The NHL has confirmed Oct. 9 as the opening day of free agency. That means the Blues and Pietrangelo have less than a month to reach a deal. As I've written recently, there has been no progress. Things can change in a hurry, but it doesn't look promising at the moment. #stlblues
STL well connected insider.
It doesn’t look good man. If this was a leaf player we were talking about we would all be betting on him leaving.
Half the fan base is already betting on Matthews leaving in 4 years ffs. - Santo_44
Matthews doesn't have a family. Matthews hasn't won a Cup here. Matthews hasn't spent 10 years of his career here. Matthews lives his life under constant scrutiny in a city he wasn't born or raised in. Matthews could be a UFA at a younger age which means a bigger pay day.
Terrible comparison.

Would it be cheating if I mentioned the $12M settlement to Breonna Taylor’s family? - Canada Cup
I didn't see the over / under come with any conditions, so I'd say it's the end result that counts only.
How it gets there is water under the bridge. 🤷♂️ |

I don't disagree with you, my position between the two is if they open camp and both are vying for that last spot on the left. I don't see any world where dermott joins the pressbox and Sandin is a regular at that point.
The leafs aren't really positioned as a team who wants to see a teenager develop from learning by his mistakes at the NHL level. If there was an AHL this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sandin start there. Would it be mind blowing if he were to be loaned to a Swedish team to start the season or something? - joel878
Sorry, I stopped after you didn’t disagree with me.
I like Dermott and if it was only a question of those two positions I would be less inclined to take a chance on the kid. But if they’re going to sign Pietrangelo, trade for Ekblad and do everything on the Seagull’s wish list, they’re going to need as many lower coast options as possible.
Many everything is done and this isn’t one of them. |

Because he had a good list of reasons to stay just like Pietrangelo has a good list of reasons to stay. |

Stamkos had a better team, less pressure, at the time the GM was Yzerman whom he idolized. Not comparable to Matthews in 4 years if the Leafs haven't won anything. Matthews is actually more comparable to Tavares in Long Island than he is to Stamkos. Hell, the Leafs could win and he could still leave Kawhi style. |

Any non-US UFA (and probably the American UFAs as well) is probably strongly considering Canadian teams as an interesting option due to the poopshow USA is going to be OCT20-MAR21 (Covid + elections). Vancouver Toronto MtlN Calgary andOttawa should definitely benefit - and even Edm and Wpg all of a sudden should sound like attractive options.. |

From his Athletic article:
It was rumored that Alex Pietrangelo was made an offer recently. Do you know anything about this or possible details? Was it a final offer or will there be more negotiations? — Dane C.
Yes, there have been discussions with some numbers included. One source said the Blues were offering a five-year deal that was closer to $7 million than $8 million.
The belief is that Pietrangelo is not happy with any of the offers he has received and he’s very disappointed in the way things have been handled. Last month, I reported that Pietrangelo was asking for less than what Nashville paid Roman Josi ($9 million AAV), but the Blues hadn’t gone more than $8 million. The feeling is that the captain would settle somewhere in the middle.
I imagine he ends up at 8-8.5 over 5 years. The fact he hasn't told them to go (frank) themselves with that offer tells me he isn't going anywhere. - Leafs43
I tend to agree. I think he's going back at 8M.

It's a brand new season, they've already burned one ELC year of Sandin's, they need to trim salary where they can, and Dermott hasn't exactly proven himself to be anything but mediocre.
I think all roads point to Sandin being in the starting lineup playing 13-15mins a night.
Dermott is a nice story as he was a 2nd round Leafs pick that actually managed to make it to the show and he doesn't totally suck. But his days are done and Sandin has way, way more upside.
But yeah, wtf do I know*? Maybe Dermott stays and Sandin is packaged up in a deal? Or maybe they think Sandin could benefit from playing huge minutes down in the AHL again (Lord knows why)?
* next to nothing, especially a couple of drams deep - mjones242
Dermott was a 2nd round Leafs pick because we traded down. The Flyers got Konecny - their leading scorer thus year - and we got Dermott and Bracco.
That's not a nice story.
That's a franking nightmare. |
