By how much really?

8x8.5 instead of 7x9?

$500k in cap savings shouldn't cost the Leafs a 1st or a 2nd rd pick

- PatC80

In Lebrun's article, he mentions the idea like the 8th year would be significantly less costly for the team. Let's say a drop to 4M in salary.

I think it's a flawed logic, I understand the player can only get that 8th year through one team and cannot bank on it elsewhere.... but it wouldn't justify such a big drop in salary.

I think your example is bang on the money of what would happen.

I saw that too, Lebrun's article didn't make much sense.. There is no real benefit to Pietrangelo to get an 8th year for a drop to $4M in salary.. It could hurt end up hurting him more than helping him..

If he is still healthy and productive after the 7th year, he can sign a new contract for more than the $4M.

I don't see why he would want to help the Blues out, considering that their relationship is reportedly on the rocks right now.

I don't see the 8th year being a deal breaker.. Sign and trades don't happen in the NHL, why would Pietrangelo potentially hurt his new team by making them give up assets to get him...
- PatC80

Neither do I. I was agreeing to the sign Pietrangelo part because it makes complete sense from the Leafs perspective to do so.

I have no issue with him wanting an 8 year deal, I just hope the cost is a 6th or 7th rd pick... Heck, maybe future considerations

sure, if the 8th year is a deal breaker, it could help.. How much of a cap savings will it actually be?

Maybe a 6th rd pick, if not a 7th rounder

What’s 8M and the ability to signing Petro worth it to you?

Petro has made it very clear the structure of this contract is very important

So, after 10 pages of an AP sign and trade deal - what's the verdict?

the Leafs can structure the contract any way he wants. That shouldn't be the issue..
If he wants a 8 yr deal, that's fine but it shouldn't cost the Leafs a lot.
I like the idea of Pietrangelo, but I don't see the need to help the Blues out.

you're gonna give them a 1st, or 2nd rd pick and give them all that cap space..

I won't be disappointed... I really would like Pietrangelo to sign with the Leafs.. If the only way to do that is through a sign and trade, I'm ok with that too but not if we lose a 1st rd pick..

Maybe make it a bigger trade?

Like Johnsson, a 6th and Holl (I got your Gigsy) for Pietrangelo

If Pietrangelo and the Blues are as done as it sounds like they are, I think St. Louis is high out of their minds if they think they could/should get a huge return on a sign and trade.

It makes absolutely no sense. At all.

Getting anything at all is already a win for them, really.

yeah my thinking exactly. A trade like that would help both teams, Leafs and Blues both shed salary.. Assuming that Pietrangelo wants to be a Leaf and wants to be for 8 years, of course..

Johnsson would be worth it to me.. I added in Holl, because Gigsy
