If they trade 8th for Monahan they will be repeating their lack of patience and in the building of the team all over again. The speed up build for Jack or whoever. If they want him for 3 years then use something else as the focus of the trade. They are taking 6+ million off the Flames books, they shouldn't get an 8th overall in a strong draft for only a 3 year signed player who is suspect on the D coming off a down year.

Would you agree he's in the top half of your list?

I think he is, and that's why I make the deal. Sure, I'm shaving some off the ceiling, but I'm eliminating the floor

If you want to roll the dice and play "stud or dud," that's fine. Ill take the guaranteed useful player

They could bring on via trade or UFA signing 2 of Henrique, Copp, Soderberg, Stastny without giving up the 8th overall this year.

Getting 2 of the above would make a massive difference next year.

It doesn't have to be Monahan, as you can get two Centers added to the team to make a giant difference in team performance next year while still being able to keep the 8th overall.

- kingcong39

That's true, too.

I'm all for whatever, but they've got to make this team a playoff contender.

A bit, but your logic has nothing to do with Monahan at this point, it's against the 8 pick.

This Monahan drooling over for the 8th pick reminds me of the ROR trade talk a bit. People wanting to deal the 8th just for the excitement of a big trade but in practicality, it's really not that smart.

No talk of Cozens but there is with the 8th and not just with the Flames. Tampa is going to be tight with cash, the 8th and a Dman may go a long way, for example. We have players and a pick that other teams may want.

No one should want to trade the pick, but everyone should want some established NHL top 6 talent. Wing or center. If it takes the 8th pick so be it.

I’m pretty sure we’d all choose the Montour + or Risto route rather then the pick

Personally, I don't care who it is.

If dealing the 8OA pick makes us significantly better, then I can live with it.

Some on here are acting like we'd be passing up picking a sure fire HOFer, when in reality it's probably less than 50% said draft pick makes that big an impact.

The entire reason they would rush or think too much is due to fear of injury due to you hitting them, so ultimately, it is the intent to hurt them that makes them scared to make a good play.

Amending the rule to only allow a player to be hit when he has the puck, and no more point whatever second allowance would be an interesting change.

- kingcong39

You don't hit to injure people, atleast most players don't, being physical and taking hits is a part of hockey, it is a part of wearing down players and hoping it does enough for them to make a mistake, especially a Dman cause that can cause more offensive opportunities.

It’s definitely less than 50% that the pick is better than Monahan.

Different organizations have different timelines and goals. Ottawa can wait a year or two for their picks to make an impact. The Sabres need to do something now. Im not saying trading 8 is the only way out, but im doing it 100 times out of 100 for the right player.

If they can go get Domi and Strome or whatever for Montour, Mittlestadt a 2nd, sweet. But I wouldn't hesitate to trade 8 either

I’ve taken the time to watch all of Monahan’s goals from the past two seasons.

I think he makes our PP a top 3-5 unit in the league from what he can do in the slot.

However, at even strength he really has no net impact and really depended on Gaudreau’s play making ability.

It would be imperative to keep Larry around as a 3C and take all the defensive zone faceoffs or find someone else in that ilk that can handle it.

Monahan was a -16 this year on a playoff team and had heavy offensive usage.

Tough sell for me tbh.

What does Montreal want for Danault, that’s the best fit for us. I doubt it would cost 8th OA for a one year rental.

Why are trying to do a quick fix ? We have wasted countless draft picks and look what it's done to us and now everyone wants the continue doing that..

We need to start building a contender Not a team that's just good enough

Well if you know so much about what is going on with the organization, then obviously you don't think Jack will leave and wait until we are a contender.
