What in the actual fvck...I get back from my break to this sh!t. Its open season at the Pens and the other GMs know it. They know JR is f'n clueless.
I cant figure out the logic in this at all. If he and JJ are on the left side this season...if there is a season....then the Pens are toast.
Why in the fvck would he trade for a 5 mill LD? |

Everyone here pretending Hornqvist was OV and every team in the league made multiple offers to GMJR
Diminishing 33 year old winger who's getting more injury prone with a NM/NTC
Maybe it's just trash for trash and its the best we could do
was Simon/McCann/Horn anything we needed to see more of? - TheGame316
Hornquist scored the 4th most goals for the Pens this year and Matheson was a healthy scratch.
Matheson has a worse contract and plays a position the Pens already have way too many players at.
There has to be more to this. Matheson half retained? JJ going with Hornquist?
If this is legit, the next question is where are Dumo or Petterson getting traded? |

I’m told there’s a “glitch” with the FLA/PIT trade. It was definitely in progress. We will see if it gets worked out. - jimbro83
Yeah, Mario caught wind of it and put and end to it before it was all signed...

Just wait til he trades Murray and Pettersson to Detroit for a 2nd and 3rd and then goes and signs Tanev. |

Ok, I'll say this...
Mattheson is bad at hockey. He's less bad at hockey than Johnson, but his contract is twice as bad as Johnson's on a team that already has a surplus of LDs and major cap restraints. - Rinosaur
JJ better be (frank)ing gone in any form. It better not be Pettersson going. |

The only thing that makes logical sense at this point is that either Dumo or Petts gets moved out and I'd assume it's for a 3C. So potentially Pettersson is Letang's new Partner following by Mattheson and JJ.
Whatever left over money there is will be to sign Horn's replacement and someone like Bogo. |

Of course Pettersson is likely going instead of JJ. JJ isn't going anywhere. I've said this before, but everyone needs to give up on this dream at least for the coming season.

Comparing him to Johnson is pretty wrong unless you're comparing him to Johnson from 2013-14 until 2016-17. Johnson is atrocious relative to his team in every stretch of play aside from that one while Matheson is a pretty normal negative impact.
Johnson the past three years:
-5.6%, -6.4% & -7.8% relFF
-9.9%, -16.8% & -8.1% relGF
-6.0%, -9.4%, % -8.6% relHDCF
Matheson the past three years:
+0.21%, -2.3% & -1.2% relFF
-2.6%, -5.2% & -3.4% relGF
-1.4%, -2.1%, % -4.5% relHDCF
So not good, but considering his deployment in that 2nd year of the sample (44% of his TOI against top competition), I'm willing to soften my judgement of him to not lump him in with Jack Johnson. - MaximumBone

Hornqvist
-unique skill set
-glue guy / nostalgia factor
-degrading 5v5
-injury prone
-overpaid
-questionable spot in the lineup
-hard to trade (full NMC)
Matheson
-overpaid
-younger
-not great but not jack johnson
-inconsistent
-has an offensive pulse, could help on PP
-bad contract term but more flexibility for trade than Horny
-doesnt need protected in expansion draft
If this pushes JJ out the door its a slam dunk win. Given we only need him to be our 5th or 6th best d-man, gained some trade flexibility, and saved marginal cap space... I dont have a problem with it. What did you guys expect to get in return for Horny? FFS. |

Not be melodramatic, but at this point they might as well trade Malkin. Moving Dumo or Petts to replace them with Mattheson who makes more than both of them and is half as good at hockey just absolutely destroys this d-core for a long time.

This logic is so severely wrong. I've been very vocal that I think Hornqvist is no longer a good fit for this team, but he's far from trash. He's still a good player who does some good things. Calling this trade Trash-for-Trash is just wrong and it also makes the defense worse than it is now.
So depending on who takes Hornqvist's spot and while I wasn't a huge fan of his anymore, you can always do worse. You've now potentially weakened the bottom six and definitely made the defense worse. - Rinosaur
Okay, so YOU think he's far from trash. What else is out there for Hornqvist that didn't require retaining salary, or taking back salary/another player who isn't a fit either? That YOU specifically know was an option?
Maybe Petts gets traded now for a really really nice forward asset, so the net becomes
Matheson replaces Petts on the 2nd pair = downgrade?
New Player replaces Horn on the 3rd line = massive upgrade?
I don't care about Mathesons contract being 6 years, we all agree the window is only in the next 3 right?
Yes, in a perfect world, we trade Horn for picks, JJ with no salary retention, and Murray for a first, then we have so much capspace that Toffoli decides to sign here for a reasonable salary to "Play for a Winner" and we get everything we want
but that's not how it works

Who is this everyone? Most people were willing to move him as a cap dump if possible, but this wasn't it.
I'll speak only for myself, but if it wasn't for his cap hit, I'd have wanted to keep Hornqvist. |

I think I'm just going to wait until the next season starts to have any more reactions to trades and signings. See how the big picture looks when its finished. Its hard to think I will be happy with it but you never know. There is now definitely a LD and Murray to be traded...at least that. So we know we're definitely not done here. I just dont see how JJ goes but if he does all the other trades and signings will be better haha. |
