I think they'll re-sign Elliott or go one year on another vet. While they are comfortable with Lyon as the Phantoms starter and No. 3 on the depth chart, I've never gotten the sense they are comfortable with him as the No. 2 option.

I'd love to be wrong. Alex is a great guy, a good goalie and one of the best interviews anywhere: funny, insightful and never given to cliches.

Well he has made a nice living being in the AHL that is for sure. Still young where he will get paid hundreds of thousands. Not bad work. Seems like a guy they keep around after his playing days.

would they resign Elliot for 2 years or will lyon meet the expansion draft criteria?

Lyon is a UFA now. If they sign Elliott or any other backup, Lyon walks IMO. At 27 his best shot at a backup job is now. I don’t think he resigns with the Flyers to continue as #3

So is it the same expansion rules at Vegas? Well, they are NOT exposing Hart! That would mean whoever they sign would be at least a 2 year contract, right?

I’m not sure about a two-year Elliott deal. I would love for Lyon to have a chance. Whoever it is will be exposed in the Seattle expansion.

Same expansion rules. The goalie rule, as I understand it, is that goalie that gets exposed to the draft must be under contract for 2021-22 or an RFA who has been tendered a qualifying offer. Since Felix Sandstrom technically burned his first ELC season of it while on loan to HV71 in 2018-19 and will be an RFA after the 2020-21 season, I believe that tendering him a qualifying offer would make him Expansion Draft eligible. I will double-check on this to be sure, though.

It depends. He was on a one-way contract this past season, so he got $700,000 to mostly play in the AHL, which is a great salary for that league. If some NHL team offers him a two-way contract with a vague promise at an opportunity to compete for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, the wider financial move is to take another one-way if that's in the offing, even if it means being No. 3.

That’s an important consideration especially since it looks like a buyer’s market.

I’ve got to look again but it looked like there would be many goalies looking for a home this offseason.

I don't know about that. There are a lot of available goalies and no team is likely going to sign him outright to be their backup. He's been receiving a top AHL salary to play in the Flyers organization. If they offer him a similar deal, he'll jump at it.
