If people are diligent there's little reason to fear a large increase in cases. We've been wide open here all summer and aside from a dishonest doctor the only cases we've had are related to foreign workers and travel.

We're not a large city by any means but we're still the hub of the Atlantic.

Do I want to wear a mask? Not really. Do I? Mostly. I guess you could have some fun with the mask.

The upshot is that the regular flu numbers are down in countries currently going through flu season. That in itself is reason enough to wear one.

One major issue I expect us to have to deal with in the coming months is people sneaking tourists in to see the northern lights. There's a lot of small tourism companies here that like to break rules.

Border restrictions might become more lax, cold weather brings higher infection rates and lowered immune systems. We could stay clean but it seems highly unlikely especially as many are traveling outside the NWT to visit family elsewhere in Canada right now and we can't be sure everyone will follow the 2 week rule when they come home.
- NorthNuck

Ah. Makes sense.
That 2 week honour system rule is very canadian.

lol that's actually a good point. I did have a Tampa/EDM final in my pool but that didn't work out for the Oil. Might be 50% correct

Maybe I should have went Tampa/Van?

- LordHumungous

I had the Oil winning Laffy

Schools are the big issue.

If it gets in the system then even with measures in place young kids will bring it home.

- golfingsince

School is open here in NZ.
It's winter(ish).
I know it's different, but just saying.

I thought golfer was talking about things people can do to limit the transmission of the virus in the public and how this will impact on the NHL season next year...and you referred to the NHL bubbles having no cases, which is a weird comparison imo.
- dbot

Yes but earlier I suggested only 4 Canadian teams host bubbles for a regular season. All 7 could be bubbles & could add say Quebec City to bring it up to 8.

It's way different. We probably get more cases in a day than you've had total.
Edit: For most of Canada school has been out since March.

At the beginning of the Lockdown Bettman said players opting out this playoff series would have no action taken against them. He said next year is a different story. I don't think TB are going to want to pay Stamkos to not want to play or Boston with Rask.

Canada also refused to allow the Blue Jays access to have other baseball teams fly to Canada . I don't think they will allow the NHL.

- VANTEL

All good on next season opting in or out.

I suggested only Canadian hubs.

Every time I read or hear his name my IQ goes off the charts. I call it the Einstein syndrome. Once time passes it bottoms out as the Homer Simpson Syndrome. Then levels off to HB once again.

Carol pointed out something three months ago. NHL is wanting a new TV deal so they have to have some kind of season , otherwise NBC asks what hockey?

Right now all you can do is guess.

Yes I can only guess but I’m sure Bettman is already working on scenarios.

Yeah.
i try to keep up to date with news in BC, which has the same population as NZ and you're right.

School shut down here for about 5 weeks during the initial global lockdown, restarted and then shut down for 2 weeks recently due to a flair up.
The kids have gone back to school this week, despite their being some community transmission, but i think they're on top of things again.

We shall see.

They sort of already have Phase 1 proposal of next year but they are guessing as far as what the conditions are going to be.

A new 5yr CBA indicates much. Bet on everything is being considered given the time they have to work out various scenarios.

Another bad #COVID19 day in neighbouring Washington state: 304 new cases (a relatively low number) but, worse, 16 people died. Cases will cross the 75,000 mark tomorrow, and total deaths are nearing 2,000.

Better #COVID19 numbers in BC today: 58 new cases (we'd avgd. 104 last 4 days). 1 death. 31 in hospital (+3), 10 in ICU (no change). 2761 in isolation. 1124 deaths.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't see the Canadian Gov opening borders to allow sports .I hope they don't open the borders.

BC did well originally but I believe domestic travel has hurt them. We don't allow domestic travel except for within the Atlantic bubble without quarantine. When provinces are getting 200 cases in a single day then opening schools again is going to increase that significantly IMO.

Alternative then is only US hubs. Imo that’s a very poor consolation option.

Hub cities work as far as safety goes , but are very costly for the NHL . The alternative is to travel around but the MLB is cancelling games by the dozens as new cases hits their league.

to be fair you also thought the finishing the season was a bad idea too.
It's worked well.
But i take your point about travel/borders.

- dbot

Yes, I didn't think they could pull it off but they did, and did a good job of it but I think the playoff tournament thingy is completely different than a full season whether it is condensed or not. And it's not over yet. If teams are not staying stationary in one city and travelling back and forth to their home city from one hub city, it is quite different and the NHL loses control of the players movement. Players will be at home with their kids who have returned to school. Their spouse who have been to the grocery store, beer store and butcher. Look what has happened in Canada since restrictions have been relaxed, the numbers continue to climb. Anyway, I don't want teams coming to Canada from the US unless they quarantine for 14 days like everyone else has to.

Nothing would be more costly or damaging than cancelling the season.
