Pastrnak signed for less than Nylander and he has been a top ten forward in the NHL for a couple of years - that's a good deal. I didn't say any of the Leafs couldn't be traded, and I believe Leafs do not have any really bad contracts, but the notion that Holl is a bargain at $2 million needs a little more evidence. Marner is slightly over paid in my view but I'm very happy he's a Leaf. - winsix
Pastrnak is a tough comparable. He had seasons of 27 points in 46 games, and 26 points in 51...then put up 70 in 75 games just before his contract expired.
He didn't have the consistency to pitch as Willie's camp did... And the team more than likely pitched they weren't paying huge money for an outlier one off season.
I'm surprised he didn't sign a bridge deal really...
He's had 80, 81 and 95 point seasons since signing that deal... |

It may be a mistake for the Blues. Even at $8.5million Pietro brings the total for RHD to $21.5 Million and their forward group is old and not great. Pietro will surely insist on a NTC and if that happens, the only RHD with no trade restrictions will be Parayko. Unless Steen retires or volunteers to go to Robidas Island, that salary is a problem. - winsix
So which of the two P’s do the Blues prefer? Maybe someone who knows his game better than I do can reassure me but I worry about a scenario where we pay $9 or so for Pietrangelo, the cap stalls for a few years and only grows slowly after that and 34 or 35, he’s not worth the money.
If we knew for sure the cap was going to rebound, I’d say go for it and find the $.
Maybe a trade for Parayko is the best move if it’s available. |

They've definitely worked themselves into a corner. If I were them, I'd probably have traded him last summer. But win the cup and then trade your captain? Even that's an ugly option.
They're (frank)ed no matter what they do. |

I agree with everything above, but I think we also have to give credit to the Bruins: they've created a culture where guys are expected to take a little less for the good of the team.
No such thing exists in Toronto, and it kinda pisses me off. |

Due to clawbacks from escrow, he probably would prefer they drop it in his account on day 731 (first day of year 3). |

It usually comes with a winning culture. Tampa did an amazing job creating one as well.... the number of bargains they get is infuriating.

Just for the record, Brad Marchand is a far better player than William Nylander will ever be. I love him. I would trade Nylander for him now if their ages were a little closer.
But Brad Marchand could not have gotten more on his contract at the time he signed it. Numbers matter in contract discussions. Same with someone like Mackinnon.

your hung up in the weeds.
overall, the burins have more better value deals than us.
with matthews, marner and nylander all on 5-6 deals, it was unlikely that the salary cap would increase enough to make those deals great value under normal times.
it's now looking impossible. |

Im detecting large hints of posturing as well. Who could blame him? His life is in St Louis, he's the captain of a successful team there. Wife is from there, her family there... Raising their own family there...
This is all well known knowledge, it's only common sense for the Blues to try to get him on a team friendly deal as a result... And him to posture to try and work that number up..
If I were him I'd be dumping sly comments about being frustrated and not saying no to all the Toronto speculation on the daily, because it's only going to wind that number up and result in a long term bigger money deal to play where he calls home now. 🤷♂️ - joel878
Exactly. It seems like he is just trying to get the most he can. Well see, the Leafs are also close to his parents, so its not like there is no incentive, but I doubt it.

You kayak, right? How easy is it to use a two person kayak solo or are they really designed just for two. - Canada Cup
For kayaks, i use single user however i have used a two person solo before.
So obviously its longer, loading and uploading becomes harder.
In calm water you should be fine, just try out whether its easier for you to control with the bulk of the kayak in front of you (you sitting in seat 2) or the bulk behind you (you sitting in seat 1).
Rougher waters, bigger lakes, will be harder to control the yak. |

Best case scenario for the Leafs is they resign Pietrangelo... And Parayko hits the block.
No guarantees at that point, but avoiding that big money deal which surely won't age well... And even having a sniff of a chance at Parayko is far and away the best option.
Convince me I'm wrong. 🤷♂️ |

Nylander is already great value.
As much as I wanted it to be different, at the end of the day Matthews was getting the money he wanted.
Marner? I would have squeezed his nuts until he lowered his demands by at least $1M. |

I don't think you're wrong, I just think the perfect storm type scenario in Toronto made that harder to accomplish. And by that I mean the 3 young stars having their contracts expire damn near together for the team with an endless spotlight on it. Boston just has it a bit easier to create that culture in my opinion. |

Roger... this is not some sort of videogame of 'which team has the most contracts it can trade'.
This is about winning hockey games and the Stanley Cup.
all the rest, including # of goals scored, how great the team looks 'on paper' and other similar less relevant things shouldn't matter. it's about winning.
you can keep on repeating that Nylander is better than Marchand - but Bruins have consistently outperformed the Leafs over the last years. - MaximusAurelius
Many will disagree with me, but I wouldn't trade Nylander straight up for Marchand at this point in their careers. Marchand is 32, Nylander is just starting. The better performance by the Bruins was a combination of much better defense, timely goaltending , better work ethic in general and coaching. That could change fast, Tampa looked much better than Boston even without Stamkos, wasn't close.

Boston does have better value contracts, can't argue that.. In some cases though, the players were not performing as well as they are now when they signed their contract..
Also, anyone think that if Tavares didn't sign here, Matthews and Marner would both have signed for less money? |
