Leddy would actually be a very good fit to this Leafs team.
Excellent skater, excellent puckhandler, and ok defending with his stick and good positioning - although not the defensive d-man Leafs are looking for.
It wouldn't surprise me if Leafs made a move for him - I'd welcome that very much.
I actually went to 2 Islanders games (vs NJ and Boston) while in NYC that season - that team was really really bad - in particular the goaltending tandem (Halak, Greiss) was horrible. Still, attending the games, the two players that stood out clearly from the rest of the team on an individual were 1. Barzal (by far the best); 2. Leddy. Tavares those two games was very meh. I watched some more games NYI last couple of season, and Leddy is a very good d-man. - MaximusAurelius
Leddy would be the next Barrie, but much worse. I wouldnt touch Leddy even if he was free in a trade. talk about recency bias |

We will very likely not be happy with those two defenseman at 4.5 million.

Imo, Leddy is better defensively than Barrie.
Despite his shortcomings last season, I still consider Barrie very effective on the powerplay and thus, a better offensive player.
If I had to pick one of the two on my team, I'd pick Leddy.

Leddy is indeed the much better option over Barrie - he can actually defend.
Leafs never needed Barrie - since Marner is running the PP. Adding Barrie only made the PP worse, and decreased Rielly's point totals.
Leddy is a very solid top4 d-man, and would be Leafs' 2nd best defender. |

As some have said, Muzzin could be viewed as more important/better for some. I don't think either claim is crazy.

Im honestly on the fence about that.
I guess it would depend on what we got back and what the picks turned into.
But moving a 23 year 90 plus player to make room for a 30 year top 2 D?
Dunno.
Honestly, I love JT. But I'd almost prefer:
Matthews
Kadri
Marner
Willie
Pietra
Plus our D
Than
Matthews
JT
Willie
Pietra
Plus our D
If we had to move marner to get Pietra.
But this is all hypothetical. - Fakepartofme
I agree. We have Johnny T though and we don't get to make those decisions.
I'm trying really hard to just not have any more expectations than "improvement on the D". If that comes in the form of AP then great. If it's in the form of a couple quality D then great then too.

But 4.5 million gets you lower end top 4 Dmen. (Ceci - blegh)
Obviously the actual options matter, maybe the Leafs can pick up a good value contract in a trade.
But right now, I take Pietro, Rielly and Muzzin as our top three and hope the #4 can be filled internally. (Muzzin has been a pretty good babysitter when healthy)
I worry that the options at 4.5 million a year are going to be severely underwhelming.

Both those teams plan on contending much sooner than the expiration of that contract. They have cap now in 5 years not so much. |

He actually has a house in King City already. Which is only 30 minutes outside of Toronto where his parents live.
i dont think AP would take a discount to play with the Leafs though, thats for sure. I think the signing bonus structure could help a bit however. |

AP is a significantly bigger impact then two other defenders IMO. Especially in the playoffs. Top 5 defenders make a huge difference. |

Somebody’s getting squeezed with a flat cap. I say buy one in the next tier. What matters is the price difference between AP and the next batch. If the pool is one one guy (AP) at the top and a bunch/few/whatever below that, the value is going to be in that secondary group.
Why I am the guy who has to explain the basic concepts of capitalism? |

You are ignoring the talent difference between Pietro and that second/third group.
But sure, if good defenseman are getting squeezed, and we can pick one up on a good value contract, we should certainly do that.
The evidence so far is that good defenseman are not getting squeezed. |
