I was just gonna reply to you on Ek's thread about the call on Sanheim. Might as well do it here.
Everything you say there (Samheim lefty, turned to take the hit) I agree with. I also think he sold the dazed part well, given that he was on the ice a minute later.
But Kotkaniemi (Jesus, kid needs a nickname) also could have let up, and did have a second to see the #s and did (marginally but clearly) leave his skates.
Problem with calling it boarding is that its usually a major. Major + head injury (he was bleeding) = GM (no discretion).
So, Lee could have called a relatively rare boarding minor. Or even a x-check minor.
Really though, it should have been somewhere in between that and what was awarded. Problem is, there seems there is no leeway to assess a double minor if you call it boarding or cross-check minor. The presence of blood etc is not relevant unlike high-sticking.
So, one way around it would have been to call two minors: boarding+cross-check. 4 mins. Unusual, but just under the circumstances.
What do you guys think? - PT21
Btw, his nickname right now is KK.
And a boarding minor is a possibility and was the right call imo.
It all happened very fast and Sanheim put himself in a vulnerable position. KK didn't have much time to react but the result makes it a penalty for sure.
It's the ref's call to make it a major penalty. When Chris Lee saw blood, he panicked and called it this way. I believe his call was more about how it looked than the actual play by KK.

Right, that's what we're all saying.
I have yet to see a decent replay of Gallagher getting hit.

Given the chain of events that got triggered in a playoff game to a star player with no previous history I am aware of, I would have preferred 2 mins to what was awarded.
But that would have been too lenient imo.
Find a way to award a double minor since major+head=ejection. |

Hart did not look good at all. He should have been pulled. At least 3 of the goals were weak goals. You could tell early he wasnt on his game. If AV makes the switch after the 2nd or 3rd goal, we probably make off with the win - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Hart was not his best but he was not very bad. Half the team was either playing poorly or a non-factor. That is not a winning recipe against a desperate team facing elimination. It’s a team game.

I don't hate the idea as it would have let KK remain in the game.
But I feel like making it a major makes more sense than a double minor.
I don't like the call, would have made a different one, but I understand why it was called that way.
While a double minor would have been a head scratcher.

Niskanen gets a hearing today. So i wonder who's right.
Niskanen's play had a lot more intent into it.
e: and even went unpenalized with the ref 10 feet away. Unreal. |

Well, to be fair (though about the ref being 10 feet away): that Gallagher injury never happens if they call the original x-check by Gallagher on Nisky 2 secs before. Pretty vicious, though on the back. Def a minor. |

It’s a joke how badly the Habs organization wants him suspended. Tweet the video, yet blatantly cut the part where Nisky gets crosschecked |

It was a great pass to a guy all alone in front during a complete defensive breakdown. He over played it but it was a very difficult save/scenario to begin with. Not hanging that one on the goalie - ClaudeFather
It's of course not completely on the goalie but the context of the post was about Hart.

I agree. The refs just blew it all last night. And it was was for both sides. Habs got away with stuff too for sure.
And then they call the non factor hooks |

We all know he has a hearing.
On the face of it (no pun intended), not a suspendable incident imo.
BUT: He did have a similar incident with Crosby 3 years back and had a hearing then too, and got away with nothing.
I would say its 50-50 - PT21
Any direct contact with a cross check to a players face is a suspendable incident. It is incompetent to say that it isn't. He is going to be suspended. It's just a question of how many games.

Gallagher cross-checks Niskanen from behind. Definitely a penalty but a minor.
Play happens a few seconds later. Niskanen is looking for retaliation. Gallagher is just turning away from one player (I think Provorov?) and Niskanen cross-checks him in the upper body area. A little unlucky that Gallagher turned right then but definitely a penalty. - PT21
If by "upper body area" you mean MOUTH - then you are correct.

They gave away the game thru lapses in discipline, temporary loss of focus in net and youthful mistakes.
I guess we forget how green some of these kids really are. - Tomahawk
In my opinion by far it's not the green kids that are the issue in this series. It is the veteran players.

😂
He turned and also bent 0.5 secs before. I meant the cross check was intended for an upper body area. Its not clear it was intended where it landed up.
He got Crosby in the face 3 years ago, probably worse, and got away with a hearing and no suspension. That will probably have a bearing on the issue.

he did overplay it but it was a bang, bang, bang passing play. The fact that thompson made the first tape to tape pass to Drouin made Hart move one way, then the nice pass back the other way, then Hart overplayed it |

Way harsh dude. Thompson made a soft pass expecting Hagg to slide over and retrieve. Drouin jumped it, as all the Habs have been doing this series. |

My original instinct yesterday was 2+2. But apparently, there is no way you can do that with a boarding because there is blood, like the way you can with a high stick.
So, either a boarding minor or a boarding major. The latter, with visible head injury, automatically means ejection.
Or, what I suggested. |

I’m still disgusted that we lost last night. Those two goals we let up shortly after scoring are just inexcusable. |
