We're missing later round picks. We have our 1sts and 2nds. I don't think the draft pick shortage point works. That's all. No argument otherwise.
- RhinoFan

I think the draft pick shortage point definitely works in terms of it being bad asset management and bad player evaluation, when they are trading away picks for players that are mostly duds.

https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/sabres

There's no reason for them to not recoup picks at the past 2 draft deadlines for some of their pending UFA's.

Larsson for example, who has been long known for wanting out of Buffalo, did not get dealt. Instead, JB traded picks for Simmonds and Frolik.

Additional picks are extra lottery tickets that could end up resulting in an Olofsson return years down the line.

They help keep your prospect pool stocked year to year.

What would be nice is if they could get a mid first for Risto and then package the mid first with something for Monahan.
- sbroads24

Agreed - that's a homerun scenario.

2 3rds. JB was really bad at deadline moves. All these things add up.
- Lunaion

He showed a consistent trend of attempting to overplay his hand.

Unlike Darcy, it did not work out for him.

He's just focused on finding a team and the Leafs, who are in on everybody, might be a good fit as a playoff team needing some sandpaper. Simmonds, who i love in a fourth line role for Buffalo, will be lucky to get $1-1.5M on a one yr. deal this season.

Remember in happy gilmore when he says "I'm the only guy who's ever taken off his skate to try to stab somebody"

"The Buffalo Sabres have traded two 3rd round picks (separately) for Jimmy Vesey" feels somewhat similar

He should just retire you fully recovered and have a good amount of money and had a great career of 900 + games

Believe it or not, some guys have ultimate individual goals. He’s at 499 points. Don’t you think he’d like to get to 500? And he’s 91 games from 1000 games played. Two seasons and he can hit that goal too. If he goes to a playoff ready team he can chase a cup from the fourth line.

This team needs decent talent, but also players with heart, that have a little grit, do whatever it takes to win puck battles, make a defensemen pay while retrieving a puck. When I played hockey was taught you might not always win that race into the corner or behind the net for the puck, but that defensemen was gonna pay for being there. We don't have enough guys who will finish there checks. It's not always about talent, HEART goes a long way too.

'Finishing your check' means you didn't get there in time to make an actual play on the puck.

The ultimate goal of 'finishing your check' is to injure the opposing player, whether a little or a lot, to get them to he scared to play.

I hate it, personally of course.

- kingcong39

Disagree.
I love it since it is a mindset that all can buy into...be hard to 0lay against. Make opponents look over their shoulder, feel the pressure, react too quickly, cause turnovers or bad plays. Knock them off their game. Nothing to do with causing an injury, none. Cause a bit of short-term pain..even better, yes. Injury, no.
It is a mindset, Eichel who is fast enough can employ these traits as well and lead by example...if he does it, others buy in.

😂😂😂😂. Omg. Get off your high horse with this 8th overall draft pick.

Again, you can say that about sooooo many other sabres draft picks we have had

How many panned out??

This draft isn’t considered “deep” as previous drafts.

It’s basically Lafreniere then a steep fall / a full on crap shoot
where each player gets picked.

2021 conditional 5th round pick* (BUF)
*Conditions: If Simmonds plays in 10 regular-season games this season, and Buffalo qualifies for the 2020 playoffs, the selection upgrades to a 2021 4th round pick.

Result: Condition not met. New Jersey receives the 2021 5th round pick.

Short term pain is an injury, it just doesn't last as long as the obvious injuries.

Was Mark Recchi being hard to play against on the Hurricanes when he was borderline useless, that is until he arm checked Tallinder, because he was too slow to catch his body fully, knocking Tallinder out of the playoffs?

Hitting a player without the puck has no other intent than to either temporarily or permanently injuring that player in order to make that player scared to make plays they normally would make.

Just my opinion and I know I am way in the minority with that.

Check or hit a man who actually has the puck, to separate him from the puck? Absolutely, 100%. Hitting a man without the puck because you were too slow to get there or you had bad timing? Nope, no thank you.

They could bring on via trade or UFA signing 2 of Henrique, Copp, Soderberg, Stastny without giving up the 8th overall this year.

Getting 2 of the above would make a massive difference next year.

It doesn't have to be Monahan, as you can get two Centers added to the team to make a giant difference in team performance next year while still being able to keep the 8th overall.

- kingcong39

Great post!
It shouldn't be viewed as either /or, when factually it should be viewed as how do the get both...an upgrade at C and retain 8-OA

I’ve taken the time to watch all of Monahan’s goals from the past two seasons.

I think he makes our PP a top 3-5 unit in the league from what he can do in the slot.

However, at even strength he really has no net impact and really depended on Gaudreau’s play making ability.

It would be imperative to keep Larry around as a 3C and take all the defensive zone faceoffs or find someone else in that ilk that can handle it.

Monahan was a -16 this year on a playoff team and had heavy offensive usage.

Tough sell for me tbh.

What does Montreal want for Danault, that’s the best fit for us. I doubt it would cost 8th OA for a one year rental.

- Pegullaville

Good post.
Line 2 with Monohan and Skinner should not be viewed as a defensively capable Line...and doesn't need to be either.

I like the Larry for L3 comment, as I have been thinking the same ... Mojo, Larry, Cozens could be solid

I don't understand why people want to continue to punt seasons away.

If the forward adds involve Paul Statsny and Erik Halua then they need to add a borderline elite winger or it's just not good enough.

I'm fully with Jcrag at this point. Stop kicking the can down the road

I suppose it depends on the goal
Trade for ______ & (hopefully) make the playoffs,
or keep pick8 who could likely(?) become a “core” member that could help us get to the point where we are a legit contender for the Cup

At this point the goal should be icing the best possible lineup for 2020-21

It’s Eichel’s 6th season
Dahlin’s 3rd

Enough thinking about 2-3 years from now
