Who did they sign?

I wonder what Gallagher gets....best analytics in the game. Miles ahead of the boys making the top bucks.

- Garnie

They are apparently giving Edmonson 3-5 years for 3.5 per.

I wonder if the league will allow some teams to suspend operations, as opposed to folding. It would make more sense.

Although it becomes horrible optics if the Seattle franchise paid over a half billion dollars, and then the Panthers get sold for $125M.

- Atomic Wedgie

This is where the league is in a bind. What VEGAS and Seattle just paid..they can't really turn around and let franchises move. But they might have too.

At this point, what can you do with the Coyotees? They were barely hanging on before this mess started.

Thanks old feller.

I knew the homers would hate it. But anyone looking to actually improve the current team and fill holes needs to be open minded. This is the best window of opportunity I remember for the Leafs since the early 90’s. Do whatever is necessary.

- DrunkenCanuck

sure but if the price is too high then you move on.

League should just allow the Leafs to take any player off of any team they want..

Of course, we’d still (frank) it up.

Haven’t watched him play enough. He’ll look good on the Habs I’m guessing, since they always have the puck.

They should have just shut everything down until the New Year and we’d be good to go, instead it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

We can be the best team in a league that doesn't exist.
- Leafs43

It'll be Canadian teams only, they will survive not sure about 20 American teams surviving.

revenue sharing.. The Leafs will need to fund the rest of the league
- PatC80

Here's the weird thing:

MLSEL makes a lot of their hockey-related revenues from people attending games.

The list of revenues that were included in the 2005 CBA's version of "Hockey Related Revenues":

1) NHL Regular Season & Playoff Gate Receipts
2) Pre-Season Games Same prices as regular season
3) Special Games (International Exhibition Games, etc)
4) NHL National, International and National Digital Broadcasts
5) NHL Networks
6) Local Cable Television Broadcasts
7) Local Pay-Per-View, Satellite and Other Broadcasts
8) Local Over-the-Air Television Broadcasts
9) Local Radio Broadcasts
10) Club Internet
11) Publications
12) In-Arena Novelty Sales
13) Non-Arena Novelty Sales
14) Concessions
15) Luxury Boxes/Suites
16) Club/Premium Seats

17) Fixed Signage/Arena Sponsorships
18) Temporary Signage/Club Sponsorships
19) Dasherboards
20) Parking
21) Other Revenues (sale of game-worn jerseys, skills competitions, open practices, etc)

Yeah, the local TV deals are great, but they are actually just paying themselves.

Can the Leafs survive a season of no fans? Yes.

But I would argue they are going to see a larger drop in actual $$$$ from a fanless season than any other club.

They got a new owner.

But that situation is franked.

No way in hell that they are going to get public money for a new arena in Arizona.

No way in hell they are going to have a competitive team for the next five years.

Hell, if I'm Houston, I'm probably more interested in trying to acquire the Panthers - at least they have draft picks.

This is so far out of my realm of expertise (in that I don't have a realm of expertise) - I don't even know what a "suspension" would look like.

Would all players on a suspended team become UFAs? Would the NHLPA be OK with that? Dispersal draft? Then would the team be allowed to come back with no contracts in a year or two?

I'd imagine a bank would be OK with this scenario, as it would preserve some of the value. I can't imagine you'd have too many buyers right now, so bankruptcy would surely mean pennies on the dollar.

I'm wildly spit-balling here.

While everyone talks about "Cap Space", there's also the issue of organizational budgets. How much you spend on management, scouting, training ETC. It's really tough to win if you're at the bottom on that every year. Do they even have any scouts overseas?
The debt mounts yearly as well. And now revenue sharing, which is counted on will be far lower. It's really tough to truly be any good with all of this against you.

The new owner got excited and spent more on his first year but now apparently he' scalling back big time. (He also is in the casino business, ouch).

Yeah. Things are ok in my household but summer is over, cold is here, no organized sports, few opportunities for outdoor adventure, and the cherry to top it all off is we found mold in our basement walls so gotta haul ass on that if we're gonna be staying in all winter and crushing the central heat.

Not feeling super optimistic about the next 6 months.

I've wanted to say it since I heard it on Letterkenny. Made me laugh.

But yeah, 6 or 7 games where it was still bugging him. I'm technically correct, the best kind of correct.

Not sure why Toronto fans are so schadenfreude about Kawhi losing.

He won us a championship (thank you) and then he did what we expect every hockey player born in Ontario to do: he went to his home team to try to win them a championship.

I'm not sure how this can be right - I'm looking at the NHL website on the draft rules, and one bullet states:

* All players with no movement clauses at the time of the draft, and who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected and will be counted toward their team's applicable protection limits.

To me, Muzzin will have a NMC "at the time of the draft."

Oh well. I'll just wait and see.

Edit: it may be that the expansion draft looks forward one week - applies everything to the next year of contracts (7 days later) - which would make sense. I don't think you can expose guys who don't have contracts. Not sure if this is a loophole - could you not expose Rielly because he isn't under contract, but then sign him to a contact the day after the draft - before he becomes a UFA?

- Atomic Wedgie

You can expose RFA's but not UFA's.

Yeah he's a legend. Not a huge deal he left. I more laugh at what the Clippers gave up for only 2 years next to what Masai gave up and the results he got.
