I agree with gergeswillems. Murray will cost and asset plus a good chunk of salary when there are cheaper options who are just as good, if not better, and can be acquired for free. He will also unnecessarily tie up a roster spot and salary for years.
I don't understand the reasoning behind paying for an average-at-best placeholder. Murray is too slow to ever be a top 10 goalie unless he is on a world-beater team and doesn't have to do much. Other parts of his game need work, too (positioning, rebound control, glove side, etc.). He's never been a good puck handler.
I'll be shocked if JR gets more than a 3rd for Murray.
As for Schultz, again, why? He's also a FA, btw. It's like signing Trevor Daley. If you're looking for a vet placeholder until the kids are ready, ok. But you don't need to pay for a guy like that and he's certainly not going to show the kids how to play hockey. He's pretty terrible at this point, even on the 3rd pairing. - Hockey66
For sure, I know he’s UFA ( I made that note). The defense is just so bad right now. Our vets were hurt for so much of the year. Having a Dman to give even a little bit of on ice presence while the kids work their way into the league would just be a welcome addition. For sure, it’s a stop gap and you shouldn’t give up too much. I was just doing a package trade for his negotiating rights (before the FA window) and Murray’s. It’s well noted though, he is having some struggles. I really appreciate the feedback!

If injured vets were a problem for the Wings last season, then definitely steer clear of Schultz. |

If I seem gruff, it's because I'm still fired up about the Pens disgraceful exit two years in a row now and all of the stupidity coming out of the organization. I'm happy to give you a Pen's fan perspective and I understand if you aren't completely knowledgeable about our players. I have a hard enough time just keeping up with the Pens roster players, let alone Pens prospects or players on other teams. |

As many posters have stated Murray seems to have lost his confidence. The only way the Red Wings acquire Murray would be on the cheap, otherwise go the UFA route. |

Not at all! I just thought that was a killer one liner! Drop the mic and take a bow sir!
I am so grateful that you’re popping in. It’s awesome to get that “home team” perspective. You’re passionate about your club and have way more knowledge on hand that I do when it comes to the construction. Well done |

Every athlete has the “mental battle”, but no one’s struggles are more obvious than a pitcher, Quarterback and a goalie. When a goalie is an inch or two out of position it’s a disaster. I hope these guys have a sports psychologist (or regular psychologist) they trust. It’s hard to get out of your own way and move ahead sometimes. Add a ton of pressure and it just snowballs |

I had a mental battle watching Jimmy Howard play. I doubt I'll ever recover. |

Dude, the mental scars I have are life-altering..... Wasn't a battle, it was a BOTTLE (or more.... ) watching him play "Be Like Swiss Cheese" every time in net. My therapist said....well, it wasn't good
I think it'd be a decent deal for at least a year, see what happens. What've we got to lose? Another 49 games?!?!?! |

If Jimmy Howard ever plays another game for the Detroit Red Wings, I'll have a nervous breakdown. I can't take it. I just can't. |

Why would Yzerman buyout Jack Johnson@50% when he can just sign a UFA goalie? If he's going to buy a player out his last name should be Abdelkader or Nielsen. |

Ummmmm, JJ at 50% w/ Matt Murray for a turd,..... er 3rd.
OK, why not keep JJ around for a year or 2 for that price, and if he warrants a buy-out then by all means........
Letang might be another possibility.....he has 2 yrs at $7.5M Pitt retains some salary and we get a pick as well and send back joe Hicketts or Erne or what?

I see no reason the Penguins would trade Letang for prospects. |

I agree on this one. He’s an important part of the core still. It would have to be an impact player, but still a hard guy to give up. |

Nah. Matt Murray has regressed. It’s a buyers market for tendies. His value ain’t poop. Pens need a cheap RW since they just announced they won’t spend to the cap. |
