Hey J, think you're thinking of Smith on drafting Russians (Vorobiev, Yakubov, Babchuk).

Afa as Skille and Beech go, imagine if Tallon had hit home runs with those picks too (Kopitar, Staal, Rask, Oshie, Neal in '05 or Karlsson, Eberle, Carlson, Josi in '08).

For the oft used "Builder" tag that gets used on Uncle Dale, like you said those were big misses and he hit on only one dman during his time here...albeit a good one (Hammer).

Comitted Indian has full Blackhawk draft list going back to 1991. Just looked it up now. Thanks for the correction.

No worries. Would have to look back, but I’m not sure Tallon drafted any Russians as a Hawk GM.

I know he signed Khabby.

Arguably two of the riches drafts in the history of the universal draft, and the Hawks Bob Pulford crapped the bed in 1979..

The NHL Draft's first years were not a free market, pick the best guys out there affair, because not until 1969 did the teams get to pick all prospects. 1966-68 had only unattached players available and Montreal got to keep almost the entire province of prospects and Toronto had a rich prospect pipeline that was "signed."

Every NHL team got a really good nhl player in 1979 except one who got Keith Brown and I love Keith but not considered a real good player..

I was help when Steve and Mark were doing the Blueline and selling it outside the new building, and I will never forget when the Hawks decided they were gonna sell Christian Laflamme on the radio outlet and to the reporters as a future all - star.

I tore them a new one on paper.

He Bill... unrelated question I've been meaning to ask.

Often in the draft there is a prospect that's expected to go high (i.e. top 10) but falls for various reasons. In the 2020 draft, do you think there could be any unexpected surprises for the Blackhawks at #17? Could somebody like Lundell or Quinn fall that far? Thanks.

It's funny how so much of this thread have cited bad players, and wow there have been a lot of them over the years. I guess it's not surprising that the players on both ends of the spectrum get the attention - either the notably good or the notable bad - and the players in the middle are mostly forgotten because ... well ... they aren't very noteworthy. And yet, it is those unheralded players that are needed to elevate a good team to a Cup contending team - those guys that don't have gaudy stats or all world skills but make a difference in the playoffs.

The challenge of constructing a lineup of favorite players who would make a playoff contending team is that our lineups are mostly devoid of those "glue/gritty" players but it is difficult to swap out a Roenick for a Marcus Kruger type player. Look at those type of players on the 3 Cup winning teams and none of them made any lineups in this thread - and yet weren't they crucial to the Hawks success?

I don't know the answer - just making an observation.

Not top 10, but I hope Justin Barron will fall to us in the 2nd round.

The great Teravainian was a guy who fell to us I think the explanation was size?

Tyler that's a all star lineup .. the amonte roenick kane line would be a terror to stop. A couple of honorable mentions or 1 person I would add would be Probert and Manson and as much as i like crawford my starting goalies would be belfour and Hasek . Belfour was a amazing goaltender whom imo was a lights out goalie and Hasek another HOF goalie .

I would even add Bernie Nichols as my third line center

I think there is a really strong top 18 and four defenders that are highly regarded in that they can get taken in the top 15 easily.

I don't understand the detractors that are lessening Lundell, but let's say he is a good player who can go in the pre-teens or be there at 17.
In August, he was FIVE on my list and that was after seeing the Swedes, Byfield and Lafreniere....

It was very clear that centre Hendrix Lapierre WAS a top ten player and then he had one concussion. then he had all these pains and dizzinesss and the doctors thought it was a second concussion and then post concussion syndrome but t wasn't another concussion, it was problems with vertebrates and surgery helped right it.

Remember Boqvist had THREE concussion and on teams backed off taking him early.
this kid comes with wear and I have no idea what the scouting and their doctors will make of him.

I think there are a lot of guys who can be picked defined by what the scouts saw.
Holloway he could go early, Quinn has upside, but I am not sure that he doesn't linger, but to 17 I am not sure.

Size again is a factor in many of these smaller guys...how much does it affect where Pefetti, Lucas Raymond, Marco Rossi, Seth Jarvis, and Brendan Brisson....get taken?

Every time one of these guys drop a slot means the team there has to re-evaluate their list, and somebody is dropping...

Tarasenko to Blues at #16 was still surprise...I thought he was top 3 with Taylor Tyler and said so over and over, but realized the Russian factor was a big part of the free fall.
I think that Teuvo Teravainen dropping was a surprise, same year Andrey Vasilevskiy lasting to set 19 Tampa, Karlsson for Ottawa at slot 15, was huge one, Dylan Larkin was bargain at 15, Travis Konercy at #24,and probably the biggest free fall win fall for the Bruins #88 Pastrnak at slot #25 (he should gone off at 20 or before...)

Also if we can all put our prejudices as Hawk fans that want beef in the draft, a guy you told me you liked a lot is worth a look as the hawk second rounder, Justin Sourdif
A centre who, by use of his advanced hands and feet, is able to lengthen offensive forays by his persistence and creative puck- handling. Is a natural strong athlete and works the attack zone with a combination of creative puck handling and power moves. Is a highly advanced skater and attacker who can fool the opposition using nifty edge work and shifts from outside to inside edging effortlessly bouncing off checks and make them look foolish with is stick handling ability. Already has developed weight room strength and is continuing to get stronger. Adapt as pressuring the oppositions puck carriers and will mirror their moves and get the biscuit back. Has a repertoire of puck handling moves he uses so he can vary what he does and the defensive players are expecting what they have seen earlier. His strength facilitates his high takeaway/turnover rate. Simply hasn’t raised his game to warrant any further rise in his ranking.
This is what I mean about the 2020 class, you simply can't overlook the upsides of so many players like him, who NHL teams might bump up their boards...this is a kid who could develop and really help a NHL club.

You're guy Saad falling to 43. He was supposed to be top 5 or 10 in that draft IIRC.

Yeah, Saad was in top 6 slots in October, but the groin injury was so extensive and he came backed and wasn't his entire 100% thus he dropped...
this is from a Penguin site in 2015:
"So, how did Brandon Saad, once again a sensation in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the Blackhawks, get away?

Simple: Ray Shero had the only vote that mattered.
This is the truth about the 2011 draft, as described by a man who sat at that table and remains with the organization today in pristine standing …

The Penguins’ scouts had made up their collective mind that their choice was Saad, the Gibsonia native, not at all because he was local but entirely because they were stunned he had fallen so far after being a consensus top-five pick, and there he was all the way down at their No. 23 position. They knew Saad’s plunge had much to do with a groin injury that season, but they also knew more about him than most teams, partly because of his proximity, partly because he’d just been invited to Consol Energy Center for a personal visit and tour a month earlier. They couldn’t believe their good fortune.but Ray Shero took Joe Morrow.

I would strongly consider that trade especially if the Hawks have a plan in place to replace Strome at 3C. I like the idea of trading for Jost from the Avs to fill that role.

In Bertuzzi, the Hawks would get a big power winger who could slot in nicely with Kane and Dach or with Toews and Kubalik depending on how DeBrincat and Saad are deployed.
