The only comparable is Rantanen, so by that account Marner is overpaid by about $1M.. Aho is a C, and the Habs messed that offer sheet up, so he doesn't count. - PatC80
or the habs proved why you don't have to overpay for your rfa's. because nobody else will. |

Why wouldn't he? Half the money was paid upfront.. - PatC80
Because he could have gotten more?
The money up front should be a factor. But apparently Leaf RFAs get both overpaid in terms of cap hit and cash upfront.
Damn we really suck at contract negotiations.

I got what you meant the first time. Just tried to take it in a different direction and embrace (frank)wit max's assessment that people who wouldn't / couldn't pay for testing are drunk high and smoking while plowing whores... All at the same time.

what if, and just thinking outside the leaf fan brain a little...what if they are better?
like they get better results...Freddie/Campbell is better than Freddy/hutch to start (assuming no goalie moves)
Barrie and Ceci gone...is good...based on 500 leaf fan reviews.
So let/sandin cant be worse....right...impossible
the leafs didnt have a PDO high or anything like that. The could end up having a better season - senstroll
Unpossible. |

Aho 5 years ...another UFA year would have bumped him up to 9+
Rantanen ...yes, 9.25 is a good comp.
That's 1.6 on Marner's overpay. Not 3. - The Law
i see your points. agreed. 3 was to high.
i'd still say it's a 2-2.5 overpay. |

Supply and demand, his kind of player isn't in the huge supply category. I would guess there's at least a handful of teams around the league who would give him 3 million per year. Just a hunch though. 🤷♂️ - joel878
I'm thinking he has a lot to prove still and the market isn't exactly hot for any player. COVID-19 is killing market value. 🤷♂️ |

It's not that it isn't interesting (cheap upside has more value now than ever) ...But, Leafs can't add cap space without moving it out.
So sure Robertson is a moveable asset but one or more of those $$ fwds is on the move if the D is going to be improved. - The Law
My idea is that you trade Robertson and Johnnson for a RD, but that team has to retain salary, making cap hits similar (or make the deal bigger so that we take back more actual $$ payments, but get cap relief).
Was originally going to make an absurd theoretical proposal with Ekblad, but it turns out he has a super-weird salary structure, including $4M in signing bonus that has already been paid this year:
https://www.capfriendly.com/players/aaron-ekblad
So I doubt Florida moves him.

so far this year:
out:
kapanen
barrie
ceci
clifford
in:
robertson
lehtonen
sandin
rodriguez
re-sign dermott and mik and we'll have maybe a mill of cap space open.
we'll be younger, but not better this year. - Tumbleweed
My napkin math ...Leafs aren't carrying 8 dmen so IF they add another D then Dermott is packaged out unless he's willing to come in really cheap. IMO, both sides decide it's best to move on.
So that leaves about 5 milly to sign Mikheyev and a replacement D. What I've seen is guestimates of between 1.5 - 2.0 for Mikheyev. So they've got about 3 milly for the Dman right now and have options to create more cap space.

Who knows, what he would have been offered by Carolina had Montreal not given him an offer sheet. Personally, I think, he could have gotten more $$ if he was willing to wait, but he was right in signing the offer sheet.. It was a lot of money up front |

Wouldn't it be nice if you could trade retained salaries? What's the logic behind disallowing this?
Would be nice to get Phil Kessel's 1.2M off the books, amirite? |

Out is what, $9 or 10M? I don’t really remember? Robertson, Lehtonen and Sandin are all already here and less than $1M each. Dermott they may sign or move.
In any event, it makes no sense to come to a conclusion at this point. They’ve created some flexibility. Let’s see how it gets used.

i'll agree on the goaltending. that should be good for several more wins next year.
barrie still added some positives to the lineup. ceci wasn't good, but i didn't hate him terribly last year. i can't see 2 rookies being better than those 2 next year, more likely worse. though maybe down the road they'll be better.

Maybe, it finally means Marincin will no longer be a Leaf? That makes the Leafs better on its own..
Rielly, Muzzin, Sandin have the left side and on the right side it's Holl and maybe Liljegren..
They need to bring in 1 or 2 more defenseman and then maybe move Dermott.. |

They (the owners, collectively) wanted to make it hard to get rid of contract mistakes, in the hope that it would discourage them from signing stupid contracts.

He really doesn't just draw the line at arrogant entitled peon, he really likes to shoot for complete human stain as well.
I'd still give worst overall poster to UG but that's based on sheer volume and relentlessness. If it was pure quality of poster Max takes the cake for being a complete piece of poop. |

That's a tough one and depending what the other leagues - AHL, Jr teams are doing
for the upcoming season.
I'd let him play in Jr, if he is still able to. |

Marancin is making league minimum. If they find an old shoe that they think could play better, Marincin will be sent to the Marlies (or home, as there will be no AHL season next year) and he won't affect our cap.
In short: Marincin is the least of our worries. |

i'm not seeing it. i think last year we could actually never could ice our 'full' roster. always had a player or 2 beyond the usual suspects on ltir. maybe we use the same tactics again. but assuming not, we're tight for space on a 22 man roster:
1 Matthews, Auston $11,634,000
2 Tavares, John $11,000,000
3 Marner, Mitchell $10,893,000
4 Nylander, William $6,962,366
5 Kerfoot, Alexander $3,500,000
6 Johnsson, Andreas $3,400,000
7 Hyman, Zach $2,250,000
8 Mikheyev, Ilya $1,800,000
9 Engvall, Pierre $1,250,000
10 Rodrigues, Evan $900,000
11 Wilson, Colin $850,000
12 Robertson, Nicholas $821,667
13 Spezza, Jason $800,000
14 Muzzin, Jake $5,625,000
15 Rielly, Morgan $5,000,000
16 Holl, Justin $2,000,000
17 Dermott, Travis $1,500,000
18 Lehtonen, Mikko $925,000
19 Sandin, Rasmus $894,167
20 Liljegren, Timothy $863,333
21 Andersen, Frederik $5,000,000
22 Campbell, Jack $1,650,000
Kessel, Phil $1,200,000

So the bigger question is what the (frank) is wrong with Max? Who the hell goes off the edge like that over a discussion on $50 fee for testing? A Nylander trade fight sure but if I gave a poop about the guy I’d be concerned. |
