Question for funsies, if the leafs signed Pietrangelo to 9 million x 5 to 7 years would you be okay if the leafa then traded Marner for picks/prospect/cheap fill in winger? |

Wouldn't it be nice if you could trade retained salaries? What's the logic behind disallowing this?
Would be nice to get Phil Kessel's 1.2M off the books, amirite? - mjones242
This upcoming season and next and then adios
what's a couple season in the scheme of things
but yes I agree. |

I like our blueline a lot more with Holl on the bottom pair able to step up if needed from injury.
A Lehtonen/Holl third pair would be a sign to me that our blueline is perhaps not complete and total poop for the first time ever. - joel878
Rielly-Parayko/Pesce
Muzzin-DeMelo
Sandin/Lehtonen- Holl
That would be fine with me |

And that's without even scratching at his non hockey related items. The guy is a scab who requires picking and flicking. - joel878

Not too sure about that.
When has OEL, Petro, Dumba d men ever been this available?

i'm not seeing it. i think last year we could actually never could ice our 'full' roster. always had a player or 2 beyond the usual suspects on ltir. maybe we use the same tactics again. but assuming not, we're tight for space on a 22 man roster:
1 Matthews, Auston $11,634,000
2 Tavares, John $11,000,000
3 Marner, Mitchell $10,893,000
4 Nylander, William $6,962,366
5 Kerfoot, Alexander $3,500,000
6 Johnsson, Andreas $3,400,000
7 Hyman, Zach $2,250,000
8 Mikheyev, Ilya $1,800,000
9 Engvall, Pierre $1,250,000
10 Rodrigues, Evan $900,000
11 Wilson, Colin $850,000
12 Robertson, Nicholas $821,667
13 Spezza, Jason $800,000
14 Muzzin, Jake $5,625,000
15 Rielly, Morgan $5,000,000
16 Holl, Justin $2,000,000
17 Dermott, Travis $1,500,000
18 Lehtonen, Mikko $925,000
19 Sandin, Rasmus $894,167
20 Liljegren, Timothy $863,333
21 Andersen, Frederik $5,000,000
22 Campbell, Jack $1,650,000
Kessel, Phil $1,200,000
Total $80,718,533 - Tumbleweed
Last year with them being over the Cap and into ltir they got to carry a few extras (in fact they had to) ...22 or 23. This year, like a few other teams, they'll carry 21. And who knows how things will work if they bubble ...maybe you carry 20 plus a "taxi squad"? But they really only carried one meaningful spare (7th D) last year when it mattered and I think that's all they HAVE to do this year.
So I'd drop the 13th fwd, remove Dermott (because we're going to replace him), and no way am I giving Spezza a raise!
So add in that 2.5 and you've got close to 3.5 to add that D-man.
Not enough ...need to find another 1-2 milly to get a mid-level guy or another 5-6 if AP is at all realistic.

Only when we can’t afford them. I would say take a chance if there was a reasonable certainty that the cap was going to start to rise soon. Petro becomes an issue if we’re stuck at or near this level for a while. |

Thats all bs.
Insiders suggest TOR and VGK are favourites to land Petro.
Most teams are up against the cap.
What matters is the contracts on your team and how moveable they are.
Can you add Petro and subtract cap hits and be better?
Given the structure of the Leafs contracts I fully believe they can make room for a star d man. |

That's exactly what I'm dreaming of. I settle for Connor Murphy or Damon Severson on that top pair.
If we're being really budget conscious I'm also happy with
Rielly/Weegar
Muzzin/Demelo
Lehtonen/Holl
Weegar did not look out of place with Ekblad last year... And he was playing his off side doing it. |

That ADHD thing was enough for me. I can scroll past his dumb(frank)ery with about 50/50 success most of the time... That one did me in.
UG is unbearable because he's arrogant and condescending at the same time. He's the only one that ever knows anything and his way is the only, you're stupid if you don't get that.
I'm positive both do it because their own lives are lacking kicks so hard this is it. |

I appreciate that you have an uncle named Bob, but that new guy better be someone like Ekblad.. Only 24 and hopefully he only gets better - PatC80
For it to be AP ...lets assume he'll cost 9.5 ...gotta clear another 6+ milly (bye Willie).
For it to be AE at 7.5 ....gotta clear another 4+ milly (probably bye Willie but maybe Johnsson and a cheaper starter in net could get it done).
For it to be a more simple upgrade at say 4.5 ....just need to either move Johnsson or find that cheaper starter in net.
I'm sure KD is making every call he can to weigh the options. |

Sandin, I think, will have the 3LHD position locked up unless he completely falls flat on his face.
This leaves Holl/Lehtonen on the right-side. I'm thinking Dubas will want to see how they work out on the right side of the bottom two pairs. I'm not terribly confident either will be up to the task... especially Lehtonen, who is a complete and utter mystery at this point.
Apparently, Mikko is a great skater who plays a decent 2-way game so he could surprise. God, I hope he surprises... |

Not sure. But I don't think Pietrangelo making 9 million at 36-37 with Marner not having even turned 30 will be a good look... |

I’m not talking about this year. We can move out guys and make it work. What happens if cap is same level in 3 years and is only going up slowly after that?
If he’s at $9, I’ll take someone at $5. |

and add Hossa's contract to the mix in a trade with the Leafs.

They'd have to trade Nylander or Marner. I don't see it being MM.
Leafs would have a hole to fill in the top 6 so ideally it'd be Nylander for a package of futures that included a young up n coming winger on an ELC. |

Sandin doesn't make this lineup as a LHD with Dermott still around. Perhaps he eclipses him eventually... But he doesn't do it as a teenager with 25ish career games right out of camp. People may not like it but Dermott is ahead of Sandin until proven otherwise.
I would like to think that Dubas has learned enough to not be comfy going into the season with either Lehtonen or Holl in the top 4. Sooner or later he has to give these guys the platform to play within their means.
Time will tell. 🤷♂️ |

Also, it doesn't surprise me that a Commie would have faith in a KHL player. |
