Most of the haters would be fine with that deal. The big divide on Sam here is pretty minuscule when it comes to salary.

Hawerchuk, who died Tuesday at age 57, has a massive legacy as a player, but also a huge one as a coach.

Since 2010, he directed the Ontario Hockey League's Barrie Colts and led big names such as Florida's Aaron Ekblad, Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele and Carolina's Andrei Svechnikov.

Sabres prospect Matej Pekar scored 14 goals for Barrie in the 2018-19 season and paid tribute to Hawerchuk on Twitter Wednesday.

"Dale was one of the best mentors I’ve ever had on and off the ice," said Pekar, a Czech who was Buffalo's fourth-round pick in 2018. "He was a great coach and even better person. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to play for Barrie Colts, Dale. You will never be forgotten."

If I were Sam, I'd take the 2 at $5.9m.
After those 2 seasons are completed, he becomes a UFA when the Cap will begin to recuperate and a new TV contract are in the books.
He should then earn his payday at age 26.
