I want the Islanders. After watching a team of short cutters and quitters it’s refreshing to see a team play the right way.

Leo Komorov- Pague- Ross Johnston. Better than 3 of the pens 4 lines this post season. Sullivan needs to quit. (frank)ing embarrassing.

I think the Pens should start putting a high premium on elite offensive and PP skills. It's always such a mismatch when the opposition has at least one offensively gifted defenseman on just about every pairing and the Pens don't. Really we just have Letang and his offense is in decline.

We always talk about other lines chipping in on offense but how about the defense for a change? This is why I consider Petts fringe 2nd pairing and Dumo fringe 1st pairing. Does their defense really make up for their lack of offense? Pens had one defenseman in the top 62 in scoring. Marino was 63rd. I like Marino's potential to score more, but I think we should always be looking to add more defensive scoring.

- Hockey66

Short term, I'd say Marino climbs that list. He spent significant time either injured or on a 3rd pair with JJ. Also consider the Pens secondary scorers will always get less PP time than other teams and that takes a little off their totals.

Long-term I'd agree and would like to add back an offensive defenseman. I just don't see that player at 15 overall.

The comment on Pronman was just explaining how he values defenseman. Guys with high end offensive skills but defensive questions will rate higher than all around players (same with forwards really).

In all my years watching hockey Barry Trotz's Islanders are one of the worst teams to not score on first haha. That's a complement to them. I know statistically the outcome of a the game usually favors the team that scores first across the board but the Isles take it to another level. I cant cheer for them though. I cried in 1993 when they ended Mario and Co's bid for a 3peat, the Volek overtime goal in game 7 just took wind right out of me as an 11 year old. It was so brutal to watch haha. They swept us last season. There's been some real nasty Pens games involving that franchise. For me now preferably, with the crap left in the East, it's Bolts make the final and lose to anyone left in the West, preferably the Nucks, but I dont mind any of the teams left over there.

It's pretty incredible he only has one Cup. He is definitely the best coach in the league.
- Victoro311

Yea honestly he's had some really good Predator teams. Really good goalies too with Vokoun and Rinne. It is surprising.

Its more about the players than the coach. The Islanders don't have huge star power but they have a lot of really solid players. And I think a lot of them have a chip on their shoulder from being overlooked.

Not taking anything away from Trotz but even though the team lacks star power, the type of players they have are a perfect fit for his systems.

They don't have any players that are totally overmatched. The Pens had several players that didn't belong on the ice against the Habs. Like you say... Most if not all are solid NHL players.

Apparently Domi and Poehling deleted references to the Canadians (the site was in French and linked by Kingerski.)

Domi we've talked about a lot. Poehling is a 2017 late 1st round center considered a 2 way player though stronger defensively who started to break in with the Habs this year though with limited minutes. Was considered their #3 prospect coming in and probably would be 1 or 2 for us. I'd imagine if he wanted to leave (same as Domi) it's because he's blocked at center.

I don't think we're a great trade partner though. They want an impact forward, a 2nd pair LHD, and a backup goalie in that order. I see them able to swing a trade for a top forward first with their best assets.

And for the Sullivan critics, remember one thing, the Penguins are the hardest team to coach in the league.

They have star players like Crosby, Malkin and Letang who you don't want to neuter with a system, even though you want to run 1 system.

They have had massive success and the majority of the team have been paid. Takes away from the hunger a bit.

They always have late season additions and major shakeups that quickly need to be synergized.

They have a very weak depth and rarely have pipeline talent that can be brought up with the teams systems and philosophies.

I'm not saying Sullivan is the best coach ever but there is no wonder why the team with the most success over the last 20 years has had so many coaching changes. I'm still glad the Pens have him.

See, this is where my Pettersson trade idea comes in to play. If they sent Pettersson and also had them take Hornqvist (obviously other things would need to be part of this deal), they could make room for Krug.

They would still need to ship out some more salary for Domi's salary, but maybe that would force their hand on JJ. Now, I don't think it's completely crazy to think they would take Hornqvist either with some sweetening.

Im not saying youre wrong. But i think just not signing shultz and sheary, puts us very close to have enough for Krug, 8.5M.

Kinda sorta. The Pens currently have a little over $12M free. What we don't know is what RFAs they will re-sign and for how much. Plus, you can already knock that down to $11M considering DeSmith will be back up.

Murray, Rod, McCann, Simon, Lafferty. They obviously don't take up $11M lol, but that could wind up eating up a good $7/$8ish M.

They gotta move Bjugs and his 4mil and If I was GM I wouldn't worry about those guys.(McCann would be my top keep) I would get the best players I could and let the young kids in.

Jarry needs to be added to that list as well but I'd take Murray off it. Cant see Pens signing both Murray and Jarry now...but you never know.

That 11 mill free could become 18.35 mill free if they could find a way to dispose of JJ and Bjugs. If they could rid of those two and get one or two ELC'ers in the lineup they'd have space for a serious impact player or maybe even two very good players.

Right, that's why I quoted the source. Domi has been widely reported as being unhappy about wanting to stay at center. Poehling would be new but that makes sense for similar reasons.

It's weird how everyone thinks other teams will want Pettersson and Hornqvist for roles they don't. Hornqvist is certainly not a fit as an impact forward and not a salary they'd want. They have A LOT of key RFAs to deal with soon as well as key vets like Tatar and Perry. Also unsure of which year Hornqvist's NTC becomes a partial.

I don't think Pettersson is the key piece that will get you Domi and not sure what else you are offering. Honestly if I'm them I'm aiming much higher.

As far as trading him and signing Krug, might be good if you can pull it off, but no guarantee he signs here, so hopefully you have several other targets or else that makes JJ 2LD. I personally wouldn't move Pettersson unless I had another LD signed. I don't really have a big desire to move him, but their are guys I'd consider it for.

Its certainly an interesting proposal, but I think Krug is a guy Montreal would absolutely covet. Now, if Montreal was out of the running and they Pittsburgh was all in on Krug, they might be inclined to facilitate something for Pittsburgh to burn Boston.

But cap space aside, you are extremely short selling Hornquist if you think he is a salary dump. I think he is a guy Montreal would love to have, I wouldn't be shocked if Horny and Domi were a 1 for 1 trade.

Ideally for Domi you are looking at Petterson and McCann. He was demoted to the 4th line in the playoffs. I think Montreal likes a lot of their other younger players better.

Can't remember who interviewed JR. I think it was Madden. He asked specifically about McCaan. JR had an interesting take... He said (paraphrasing)... Not sure exactly what they have in him. Also said he's not sure they can afford him. I think he indicated something in the 3 - 4 mil range. He definitely hedged his bets on whether McCaan is a priority.

I'd like to keep him too, but if he's not a top 6 wing (preferably RW), should 3.5mil be spent in another way? I kind of think yes. He's not jumping over Guentz or Zucker and he's not a 3c. Do the Pens pay that for a 3rd line LW who can possibly jump up if needed. Maybe. Food for thought.

I'm fine with spending 2.5/3 mill on a player with versatility like that. 4 mill maybe not but then again, how I feel about spending 4 would depend on all the other moves and the roster make up. If say they rid of JJ then 4 mill for McCann is much, much easier to digest. If JJ is still there, it is not. Same for Bjugs, really.

I dont think McCann is getting much more than 3 mill, which would be over a double up in raise from what he made this past season.
