worth it.
The one factor I consider with Kubalik is that it seems like Toews kicks it up a gear playing with Kubalik. So if you lose Kubalik you might also get a lesser Toews.

Looking like a high temperature of 64 Fahrenheit today in Edmonton. Cloudy and rainy. 54 there right now.
'Hawks are playing in game 2 of the day there.
My guess is ice quality will be better today than it was in games 2 and 3. Which is a good thing because I think they struggled more with ice conditions than the Oilers did.
We'll see how it plays out. |

This line showed the signs of their shutdown capability in game 1 (as well as throughtout the regular season).
The stats backed that up.
Could there be better - and more talented guys on there? Sure.
But there have been some good signs. And yes, I'll admit, some bad play as well.
Next year the 4th line could be better but will likely still have these 3 in the mix. Shaw might find himself there, or maybe guys like Entwistle or Hagel.
We'll see.

Not rooting against them, however.....
Landing the #1 then:
1. Trading it to Ott for 3 @5....
2. Trading it to Ott for 3 and Tkachuk....
3. Trading it to Ott for 5 and Tkachuk....
#1 overall would get 2 pieces for this current group......

If he signs an offer sheet for more than $4.2 mil the signing team gives him the money and gives the Hawks a 1st and a 3rd. I don't see that happening. If it does, "See ya". If a team offers him more than $2.1 mil the Hawks would get a 2nd round pick. If the Hawks held firm at $3 mil and someone offered him between $3 and $4 mil I would have to think hard on that. But I would lean toward letting him walk, especially if the offering team is likely to have an early-to-mid round position in the 2nd round of the draft. |

Strome has only played in 2 seasons in the NHL at 23 yrs old
While he needs to learn to pick his skates off the ice when he skates...he has talent and can contribute
It doesnt do JC any favors continuing to bring in 10-11 new players every year - especially when the team is young
Have to give the coach and a 23 yr old player more than 1.5yrs playing together before they keep turning over the roster or neither will have a chance
If they trade him in. "Hockey trade" - to improve the team, that's one thing. But to claim he cant contribute or trade him for a different "reclamation project" makes zero sense to me |

“We’re going to offer sheet Strome” ...said no GM, ever.
But, agreed, if that were to happen - Hawks should take the compensatory picks. |

I'd have to agree with you there and I don't think the Hawks can afford him at that price.
Kubalik is going to cost you more than they thought so that factors in to next year.
