Tyler Cameron: My Favourite Blackhawks Team
I thought I would switch things up with this blog. I'm putting a pause on the bubble, goaltending, and future Blackhawks talk and going back in time to select my favourite Hawks team.
Essentially, I went over every individual season from 1989-90 to 2020 and made my list. It's nothing scientific or wasn't exactly driven from their statistics with the Blackhawks, more just how I "felt", who did I truly enjoy the most. Who did I like watching play and who I have enjoyed following over the 30 years as a Blackhawks fan? |

Back to hockey...
No mention of Stumpy? Or was he earlier than '89. Have to look. I know like Daze he was injured a fair amount but was able to extend his career for a while. I'd take Steve Thomas as my LW over 55...maybe just me tho.
Edit - He fits the time frame. |

Also, you may have to answer to BeaverWarrior for not including Christian LaFlamme on the list and Darth's going to be pissed there's no mention of Rusty. |

I did like Steve Thomas. He just didn't stand out as much. That 40 goal season in 89-90 was huge though. |

I love your picks! I would only swap Daze out for big Al Secord and place him with Savard and Larmer (while I started watching in the late 60's, I have has season ticket since 1979) and Oduya for Steve Smith who with Chelios was the best tandem I have seen followed very closely by Seabrook and Keith. |

I go back too far to pick a starting lineup without leaving lots of very good players off the list. My favorite player back then (mid 60's) was Chico Maki (#16, Bobby's original number before he switched to #9). But, here I go:
B.Hull-Mikita-Hossa
Panarin-Toews-Kane
Secord-Savard-Larmer
Amonte-Roenick-Byfuglien
Keith-Seabrook
Chelios-Hjalmarsson
Wilson-Suter
Belfour

I just remember him as a guy that was bit of a pain to play against when he was Leaf and although Vaive was the centerpiece of the deal that sent Secord to TOR, I ended up really liking Thomas.
Was tough to play against and a cannon of a shot. Initially didn't like the deal that sent him to the Isles but Brent Sutter was a solid 2 way center for the Hawks and helped them get to the SCF vs the Pens.
Great list though. Murray Craven. Forgot about him but also liked him as a Hawk. Did you mention Bernie Nichols? |

A guy I grew up with went to the blue jackets/hawks game after that strip bar incident. He texted me after the game and said " must have been a rough game in St. Louis the other night. A couple of guys looked like they had the poop beat out of them". I replied telling him about the incident. He lived about a mile from the club and said he was woken up by a bunch of sirens that night.
I'm glad to see Fleury has seemingly righted his ship. But back in the day he was out of control. Good luck to him in the future. |

No, I meant to include him in my "others" list. Nichols had some serious skill. |

You beat me to it FourOrr. I was going to mention Al Secord at 3LW instead of Daze.
Guess I have to get up earlier. LOL.

An interesting exercise would be to find out these players' top salaries while with the Hawks, adjust it for inflation, and determine the cap hit for this lineup.

Yeah Bernie was a fun player to watch and defenitely enjoyed his days in a Hawk uni.
Back to Stumpy, I remember when he was with the Hawks and the team after a game in BUF had been out enjoying some beverages apparently when Thomas reportedly stopped en route back to the hotel or maybe another bar and relieved himself on a building.
A cop found him in the alley during the act and informed him that the building he was peeing on was a BUF Police Station. |

Would be fun (and a lot more work) to make an all time roster using guys who, assuming they’re all in their prime, would likely be able to fit under today’s salary cap.
Then you’d really have to do a deep dive on some of the best role players/under appreciated guys in team history. |

It may not be as bad as you think. Remember when Bobby Hull jumped to the WHA in 1972 for one million dollars? Using this on line inflation calculator that is about 6.2M in today's dollars. That's not even Debrincat money.

Are these players that the Hawks had in their prime or players the Hawks had at any given time in their prime
As much as like Dennis, built to win, Doug Gilmourwould be my 3rd line center
And Dominik Hasek would beat out Eddie the eagle |

I’m guessing that it’s players the Hawks has in their prime. Otherwise you can get guys like:
Paul Coffey
Wendell Clark
Theo Fleury
Boris Mironov (just making sure y’all are awake)

Peter Bondra scored his 500th with the Hawks! One of the maybe 5 he scored for us if I remember correctly. |

I'm a little bit older than you I guess so I would have your list but have D. Wilson in for Oduya, and Zhamnov for Daze...if I cant put Zhamnov in at wing then I'll take Panarin |

Yes it would be a lot of work, but it would keep us occupied and not veer off to other subject matter.
Enter a player's name in the capfriendly search box and you can find his playing history and annual salary. For example, Denis Savard's last season with the Hawks was 1989-90 and he made "only" 525K. Using the inflation calculator I posted earlier, that's $1,041,000 in today's dollars. That's close to Kampf's salary!
Amazing how those guys were relatively underpaid back then.
