I would think that if this deal goes through that would mean that JR has a deal in place to get rid of Johnson, so it would save the Pens about $4M in cap space. Those are the tough contracts that JR needed to get rid of.

I think for the Penguins it’s a great deal . Matheson plays 20 mins a nights , last 3 years has even popped 10,8 and 8 goals which is not bad for a Dman. His contract a little rich but it’s not a stupid overpayment like Tavares

Rutherford does not care for stats at all. If he loves a player, thats it. No rhyme or reason for it. Look at the jack johnson deal. He drafted him when he was the gm in carolina and then signed a slow guy over 30 to a 5 year deal worth 3.25M. Any time he feels he is challenged, he acts like a jack ass with the reporters.

It doesnt matter that florida over paid, rutherford is stepping in to one up them. i bet he trades dumolin or pettersson before johnson when in reality buying out johnson makes everyone better. sullivan is playing johnson 18 min/night. why not play ruhwedel and riikola 12-14 min/night instead for a combined $2M when you can pay $4.9M matheson and Johnson (3.25M)? The most expensive 3rd pairing in the league.

He has 2 years left of letang and 2 of geno. he has spent this year and next years 1st round pick already. he doesnt care, he wont be around.
