Jan Levine: Hockey Mock Draft 2020, TOR pick in, MTL on clock, CHI on deck
Pick #15 on the board...

- airjan23

Schneider is a better defensemen already, is a right shot D and plays a very solid two way game with emphasis on defense.....
Why are the Leafs taking Orourke at 15 when they could use their 2nd round pick to get him?

Horrible draft selection at this stage.
Pass on Zary and Schneider? Yikes.

Braeden Schneider prospect profile by several scouts:

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com - June 23rd: "A two-way, right-shot defenseman capable of playing the power play and penalty kill with great competitiveness and smarts. He's a more physically developed player and finishes checks with authority in all areas of the ice."

Josh Bell - The Hockey Writers - May 11th: "He can throw his body around and provide some offence."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - Apr. 8th: "Another defenceman who rates as a complementary player, but his offensive upside may develop further somewhere down the road."

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com - Mar. 20th: "A two-way right-shot defenseman who is capable of playing the power play and penalty kill with great competitiveness and smarts. He had 42 points (seven goals, 35 assists) in 60 games in the Western Hockey League."

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com - Mar. 6th: " A two-way right-hand shot capable of playing the power play and penalty kill with great competitiveness and smarts."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - Mar. 4th: "Because of a late birthday and physical maturity, he’s closer to his ceiling than many in this draft class."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - Feb. 5th: "Will be taken because of his ability to defend. However, where teams project his offence will be the determining factor as to how high he’ll go."

Tony Ferrari - Dobber Prospects - Jan. 29th: "Braden Schneider is a good two-way defender who excels in his own end. He has very good defensive awareness and moves the puck up ice quite well. His offensive upside is a bit limited but he isn’t inept by any means."

He mentioned in the blog that the selection was based on Dubas moving down coupled with his knowledge and relationship with the Greyhounds. If they don't move down, someone other than O’Rourke would be the pick.

So considering that we have been assured many times that trades aren't allowed in this draft, who was selected at pick 15 for the Leafs?

I think trading should have been allowed with limitations on the quantity of trades.
Also, everyone else shouldn’t be disciplined for one persons decision to make an abundance of trades - I take responsibility for this.

Again, Jan my deepest apologies on ruining the mock draft last year but maybe next year just run the trades and leave me out of Mock Draft.
Last year and the first year Mock Drafts were amazing with lots of interest, speculation and comments on the topic.

My apologies to everyone as well as Jan.

With the Soo connection and the history taking Sandin it's likely this happens

I wouldn't say anything is ruined.
It would definitely be more fun, even for those of us just following along, to have trades. But, would also be 100 times more work for Jan. This is fine.
I think though, that given the decision to forego trades, the Leafs GM missed on the spirit of the thing by not selecting who they thought Toronto may have taken were they also locked into #15.

Been cool so far, guys!! I've learned enough already to say that I will now watch the real draft with increased interest.

No apologies needed. Last year did get out of control, which is why when I posted the first blog on running the draft this year, the question was asked whether trades should be allowed. The prevailing view was no, that's why we went this direction. It's also why I said feel free to discuss trades with other GMs and I would post those deals in the blog.

Sorry that this year's draft has not been met with the same level of interest and discussion. Trades does mean more work but that's not why it was decided not to have them as part of the draft.

He proposed in the blog that this would be the pick if traded done. Maybe I should have told him to go with who Toronto would select if they kept the pick and then propose the pick if they traded down.

Plus, as we have seen, difference of opinion on picks clearly is the case based on the voting for each selection, including first overall.

Every draft has WTF head scratching picks that nobody could see coming. Why should our modest mock be any different?

Maybe next year you could do trades after the top 10 are picked. Also have one person be an arbiter. If its a reasonable trade it goes through, if its a dumb ass trade you have to select your pick. You only get one chance at a trade.

Open to suggestions. They were posted for voting, like picks, but if declined, that slowed down the draft since the pick had to resubmitted or trade modified.

So O'Rourke was taken by Augello at 15 then.

Thanks for confirming.

Yeah, to make it faster, one person would get to decide the trade, and they have to submit their pick and the trade they propose. If the trade is rejected the pick is what it is. Can't put it to a vote. Just need one reasonable person with no bias to decide.
