Agreed. Was too loyal to the coaching decision. Shoulda pulled that plug more quickly.
- Hesh_

Coaching change didnt solve anything though. Forget who it was that replaced him but he didnt do much better. The improvement in play was minimal at best.

players like weiss should never ever be given 4 year deals for 2.5 or whatever it was, good lord. it was a horrible signing.

they were in a "rebuild" why sign jake when you have a draft and develop plan that is years away?

So if a point per game player is available on the open market this offseason you don't want the Flyers to sign him?

You resign your best players. Of course they could have traded him or let him walk as an FA. I have no problem with signing Jake there. The plan was to get good at some point. Jake was part of that plan.

I was just referring to our regular season with our depth. Our scoring depth (and regular scoring) certainly didn’t show up in the isles series. Unless I’m just making a mistake, I don’t remember that line being a regular season one (it’s been a while)
- arichardson22

We had to trade for Grant and Thompson due to lack of depth. We had to sign Hayes because Patrick was unlikely to play. We had to maybe rush Frost and Farabee because they might not ready but we needed someone to play. I don’t like our depth to be honest.

He definitely could have blown it up. Personally, if he had chosen that route I would have been fine with it. But there is zero data that guarantees they would be much better than they are right now if he had.
- mickel25

forget the data. Do it properly; whether it worked or not stripping it down was what should have been done if you wanted to rebuild.

I also would have had no issue with it. Same as i have no issue on who named as coach. He went outside the box instead of a retread. I liked it despite the end results. Though knowing some of what we know did haxstol have a lot of say or did hextall make coaching decisions?

Hextall may have been a micromanager, and maybe even thought of as a tyrant. Far be it from me to argue with that.

But they guy had a vision, it started with the farm, and he was excellent from that perspective.

With all of the recycled garbage that has come and gone in the GM position in this league, you’d think somebody would give a second chance to a guy who basically built two strong farms. Lombardi himself gave a ton of credit to Ron for those Cup winners, and looking at who we have in the system, I can’t help but think he did another fine job, even if they never come away with a Cup. He certainly put it in motion. He wasn’t given a chance to finish it.

The man should be given another shot. A second chance isn’t too much to ask for with his resume. Who’s to say he hasn’t learned from his mistakes?

If I was a team in rebuild, I’d want that guy in a position to make my draft picks for the next 4-5 years minimum.

you look at Tampa and the effect Hedman has on the group, poise and mature with skill. It was really noticeable last night. I watched Provy be more patient with the puck this year then he was last year. I think Provy continues to get better, it will be smaller steps forward but he will closer to a Hedman than further. I am not saying he will be Hedman so let go of the keyboard. Overall the D will get better. I agree let Braun go unless Hagg is not in the picture.

Imagine if Patrick did play this season and just did what he did in his last full season. That is an upgrade over Thompson and Grant, that makes the Flyers a better team. I don't think you will upgrade by trading Jake and trying to replace him. the Flyers need to get speed out there for G, Jake and Coots. Johnny hockey is not what I call fast but he is a real good skater and can score, he at the right price is interesting. I like Pitlick and Raffle. I like NAK, I think if he plays with players not named Thompson and Grant he adds to the 4th line. I also think they have plenty of other options. The Flyers have some interesting players coming up. With the way Hex loaded the system and Fletcher continued I think the Flyers are in a spot to make a NEED trade or they could stay the course. They still have 7 picks this season. I hate to add a pick to ditch JVR but this is the year if any to do it. I honestly think JVR will have a good season next season. While I think the Flyers need that big body in front with hands, it is easier to replace that skill set than to find a fast player with some skill.
XMAS list? 1 vet D that can play 2 unit minutes and 1-2 fast skaters to play middle 6

Next to nothing? How do you believe that bullsh*t?

Let me ask you who from Hextall's team is on the Flyers now that finished 2nd in their division and if the stoppage never happened, had a shot at 1st in the division?

Giroux
Voracek
Couturier
Konecny
Lindblom
Patrick
Laughton
Raffl
JVR
Farabee
NAK
Provorov
Myers
Sanheim
Hagg
Ghost
Hart
Elliot

So what exactly did Fletcher do besides adding Braun, Niskanen and Hayes and promote prospects when they were ready?

comparing signing jake when they did compared to where the team is now is apples and oranges.

I agree. My point is he was a PPG player at the time. I am fine with him being resigned to a significant deal.

that to me was not needed as we now see he wasted away here. He will be on the backside of his prime when all these alleged young studs are ready and they will be saddled with a bad contract

Exactly you got nothing. It is fine if you dont like him but your bias towards him is clear as water. GMs are human. Humans are not perfect. All GMs make moves that dont always pan out. Hextall did good things with the team. His behaviour behind the scenes, his insubordination and perhaps a little of his over-protectiveness of some of the prospects are why he was fired.

you mean ron hextall didnt come up with the draft and develop model?

Hextall never wanted to expedite that process. He was stubborn. How cant you see that. Never provided his young d with help they needed. It was we will be good when i say we will be good mantra. At some point every process/plan needs to reevaluated and adjusted.

I don't think he was stubborn as much as he didn't believe in the group at the time.

I don't understand how you can sit there with a straight face nitpicking peoples opinions when you suggested trading voracek for parise. relax a bit.

With exception to Giroux Hextall chose to re-sign these guys and not trade them so still counts for him. He could have moved Voracek, Raffl, Laughton, Hagg and Ghost easily and chose not too. He at least signed most of these guys to deals.

I actually agree. Different sport but Mark Jackson still can't get a job and I heard similar complaints.

Also, what does it say that we really took off after Hextall left? Was it the natural progression of a team? Or no longer under the thumb of that jerk?

just a simple yes or no question. Where all those players highlighted here before hextall was named the GM? Yes or no.
