expected goals and saves above expected are silly stats...yes, they show that teams are taking shots from specific areas that project probable goals and goals against within some given algorithm...but it doesn't tell the whole story as to the type of shot, who's shooting from that spot, was a player being dogged and thrown off just a bit because of a defender...was there a screen, etc...
- Michael Pachla

You can expect to get a good look at a t bone by sticking your head up a cow's ass but wouldn't you rather take James Tanner's word for it?

And I agree 100% of this post. It does paint a picture though in relative terms.

It takes those things into account.

I don't think it's gospel but it sheds a light on a lot

Only the elite of the elite consistently outperform their expected goal totals year after year. Eichel is one of them

strong work ethic can overcome a lot of defects with a roster

A hockey team that works hard? What’s that? I can’t remember the last time I saw that in Buffalo...

I thought they had added into the mix the player shooting the puck and their shooting percentage compared to the location of the shot, but I could be wrong on that.

Saying they are silly is going to far. Because it does not tell the entire story does not mean it is worthless.

You could also post a pic of gallant. He had some young teams playing pretty hard hockey. I’d still send Ralph upstairs and hand the coaching reins to Gallant. I know it’s not the “lean” move. But if you could get those three (Ralph, Adams, Gallant) on the same page for roster surgery... you might actually put together a young scrappy team.

it's a stat that they use in soccer, which is a totally different game when you consider how things can change in a split second in hockey...

i get the idea, and maybe i went too far with the "silly" part, but that comes from seeing too many people use that stat religiously and presenting it as gospel...yes, shots from certain areas do lead to more goals than from other areas...and yes, goalies should save goals from certain areas more than other areas...

The Sabres have to stop taking other team's garbage and overpaying them to lose in Buffalo. We already did that with Frolik, Bogo, are doing it with Skinner; Okposo. I think it's time to develop a new business model.
- GilPerreault11

I forgot about Moulson, and Ville Leino!! They definitely need a new way of thinking. They have taken on a lot of crap!

There are probably even more. The more you look at it their pro scouts sucked and deserved to get fired. Thank you the Pegula's, too bad you didn't do it sooner!!

$4.125m seems like a hefty hit for a 32 yr. old forward whose offensive contributions seem to be taking a dive

and he has a nmc

- Michael Pachla

It certainly feels like cap space is more valuable than it's ever been. It's hard to state that strong enough that it just doesn't sound like hyperbole.

If I'm taking on bad money, I want a lot more value than that.

Um, with few or no bodies in the arena unless there is a vaccine, and the need to get a 2nd line center I vote BS and lean.

You would think relatively speaking. Lean for Toronto is thicker for other teams.

Lean for Toronto is thick for MOST teams.

Meh. Whatever. If they get a 2C, I can live with the rest of what they give us (a guy like Borgen in the bottom pair, or Tage on the 3rd line. I'm firing off the top of my head).

Whatever they've BEEN doing hasn't worked, so...

Very well said.

Larsson is going to look great there.

He’d be perfect there. They score enough to where if he has 0 goals it doesn’t matter
