Everytime I read the Leafs thread I lose brain cells!
Kapanen is a good player and has a fair contract/term 2 x 3.2 million. He has averaged 16 goals/36 points per 82 games in 202 career games so talk of Ekblad, Morrisey etc straight up is just dumb and frankly typical of most posters on this thread. He will fetch a good player or picks in trade but not a 1st pairing Dman Cmon!

Put a nicer way: people don't seem to get that good d-men come at a premium just because of low supply and obviously high demand. If the Leafs shore up their D, we ain't gonna be happy with the price that it costs in terms of Forwards going the other way.

this

it’s gonna be a huge trade like greedy willi and little b!tch for jones + for example

Proving, that many fans and clubs for that matter, fall in love with their players leading them to overvalue guys.

I get it man. But no one has any cap space either. Who is trading a pick for Johnsson so the Leafs get cap space?
- aminnes

Wings might.

Ya there are a few, literally a few that might after they sign their guys have a little bit of space, but why would they spend it on a leaf player rather than holding it to gain leverage for a sought after UFA? Not a lot of teams will have money for UFAs.

Such as? The cap is fast and teams still haven't signed their FAs. Jersey?
- aminnes

Are you asking who will be budget team and not a cap team?

The Pens are a budget team next year according to every source they have. Yeah.

The rich teams of the league that drag the other 20 teams by their asses every year will be the only cap teams.

They don't need to take on the full cap hit.

Plenty of deals to be made for guys with cheaper cap hits but higher salaries.

AJ for cheaper cap hit.

I fully expect a lot of older, higher priced players to be sent to Robidas Island this year.

I would think that benefits a cash rich team like the Leafs.

Pens are up against the cap already going into next year. Who on the Leafs has a significant cap hit but low actual dollars?

Liljregren for me.

He is not a top prospect anymore.

3rd pairing is likely his ceiling...

For me he is an attractive piece to move the needle in a deal as some team might be willing to take a shot at him.

I can't see UFA's desperately wanting to sign with a tire fire team like the Red Wings. Trading is a more realistic option for Yzerman.

IMO always wait until a d man is a bit older. It takes them longer to really get good at it. It took Parayko until 25 to really hone his craft for example.

Unless they’re going after AP, I don’t see the Leafs specifically trying to trade for cap space anyway. I agree it’s a terrible market to try to do that. It’s more likely that they try to trade $s out for $s in and find $7M worth of D to replace Barrie and Ceci. (If they keep Ceci, it has to be for less.)

Hockey wise no, but if the Wings are one of 5 teams with money a lot of guys will take it rather than less elsewhere.

Which raises a bit of an issue as the Leafs players didn't perform well and therefore a hockey trade $ for $ might not get a lot back.
