G and V don't need to carry the team at this point. They just need to mentor the kids and contribute reasonably. When they're contacts are up decisions can be made.

JVR needs to be a consistent producer or a buyout is in order if no one wants him.

The plan was and should still be to keep drafting well and then add components when it's clear that the team is very close. We're not quite there yet as we saw in the playoffs. I have full faith that hextall would have spent some picks/young players, signed UFAs etc when he felt the team was on the cusp. It's the blueprint they used when he was the A/GM in LA. He had a plan, but Scott was not patient and needed results faster. I'm just glad Fletch has generally stayed the course and not gone hog wild spending picks when the team isn't ready to contend.

Except he did, you orget he inherited a massive cap issue when he took over. When he finally was able to clear that up he made a move to help the team take the next step adding JVR to help scoring and fill a gap at LW. It might not have been the correct move but to say he didnt do anything is absurd.

well we disagree. So he did next to nothing, is that better?

Hextall was let go prematurely. He never really got to add the fit and finish to his product. JvR was the first step, and sure it hasn’t worked out well, but it was just the beginning. JvR was the most valuable FA of that god awful off season, as well.

Hextall’s time to make the finishing touches would have been this last year, this year, and next.

He took the worst farm ranked in the NHL and turned them into a top 5 rather quickly where they stayed until his departure.

Hextall did have to revamp the whole prospect pool. They had pretty close to nothing in the cupboard. That cannot be fixed in a season or two. He was not perfect but he set the Flyers up to win for the next half decade.

again he neglected the nhl team. He drafted well and the jury is still out on many.

Look 3 years after each draft as that should give you a good idea of how it will pan out. not exact science mind you.

It is when an entire culture needs to change. One that stops adding band-aids just to remain relevant once in awhile, while paying exorbitant salaries to mediocre players and having to settle for 4th line goons in response. The West hasn’t been using goons on the 4th line for over a decade at that point, and those who were picked guys who could actually skate and contribute in other factors.

The Flyers were an old machine in need of a tuneup from the top down.

I don't think he neglected the NHL team. He did not do enough to improve it. But what assets was he supposed to use to improve the team. The zero prospects to trade or the zero cap space?

They improved from one year to another with the young players he drafted playing a major role. They did not win the cup and that is the ultimate goal. However, they did show vast improvement.

Bill are there any European players they flyers may have an interest in at all? Be it former NHL guys or guys who have always played in Europe. Any potential diamonds in the rough there?

They signed the one they were targeting; Linus Sandin. European regular seasons are already underway in some countries or are in preseason with regular season to begin shortly. The IIHF Worlds for 2020 were already canceled months ago.

it was neglect to me when you look at the slop he always added. His approach was no great plan. He did it half ass by keeping to keep clode and jake. Didnt have the balls to move them and do a proper "rebuild". Had a good core handed to him and wasted that. Schenn deal only one where he may have got a good return. Still dont think either one will be as good as schenn when all is said and done.

His drafting grade would be an A. His biggest mistake was not fixing the coaching situation sooner and getting rid of hakstol

Weiss wasn’t given a ton, Jake was due for a raise, and was an elite player at that time.

JvR I agree with. That was really his first move to try and put on the finishing touches, but he clearly wasn’t done. It was step 1.

I actually agree. Different sport but Mark Jackson still can't get a job and I heard similar complaints.

Also, what does it say that we really took off after Hextall left? Was it the natural progression of a team? Or no longer under the thumb of that jerk?

Next to nothing? How do you believe that bullsh*t?

Let me ask you who from Hextall's team is on the Flyers now that finished 2nd in their division and if the stoppage never happened, had a shot at 1st in the division?

Giroux
Voracek
Couturier
Konecny
Lindblom
Patrick
Laughton
Raffl
JVR
Farabee
NAK
Provorov
Myers
Sanheim
Hagg
Ghost
Hart
Elliot

So what exactly did Fletcher do besides adding Braun, Niskanen and Hayes and promote prospects when they were ready?

He definitely could have blown it up. Personally, if he had chosen that route I would have been fine with it. But there is zero data that guarantees they would be much better than they are right now if he had.

players like weiss should never ever be given 4 year deals for 2.5 or whatever it was, good lord. it was a horrible signing.

they were in a "rebuild" why sign jake when you have a draft and develop plan that is years away?
