Again... they would have to change the formula. Think of it as anyone not on the bench/ice for a game is on LTIR and not counted against the cap. They could compute the cap hit for each game by the cap hit of the 20 players on the bench/ice for 82 games divided by 82. This is an over simplification, but it could be done.

It's going to have to be done.

There will be no AHL season next year.

Teams are going to have to have a taxi squad of players that don't count against the cap.

If I’m an NHL player and this is posed to me I would shoot it down immediately!! I don’t even need to expand on why! If the league wants to cut down on travel, I suggested this before: do as MLB does; have a three game series or two games in one city back to back! It should also crank up the intensity as a playoff series does!

Hockey is a very demanding sport on the body and doing double headers is the worst idea ever. Even back to back games are draining.

Are they going to shorten the games like MLB?

playing 7 innings instead of 9 is like getting a 22 percent raise

What a stupid idea, the amount of injuries would kill the league.

You clearly don't understand the cap and how it works and what it is about. Players on LTIR count against the cap the same way any other player does. If we move off of cap hits, how about salary? Is a player paid his salary on the days that he is on this fantasy "LTIR"? Or is the players salary deducted for those days? The NHLPA would love this. The cap is an actual accounting of salary paid to the players to ensure the 50/50 split of league revenue. If a player is practicing and on the roster, he is paid his NHL salary. Unless demoted to the minors. He would then be paid his salary according to his contract.

Now what they're likely going to have to do, is figure out things like escrow. They may seek an agreement with the NHLPA to have salaries prorated in a shortened season.

This would open the door for endless injuries.

A guy who is on the ice for more goals against than for just won the "MVP" so I wouldn't put anything past this league...

So will we ever know if this truly was a new rumour, or simply a misunderstanding of what a double-header means? If someone told me this I would immediately question how the NHLPA would ever agree to 2 games in one day. And frankly why owners would risk seeing players injured all the time.

LOL, double headers. Back-to-backs yes - i.e. Arizona comes into Anaheim and plays on two consecutive nights. Probably need to expand rosters to allow for some rotation of players in and out of lineups to avoid injuries.

You mean back to backs in the same city.

How the fck can you play hockey double headers?

Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard since a canuck fan once told me that some day they’d win a cup!!!

Friedman reported back-to-back games in the same city to help reduce travel costs. This was a month ago. But Ek is now reporting a morning + evening doubleheader. From TWO sources. This is BIG!

If you have an expanded roster you could have split squads like in preseason. Not saying I like it but there are (horrible) ways to make it work.

there is absolutely no chance the NHL will have teams playing double headers

Why don't they just get like 6 guys from each team to play NHL21 against someone from the team they're supposed to play according to the league schedule. That way they can play 4 or even 8 games in a day per team and have the regular season over in a month or so.

Speaking of NHL 21, when is the actual release date? According to sources EA Sports is supposed to release it October 16th which is whack seeing how they don’t have an actual real NHL schedule yet.

When they actually do release it will they have an option to play double headers ?

No F-ing way is it ok to play 2 games in 1 day. That is totally ridiculous. Whoever came up with that idea needs to be fired.

Friedman broke this story over a month ago. The rumour isn't 2 games on the same day. Instead it's back-to-back games in the same location. Which is completely different. So Boston flies into Tampa to play them on Monday night. Then they play again on Tuesday night. Seems like a logical idea since there are no fans that are disappointed to see the same visiting team 2 days in a row. But the concept of playing a game in the morning and then again that evening is highly unlikely to be approved by the NHLPA. I seriously doubt anyone actually suggested that. If so it was some nerd in the scheduling department that doesn't understand how bodies recover from an NHL hockey game.

So is this someone reporting Friedman's rumour with a misunderstanding of what a double-header means? Or is this a new rumour that actually means 2 games in 1 day?

This could be a good idea if there are no fans still. You could reduce travel and the chances of exposing people to a virus by playing every game against that opponent at once and splitting the home/away games but have them in one location. You arent losing any gate money so who cares.

Ex: V.S. an out of conference opponent, who you only play twice anyway, have both games back to back and flip the home/away teams. For out of division games you play 2 sets of back to back, one in each rink and again flip the home/away. It could work. Its not as crazy as actually playing 2 games in one day which is the most idiotic idea ever. If that was a legitimate thought that person needs to be beaten. If its not true and EK misread the entire thought chain, holy hell thats a bad job.

The seeding format was also a joke. Let’s throw out 70 plus games and have a round robin for seeding. Then you have a team like Philly getting top seed and playing the trap against the 24th best team in the nhl lol
- QuickSCF
Philly played the trap? Can I have some of what you're smoking? They were the hottest team in the league the prior 2 months before the shutdown and earned their spot. Seems like they never found their legs in the bubble as many other teams didn't. Good luck with that!
