i see your points. agreed. 3 was to high.
i'd still say it's a 2-2.5 overpay. - Tumbleweed
You think Rantanen and Aho are better players?
And they might be ...I just think the hockey world that GM's work in feels like MM's big points are worth more.
I think we can also assume MM's new contract is inflated by all/some of the 4.8 million in ELC bonus dollars his people firmly believed they were "jerked" out of by Big Lou. It was discussed throughout those negotiations. |

He really doesn't just draw the line at arrogant entitled peon, he really likes to shoot for complete human stain as well.
I'd still give worst overall poster to UG but that's based on sheer volume and relentlessness. If it was pure quality of poster Max takes the cake for being a complete piece of poop. - joel878
If you take away the aggressiveness, the irritability and the "I'm better than you" attitude that JFJ has, he's not that bad. |

That's a tough one and depending what the other leagues - AHL, Jr teams are doing
for the upcoming season.
I'd let him play in Jr, if he is still able to. - dmnted
My wild, wild conjecture is that there will not be an AHL season, and the league will be forced to allow teams to have a taxi squad of about 8-10 skaters who do not affect the cap. So it's a no-brainer to have Robertson with the big club to start the season (low cap hit), and if he is overwhelmed, he can stay with the club on the taxi squad and get practice time with the big boys.
Once again, it's my own wild conjecture. |

It's the Leafs. people think Justin Holl getting 2 million per is shocking.

Doubt Rodriguez ever plays for the Leafs.
And Jonsson is going, as is that 15th overall to add a DMan. - RogerRoeper
Wishful thinking
On Rodriguez, I heard the Leafs will not qualify him and try to sign him to a lower $$
on the contract. That could happen and he'd be in the line up. 1.5Mil for 3/4 liner. |

My idea is that you trade Robertson and Johnnson for a RD, but that team has to retain salary, making cap hits similar (or make the deal bigger so that we take back more actual $$ payments, but get cap relief).
Was originally going to make an absurd theoretical proposal with Ekblad, but it turns out he has a super-weird salary structure, including $4M in signing bonus that has already been paid this year:

So I doubt Florida moves him. - Atomic Wedgie
I'll double down on this stance.
I shop a Sandin/Johnsson package before Robertson.
We need a top 6 winger now more than a LHD, and it looks to be that way for at least the next couple years.
Sandin as a defenseman may have more trade value as well.
And really small sample size... But Robertson looked more NHL ready to me, and more likely to make an impact in the now.
I see Sandin as being easier to restock in the system as well, as I think he has the longer route to the NHL ahead of him. That leaves more of a window to draft/find a prospect through trade at LHD and develop them.
Just my two cents. 🤷♂️

trading Sandin, means you are keeping Dermott as your 3rd pairing LHD. If they package someone like Sandin, it better be for someone really, really good

Maybe, it finally means Marincin will no longer be a Leaf? That makes the Leafs better on its own..
Rielly, Muzzin, Sandin have the left side and on the right side it's Holl and maybe Liljegren..
They need to bring in 1 or 2 more defenseman and then maybe move Dermott.. - PatC80
IMO, it most likely shakes out like this ..
Rielly - New guy
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Lehtonen
7th Guy
Let Sandin and Lehtonen get sheltered minutes all year and at the deadline make a move to add a vet dman rental who lets everyone slide down a notch.

They (the owners, collectively) wanted to make it hard to get rid of contract mistakes, in the hope that it would discourage them from signing stupid contracts.
***Narrator's voice: "In the end, it didn't.*** - Atomic Wedgie
The logic really doesn't make a lick of sense.
Why not allow other teams to prey on those mistakes? There's a lot of value to be had for assuming those mistakes. |

I think you could keep dermott... But it doesn't mean you have to. Lehtonen may fill that slot, the FA market always seems to have bottom pairing left handers available as well.
I don't think keeping dermott is the worst option ever. Hes still got room to mature and is more nhl ready than Sandin at bare minimum. |

what if, and just thinking outside the leaf fan brain a little...what if they are better?
like they get better results...Freddie/Campbell is better than Freddy/hutch to start (assuming no goalie moves)
Barrie and Ceci gone...is good...based on 500 leaf fan reviews.
So let/sandin cant be worse....right...impossible
the leafs didnt have a PDO high or anything like that. The could end up having a better season - senstroll
I think by default they'd be better next season, even if no moves are made at all.
Can't possibly be as injured as this past season, no players hating the coach to start the season, and like you said; Campbell >>>> Hutch. |

i'm not seeing it. i think last year we could actually never could ice our 'full' roster. always had a player or 2 beyond the usual suspects on ltir. maybe we use the same tactics again. but assuming not, we're tight for space on a 22 man roster:
1 Matthews, Auston $11,634,000
2 Tavares, John $11,000,000
3 Marner, Mitchell $10,893,000
4 Nylander, William $6,962,366
5 Kerfoot, Alexander $3,500,000
6 Johnsson, Andreas $3,400,000
7 Hyman, Zach $2,250,000
8 Mikheyev, Ilya $1,800,000
9 Engvall, Pierre $1,250,000
10 Rodrigues, Evan $900,000
11 Wilson, Colin $850,000
12 Robertson, Nicholas $821,667
13 Spezza, Jason $800,000
14 Muzzin, Jake $5,625,000
15 Rielly, Morgan $5,000,000
16 Holl, Justin $2,000,000
17 Dermott, Travis $1,500,000
18 Lehtonen, Mikko $925,000
19 Sandin, Rasmus $894,167
20 Liljegren, Timothy $863,333
21 Andersen, Frederik $5,000,000
22 Campbell, Jack $1,650,000
Kessel, Phil $1,200,000
Total $80,718,533 - Tumbleweed
Depending on how much they intend to spend to upgrade the D, Johnnson, Kerfoot and Dermott seem top candidates to be moved. Maybe they look to spend less in goal (scares me) and they can carry less than 22.

"New guy" better be Petro in that scenario.
Having said that, I think Muzzin-Holl isn't such a bad combo. I'd like to see what Holl can do with an increased role playing beside a responsible partner. |

I like our blueline a lot more with Holl on the bottom pair able to step up if needed from injury.
A Lehtonen/Holl third pair would be a sign to me that our blueline is perhaps not complete and total poop for the first time ever. |
