VAN may have to make a tough decision on Markstrom

They are being hit with almost 4 M of bonuses that they will have to choose to spread out over 2 years or put them all on next years cap. They will have Lous cap penalty on both years and Petterson and Hughes contracts being over in two years.

Their cap situation isn't great but its manageable.

Might be smart to let Markstrom go.

They will probably have no choice. This is his one chance to get paid.

Not shopping Freddy

This is incorrect. They will lose Demko or have to trade him in the next year due to the expansion draft. They are in a tough cap situation and really cannot afford to give Markstrom a big deal. He suddenly had a career year at age 31.

And yeah, you can argue he was their MVP, but the real superstars that carry that team are Pettersen and Hughes. Both need massive deals soon.

It's certainly a great question and seems to indicate that there's something fundamentally wrong with the Leafs d-corps and/or the "system" -- and less an issue with who is between the pipes.

Ergo, Andy would be much more solid with an actual team playing good defense around him.

However, I would still trade Andersen regardless of whether he's a problem or not. If Colorado can win games with Hutch in net that's even more reason to trade Andersen while he's worth something than to hold on to him.

I firmly believe the Leafs need to significantly upgrade the right-side of the d-corps and ensure that the "system" is more defensively responsible (I'm looking a you, forward group!).

I think you underestimate how much they value Lehtonen. They’ve got him for one year and unless he bombs out they’re going to use him. He played a full season on the right side. Whether he can play there at the NHL level is another question but he’s part of the equation.

They have to come to an agree,ent. It really doesn't make sense to pay Markstrom a big salary and risk losing Demko. They have much bigger worries like signing Pettersen and Hughes. They have considerable waste of cap on guys not playing and 4th liners.

Desperately needs a change of scenery. Toronto might not be the right place though as he could wilt even further under the lights of Hockey Mecca.
