Most 30+ goal scorers are $5.5M+. The really low cost guys are on ELC's and the lower priced guys got their contracts a few years ago.
A 20-25g 2-way forward is Saad... who costs $6M. Most here were lamenting that he doesn't/can't score enough.
You need to have a balance of players. You need elite skill/speed, 200' players, grinders, snipers and PP/PK specialists. You can't just have a team full of Saad's. For one, you can't afford it under the cap. For two, you likely aren't going to score enough. - Chunk
Saad will outscore Pee Wee and does so much more...

Would we end up trading Murphy for a goalie who doesn't play for 2 years and would Ottawa make that trade? - rpeters01
I should have added red font. Ottawa wouldn't do it anyway. And frankly I felt that Murphy was one of the better d-men in the play-in/play-offs.
If Stanley is considering a semi-major trade, it's kinda like Hammer and Panarin. Who on the Hawks has a tradeable contract (non-NMC/NTC) that could bring value back? Murphy is one of those.

I really like Saad, and want the Hawks to keep him this coming season. That said, he hasn't come close to ADB's production in his last 4 years. This year, he did not score as many goals, but his assists were up.
You need guys to score goals. We know. You don't like him. That in and of itself does not make him a detriment to the Hawks. |

Actually, it jumps to $9MM - but who cares - that’s Rocky’s money.
The cap hit is $6.4MM each year.
He made quite good improvements to his overall game last season. He’s 23 in December - three seasons - I think we need to stop giving up on his career before we see what new improvements come from this off-season, what adjustments he makes for next season....If he can get to be a consistent 30-goaler with an improving all-around game, he justifies the contract. - StLBravesFan
The higher salary the last year of the contract increases his next qualifying offer since he'll still be a RFA.

Yes but (a) that’s in 3 years - who knows what various situations will be; (b) that presumes no new contract would be negotiated before 7/1/2023. |

Agreed, my point is, another 1.5 seasons anywhere remotely close to last year, even halfway in between last year and his two prior years and the board will be screaming to launch him since he will become a UFA when there's no way we will qualify him with the last year's salary. |

Something else, that contract jumps to $8 the last year. When he gets 23 goals next year and has 13 goals in the middle of the second year, the whole board will be screaming to dump him because of the third year of the contract and we will never resign him. - rpeters01
If he scores 25-30 again will you stop whining about him you little female dog? |

Sikura makes 750K. He may have salaried himself into a spot this season - Elbows15
Whether it's Sikura or another prospect on an ELC, your point could very well be true and necessary given the total of bonus overages ($1,090,00) carrying over to 2020-21. |

As far as value to the team, ADB can't carry Saad's jock. |

Saad outscored him last year missing time with a bad ankle, does so much more and if he outscores him again will have outscored him 2 out of 4 years. No GM would trade Saad for Dinky. |

So here is a question what other teams needs a rd (murphy) on good contract? Then play them off each other and get bidding war to go up and get what the hawks want otherwise say no until a gm buckles. Same thing with saad. |

You're right. We have plenty of guys that can fill the net without ADB:
Kane
Toews - who isn't exactly McDavid
Saad - who's been hovering around 20 goals the last 4 years, and shot at 15% last year (4% higher than his career average of 11%)
And hopefully Kubalik is the real deal.
Screams offensive juggernaut, especially when we are poor at keeping pucks out of our net. Goal scorers are needed, more so when we really don't have many others. |

I would strongly consider your trade proposal of Murphy for Leaf's 15th overall pick, and would love it even more if the Hawks didn't have to take back a contract.
Having two 1st rounders would be sweet given how deep the opening round is.
Could they package the 15th and 17th to move up? Sure but I'd prefer to just stay put with two 1st round picks. - Theo Fox
I also would take as many 1sts and 2nds in this years draft. Even retaining $$$ on contracts to get the better picks I would do. So you can retain up to 50% I believe. Saad for $3 mil to a Cup Contender is worth a 1st+, even De Haan & Maatta at $2.25 and $2.0 is a great deal in a flat cap world. There seems to be a few teams looking for 2C and also D depth that’s cheap.
They were discussing on Calgary page how they are looking to move Hanifin for forward help. Just spitballin maybe a Hanifin + 1st + Dube for RFA Strome, $3 mil retained Saad, $2 mil retained Maatta, RFA Caggiula, and either Sikura/Prospect/up to a 3rd pick.
I know we talk Keith and his value as a veteran mentor to the younger guys, but there’s a few teams looking for that top pairing or strong 2nd pair Dman. For example, slotting him next to Carlson on the top pairing in Washington. Or playing the top pairing with Ekblad with coach Q. I still think you could get a 1st (and maybe a prospect also). He’s already 37 and not sure if he wants to play 3 more years on a team that will be just trying to make the playoffs each year. |

I've been advocating for the exact same. I just don't think you can discount the need for pure goal scorers. My only point in all this. |

Personally i think if you're trading for draft picks especially in the teens you are just kicking the can down the road. This player will probably take a few years develop and so on. Hawks need to aim higher now and go after young promising players on cash strapped teams. |

If we're throwing in the towel we don't need Keith. You said trading for the "right" picks. A cup contender would have to have somebody else's first round pick and be willing to give it up. |

ADB is a one dimensional goal scorer. He isn't going to skate the puck or dig it out in his goal scoring. He struggles to clear his own end. In sports if you get significant playing time you get stats. There's a name for those kind of players, they are called "good enough to lose." If Strome is our 2C I would put him in that category as well.
But actually I'm not ready to give up on Strome. Force a low contract down his throat and play him on a lower line and see what his game does? |

Saad and Murphy are two players where Bowman has leverage. Not so much with say Maatta and de Haan. Not impossible to trade them but tougher in comparison, at least for a high return. |
