IMO their current playoff success can be taken with a grain of salt, it was an extenuating set of circumstances that got a mediocre team into the second round and they’re a team with a poor makeup that relies so heavily on goaltending it’s ridiculous.
Again, imo, you’re not ready to compete when your O Zone possession is 1/3 of your opposition and you’re getting outshoot 50-25 almost every game.
The Canucks have a great young core but they have massive work to do in building a sustainable competitive contender. - Pacificgem
I think they take the proverbial step back next season before they really flourish. Expectations will be high next season (whenever that may happen) but they have to ride out the bad contracts while easing in the next wave of youngsters.
They are on their way to being a contender but I just don't think it's next season. |

As much poop as Benning gets, I think he built the idea of the team well with the vets incubating the young guys. Clearly overpaid on some players, which even he has said but you see how hard it's been for other young teams to break through (Oilers, Leafs, Canes, Avs) and how much turnover they've had in personnel year after year. Most young teams that make it far have their warts covered up by fantastic goaltending, like ours.
I just hope JB has enough balls to pump the brakes on the hype train. The media thinks this team is closer, the fans think this team is closer, FA thinks this team is closer... so that means taking one step back, letting a free agent or two walk (Marky or TT), and playing in to his strength of promoting from within. |

I think it will turn out like the Avs. They had that one season they crushed the regular season, then fell back down for three, before turning it around. I don't think ours will be as dramatic, but there will be a bit of a sag and needed turnover. |

I really do enjoy reading the comments on here and I respect most of them. I think it is really how you guys feel but I trust my own judgement first.
When Canucks finished in 3 from the bottom my prediction was they would finish 6 th the following year. They did.
The next year I predicted they would finish 10 th from the bottom they finished 9 th.
I predicted this year like most they would be a bubble team but would make the playoffs. They did.
I predicted the McCann Gudbradson trade months before it happened and nailed it.
I predicted the Sutter for Bonino trade months before and nailed it.
I predicted the Beagle Roussel signing
And last year before Trade Deadline I predicted they would sign Myers and make two trades and one of them would be a top 6 forward for our first round pick. I never predicted Toffoli name but he was the second trade.
No matter what people think of the moves I still got the guessing correct. This is why I trust what I think.
Next year top 10 is my prediction Roussel and Jake will be gone and so will our 2021 first round pick but Benning gets a 2020 first round pick back. |

Just look at the Hawks depth in 2010, they drafted Crawford, Byfuglien, Burrish, Bickell, Brouwer, Bolland, Seabrook and Keith...all of them were on their first Cup team except Crawford. That’s three great dmen and three great bottom six forwards. Bolland was fifth in their playoff scoring in 2010. We don’t have those guys. |

I totally agree and understand the older guys to insulate their youth, but he way over did it, now he’s gotta wiggle his way out of it. |

Just my opinion, but, the Canucks won’t be truly competitive until Pettersson and Quinn Hughes are around 25 years of age and they get a new General Manager.
They’ll be entertaining enough, but not competitive until they’re able to play a different style of game with way better depth. |

It was Green who asked Benning to get Schaller Roussel and Beagle two years ago . On paper they fit the needs to a tee of what the team needed. Schaller the year before he came here had 12 goals as a bottom line guy. Rous had a reputation of being a pest.
I think this year Benning will make his own changes .

The problem is, you can only make so many changes every year in the current NHL climate, it’s just so hard to make moves now. Which is one of the reasons I think it’ll take three years to be competitive if they make the right moves.
Benning has a pretty sketchy trading track record, yes he’s got a few wins but way more loses than wins. I still maintain he’s not a well respected GM when it comes to trading, just a gut feeling I have. |

He sucked when he first started. Whether it was NTC, NMC, bad decisions , brain farts , Ownership who know but he has gotten a lot better in his last two years.

Agreed. The Avs had that great season that exceeded everyone's expectations and then fell off a cliff. I think this version of the Canucks are better suited not to fall as far. As long as they (management) don't rush things. Let a couple of players fufill their contracts and bring in the young guys from the farm when they are ready. Goaltending is the big conundrum right now.
Loui can mentor from the press box.
Hopefully someone (Arizona) wants Sven. |

I think there's two things at play: 1) Chicago drafted later to earlier (meaning they got the depth guys before the top end guys) so they came into the league around the same time (since depth guys take longer to develop), and 2) Benning couldn't foresee how great and impactful Petey and Hughes would be off the bat.
If you look at the other guys who were drafted around them, they're not making the same impact at such a young age, save a couple. But to have two back to back really sped things up for JB, which he probably wasn't anticipating when signing those vets. Is what it is now and he's created this situation – and he has to work his way out of that – but if Petey and Hughes were even a year or two behind in their progression, I think his plan would have worked out more smoothly. |

Maybe they will get someone similar to those guys with their 3rd round pick this year. |

You have to add Boeser too . He was a finalist for the Calder and had very productive years. Was the All Star MVP |

Baertschi passed thru waivers twice, every other team could’ve had him for free, unless you pay someone to take him, which would be stupid, he ain’t going anywhere. |

If Gillis was able to draft better we wouldn’t be waiting, but if my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle.
Why I think they’re three years away is exactly the reasons you stated, Benning’s drafting has been excellent, however, those guys need time to develop. |

I think if you asked anyone if they would take three years to contend for the cup they would be happy.
I think top 10 next year top 5 the year after .We are not talkin a lot of difference.

In three years Benning will have been at the helm for almost a decade. Hopefully he’s gone by then. |
