All edmundson cost was a 5th rounder?!?! Fack what a deal for the habs. |

I said the same thing days ago when I pointed out that LE + JV for a 2nd round pick is a horrible trade for the Canucks. Many were just fine with it.
IMO, JB has to turn guys like JV into serviceable players because there’s no one in the prospect pool right now that could fill his shoes regardless of how disappointing his play has been so far. If this team is going to be top 10 then every position on the roster has to get better whether through personal growth or replacement. No regression allowed. - bloatedmosquito
It could be JV & LE for Connor McDavid and the fans would still cry. Welcome to Vancouver. |

I do believe Jim Benning has turned the corner from his foolish ways in his early years in Vancouver as a first time General Manager, however, I will be carefully observing how he handles this summer.
With his past digressions staring at him squarely in the face, he’s going to have a very difficult time making the team any better than the bubble wildcard team, that heavily relies on all-star goaltending, they were before the stoppage. |

I do agree they had very good goal tending . When Markstrom went down Demko stepped in . I wonder if Markstrom's new team will include Ian Clark? |

Edmundson deal was for a RFA that Carolina could not re-sign.
This may be the market for what we could get for Stecher. I'd take the 5th round pick than let stecher go to Arb |

I don’t think Markstrom’s an idiot, he’s not going to suddenly just forget everything that Clark taught him. I read this morning a quote from Clark how Markstrom was a terrible puck tracker, he would guess on how the play was going to develop and then try and find the puck, he doesn’t do that anymore, and I don’t see him forgetting any time soon. |

Apologies for falling off the radar over the last few days.
I flew back to Edmonton on Friday, so I've been playing catch-up.
It's too bad that I didn't make it back before the Canucks were eliminated, but Friday's Islanders-Lightning game was a highly entertaining barnburner. Looking forward to Game 4 of Dallas/Vegas tonight.
Here's the new blog, with some thoughts on Horvat, Tanev, the bubble, Toffoli, and league-wide salary-cap pressures...

He’s a UFA.

I stand corrected. I guess Montreal really see something in him and want to make sure he ends up there. Guess it doesn't compare to stechers scenario |

No, the Panthers play a completely different style of game than Columbus. If Markstrom goes to a team that’s a lot better defensively than the Canucks it could prolong his career and help him avoid injury instead of having to make ten 5-alarm saves every game. |

Could resign all the players that actually have value, keep money back to pay Peterson and Hughes their 10m next year and actually compete indeed of trying to be creative to fit everything under the cap. Don't care what anyone says, this team is weaker next season due to these horrible, vastly overpaid, 4th line players. - Pres.cup
Petey and Hughes are not getting $10M dollars on their next deals...this ain't TO. I will give you that they have to be careful with Petey as he can accept an offer sheet but Hughes is in the same position as Brock (no arb or offer sheet rights).
I expect 3 year deals in the $7 - $8MM dollar range. Aho (5 years) and Rantenan (6 years) comparable deals plus COVID factored in. |

As Vantel mentioned earlier, they did well in the playoffs so you can’t argue with the results. Personally I think it had more to do with the tremendous goaltending than anything else but it’s still a team game.
But the one facet most of use can judge is the management of the team. Critiquing signings and trades is fair game IMO. Most here can accurately pick out obviously bad management moves without the need of a crystal ball. LE is a prime example. When that signing happened most if not all of us were like WTF? - bloatedmosquito
Ya LE was and is a brutal signing but there are other factors in play that people fail to acknowledge. The team needed to justify ticket prices by spending to the Cap and the Sedins (the top players at the time) needed a linemate...end of the day, huge fail all around.
Benning seems to be learning from past mistakes. People don't like him spending to acquire "character" but if the core sticks around and excels, then it's money well spent to insulate the core in the early years.
Petey and Hughes will not be getting the huge payday on their next deals people are assuming. They are under team control and I think both parties will look for a short term deal...get through COVID uncertainty with the team retaining control. |
