There's going to be so much movement and it'll be from COVID losses, not the overhyped "Flat Cap". Majority of teams will cut 10+ million from their budgets I bet.

Leafs can trade Andersen and Kapanen for Price.
.
Trade Johnsson to Anaheim for Kesler and a 3rd rd pick, put Kesler on LTIR..

Nylander is a modern day version of Bobby Ryan (as in overvalued player that won't achieve anything in his NHL career).

the combination of all those trades left us both worse in the short-term and worse in the long-term.

1- Marleau needed to be traded to free up cap space for to sign Marner(Lou signed Marleau)
2- Kadri had to be traded because he cost to much against the cap for a 3rd line C, and he got suspended twice in the playoffs
3- Zaitsev had to be traded because he was being paid too much for far too long (Lou signed Zaitsev)
So, it actually didn't hurt as much as you think. - PatC80
kadri, brown and a 1st out. nothing to show for it in other than 1 year of barrie the bust.
we gave up a lot of assets and missed the playoffs. we were on pace for less points in the regular season than the year before. might as well have bridged marner and not made any of those trades. we would have been better off. and marner wouldn't have cost us much more in 2 years anyways.
we got rid of zaistsev at 4.5M x 5; but got stuck with kerfoot at 3.5 x 4.
was a terrible offseason last year.

Kadri - 4.5 x 3
Zaitsev - 4.5 x 5
Brown - 2.1
marleau - 6 x 1

holl left him completely hanging. he should be back riding buses next year for that move. marincin got caught flat footed in no man's land. mainly because holl left him hanging. and then freddy muffed it probably thinking a pass was coming.
this play just highlighted the need for a big overhaul in the bottom half of the line-up. - Tumbleweed
People are going to make mistakes in this game, it's not an excuse to give something up that would be horrendous with or without said mistake. |

Luke Glendening fits that criteria. If Detroit retains 50% of his $1.8M cap hit, then a Glendening for Kapanen swap saves Toronto $2.3M in cap space. Glendening for Johnsson saves $2.5M. That’s the space Toronto desperately needs to invest on the blueline. Yzerman may even pry a draft pick out of Dubas if we retain salary on Glendening.

Gotta ask, did you think a team would help the Leafs out with Marleau?
If those moves were not made, the Leafs could not afford Marner and his 10.9M cap hit.
So, if you feel Kadri, Marleau and Zaitsev would be more valuable then Marner, well, you're entitled to your opinion.

except he's not Leafs 4th best FW.
Tavares - Matthews - Marner.
Hyman.
Robertson (soon)
all of more value to this Leafs team.
Leafs knew when they drafted Nylander that they were taking a risk with his attitude (his father was a pain in the ass "all about me" player). Seems Nylander is a more sympathetic person, but definitely not a winner. |

Kerfoot - Johnsson - Nylander could all have been traded.
Should have kept Marleau and the 1st rounder.
Should have kept Brown.
Should have kept Zaitsev.

Way too early to claim Robertson will be better soon. He's 18. Nylander just got 31 goals in 70 games.
Should Leafs have drafted Jake Virtanen instead? The pick has worked out fine.

And yet who led the charge for that 3 goal comeback the Leafs did vs Columbus?
That's right.
Captain Nylander.
I rest my case.

I would agree with you if you could understand the difference between a a trade for hockey purposes and a trade for cap purposes.
