exactly how I understand it to work. no point in using LTIR if you are not near the cap ceiling. it doesn't help the team out
if the contract is insured, it mostly 80/20 split between the insurance company and the team.

- dmnted

so the benefits the leafs will have is paying that 20% if they trade for these LTIR contracts. Makes sense since Arizona can't afford to pay 1+mil for Hossa not to play. Who else is out there other than Hossa?

Kesler, Zetterberg, Hossa, Gaborik, Seabrook/Shaw/Little (possibly)

Not as many options as people think there is

Yes, but having a guy like Hossa or Horton doesn’t help regardless. There’s no loophole that I see.

I understood we traded for those guys last year ( their caps count during the off-season ) so we were at max cap and THEN we could go over by 10% allowing us to sign Marner.

- Garnie

Hossa or Horton on the LTIR allows the team to reuse that money

Apparently you can use the LTIR in summer.
Thanks to Lou for that. I think the Leafs used it when Lou was GM

I think you are right, it allowed them to sign Marner, and then we could put those guys on LTIR at the start of the season.. I don't see how it would work this year, unless they are going to give Dermott a huge payday, maybe?

I would take a chance on Little.. I recall him saying he wants to get back to playing. Might be worth the chance..

Say Johnsson and Dermott for Little and Pionk?

The problem with Little is that if he does come back, you're paying 5.3mil for a 3rd line center. That is why they traded Kadri because they couldn't do that.

Yeah, right now he does have 4 years left on his deal, but the Leafs can make it work if he does come back.. I assume, he'll be out for at least another full season. Also, his salary drops in later years of the deal, so they could trade him

Maybe the Leafs need to look at their scouting situation. They have not been Able to develop their own goalie prospect or their own defensive prospects. They have looked elsewhere for both goalie and defence, maybe it is time to shift focus or scouting staff.
- oldhockeyfan

I liked this post because I have also considered this. On goalies specifically - I will check on D-Men later. I think if a team wants to draft a really good goalie, they have to be willing to pick early. In the history of the NHL draft - going back to 1968. The Leafs have picked a goalie twice in the first round. 2005 - Tuukka Rask (#21) - a good pick and 1994 Eric Fichaud (#16) Not so good. They have picked a goalie in the 2nd round twice as well.1990 Felix Potvin (#31) a very good pick and 1994 Francois Larivee (#50) not so good.

The problem is not the scouting on the goalies is my conclusion, it is the willingness to use a high draft pick to get a goalie. 50% of goalies drafted in the first two rounds by Leafs were good picks. Expecting to get a good goalie in rounds 3-7 is wishful thinking IMO.

Yes I get that, think about this.

If we spend 81m on our players and get Hossa, we still don’t have anymore room to spend money as we spent our 81m already and put Hossa on LTIR.

I think we only needed it to get to cap max, we won’t need it this year as we are at cap max.

But you wouldn't take the Hossa contract without getting the player you wanted. Hossa goes on LTIR and the player you wanted fills his roster spot.

This is the loophole i see. I may be wrong.

Wouldn't it work in the Leafs favour, if they move out salary first (ie; trade Johnsson, Kerfoot, Andersen. Then trade for Hossa and sign Pietrangelo, put Hossa on LTIR)

I could see something centred around Keumper/Hossa contract for the Leafs potentially.

Hossa is already signed It doesnt matter what order really I dont think. You can put Hossa on LTIR when you acquire him if you go over the cap.

That could work.
Johnsson and a 3rd rd pick for Kuemper and Hossa.

Thats awful value for Andersen and his contract. Ekblad really isnt that good, and not worth this contract and you want to offer a first and Sandin?

Id trade for him, but im not including Sandin and a first.

- Archaic

I don't see Andersen getting more than a second. Too many goalies out there but he'll have better value than majority.

Bahaha.
I so expected this response from you.
"Best money can buy?" How do you know they are the best?
Was there an article or something?

- Fakepartofme

Well they are spending the most. And how has their drafting been bad?

Umm thats a big difference from "the best money can buy"
Good or bad? That was never the question. I just asked how you knew they were the best money could buy.
Too early to tell either from the past couple of drafts.
Didnt have a 1st last year. They seem to have finally hit on a non 1st rounder as Robertson looks promising.
Sandin looks good - high hopes for him
Sda has potential
Still need time for others.

Time will tell.
1m in actual money could be a factor but there does seem to be a lot of tenders available.

please no MAF.
he is not very good.

EDIT: I'd rather keep Andersen than going with MAF.
