The only logical reason I can think of for holding on to Risto as long as we’ve had is because of a play like this.
Perhaps if we have a good team and reduce him to sheltered role at even strength and allow him to run PP2 he would finally benefit the team rather then be a detriment.

He has immense physical talent, and very little hockey sense.

I did like Risto in front of the net on the pp. that was fun to watch. He’s just a bit of a beast in that position.
All the coaches seem to love him and over play him. I think he’d be great with less minutes. Long term, he just doesn’t make sense with our depth on defense. Joker should be the 2RD and that’s where Risto would excel. There just isn’t any balance in the d ranks right now.
I guess we will see what the power trio comes up with.

That’s one I agree with and a reason I move him now, along with the pending contract and depth we have on defense. Now is the time to move on. But from what we hear, Ralph loves him and he ain’t going anywhere. Seems short sighted from a team building standpoint... on the right side, I’m getting hjlmarsson out of Az, trading Risto and Monte. Borgen is my first call up. And I’m finding a 2LD.
Dahlin. Hjlmarsson
Find one. Joker
McCabe. Miller (Borgen)
Resign one of the vet guys as the 7th
Borgen first call up.
If you want to move miller out and slide Borgen in as a “lean” move, I’m fine with that too.

Dahlin - DeMelo
McCabe - Jokiharju
Merrill - Miller

He’s really an overpaid #5 d-man.
His best asset his ability to QB a Power Play however with Dahlin in that role now he’s not getting those minutes. (Just like Tyson Barrie for the most part).

It’s just interesting that all the coaches love him. They see the physical and avoid the analytical. Nows the time to move on, rebrand the team a bit, as crazy as it sounds, it’s a lot like the billy g explanation for moving Staal. Sometimes, ya gotta shake it up, hopefully we’d do a little better than a mojo for risto. I’d hope for a 2rw or 3c, even if we had to add a little... but I highly doubt he’s moved. We will have to live with the good and bad Risto, they jumbled lineup, and one year closer to him needing a contract extension.

The time to move Risto was for Ehlers last offseason.
That still boggles my mind.
Maybe they can rekindle that talk this offseason but with the year Ehlers just had I’d have to think we would have to add a ++ to Risto now.
The guy has wanted out for two years now too and has voiced that even in the media. When his contact is up in 2 years he’s a goner regardless.

Few things could be further from the truth. He was a participant on the PP and nothing more. When you see Dahlin back there you can see someone with offensive freativity.

Well if they don't trade him, he works perfectly in front of the net.

Thank you.
Said that last July during FA.
Those who want to use him as 3rd Pairing aren't properly considering his $5.4 Cap hit and Bonus/Salary.
He's overpaid for a 2nd Pairing IMO

Risto had 4 straight 40 points seasons before recording 33 this past season.
His power play points in those respective seasons were 21, 25, 23, and 17 respectively.
Dahlin and Quinn Hughes look like they are going to be the best QB of the PP in the entire NHL for the next decade.
Dahlin being elite at that role doesn’t mean that Risto is not a very good top man on the PP either. It managed to earn him $5.4M a year

Talk to VGK in a Risto for Tuch and to CBJ in a Montour for Anderson move(s).
I'd say Tuch played himself out if trade talk, but you never know.
If they pulled that off, I'd move Sam to not be in the hook for a costly deal.

Can't disagree. He hasn't had much around him though and a losing environment. My fear is, if we trade him, he'll turn into a great dman wherever he goes. He made strides last year after a brutal 2018

Ristolainen, 8th overall, + for Ehlers and the 10th overall?
