Quotes not working...

Matheson isn't protected from the expansion draft... That I know for sure. So that's good.

Not sure about Horny . I think he's in the same boat as Matheson unless there's some age criteria? I can't remember.

I'm pretty sure Horny needs to be protected.

Can anybody tell me why we didn't keep Oleksiak? I remember the lost fight against Wilson, but that can't be it. I remember him struggling a bit playing RD, but don't remember why we dealt him. JR makes so many deals, I lose track.

If there was an award for PK of the year, he'd win it himself for that kill.

Why's that? He has a NTC, not a NMC.

Well now I'm confused, I'd have to look it up. I think I've heard him mentioned as having to be protected?

Yes. Currently the only player exempt is John Marino. Crosby, Malkin and Letang are the players that must be protected. After that, all players with NHL experience need to be designated or they are eligible to be picked.

Not looking like a Stanley Cup traveling to the town of Wampum anytime soon.

Hornqvist doesn't need to be protected. I've gotten confused on this before, but you have to have a NMC, those with NTCs are fair game to be drafted.

I think it was cap related since they were healthy scratching him a lot at the time. They also had 9 defensemen when Schultz returned with Ruhwedel, Riikola, and Oleksiak all as extras.

This was also when they thought JJ was good playing on his off-side with Pettersson. And they based way too much of their dislike for him on the failed pairing with Maatta, who didn't really click with anyone that year. It was incredibly short-sited at the time and quickly after decided they needed a physical RD and got Gudbranson who was surprisingly fine here but at twice the cap hit and without the skating.

Got it. Thanks! Kind of funny that Oleksiak actually had some good games at RD. I don't EVER remember JJ having a stretch of good games at RD. Same with Rikki. Both got caved IMO.

JR just chasing his tail in so many of these instances. I believe part of our problem in recent years is the constant change and upheaval. There's no patience. I honestly can't understand why Sully and JR never seem to be on the same page with personnel. It's really quite funny the worst player he's brought in (JJ) has gotten the most rope.

There was a stretch when they were put together when Pettersson and JJ weren't being scored on and it looked better than it was, but eventually teams were just exposing JJ on his off side being unable to handle dump-ins. Pettersson does pretty good with guys like this, and now I'm scared the actual plan might be to re-unite them and use JJ at RD again.

Agree on GMJR chasing his tail. He gets way to itchy trigger fingered instead of letting guys work their way out of slumps or even trying other combos. In Oleksiak they finally had that physical, 3rd pairing PK guy he's always searching for, yet when it didn't work with Maatta on the 2nd pair he was done and never even got tried with anyone else or even just used as a 3rd pair guy.

Ok, good to know, so no difference between the two. I think there was some confusion about the term "need to be protected," as in, "needs to be protected if you want to keep him" versus "auto-protected." So I guess NTCs and M-NTCs don't matter at all with regard to expansion drafts.

Yeah, very confusing, especially considering he is trying to trade the last gritboner-inducing player left on the team.

Man... I hope you're right. I think we're stuck with JJ and Petts will be moved.
- madmike71

That would be disastrous. I was hoping for a really good LD to push Petts down, but trading for Matheson, trading away Petts, and keeping JJ is a nightmare scenario.

Something tells me this last playoff series was indisputable, widely-publicized evidence that JJ is the problem and has to go, one way or another.

Nah bro... I mean keeping JJ is always a nightmare scenario. But trading for Matheson and then trading Pettersson for Copp would be a big net positive imo.

Riikola -marino is a good enough 2nd pair

Oh, yeah, I would do that, but I doubt WPG does. Not only is Copp a good, young center on a cheap contract with team control after next season, but I think a good 3C is a lot more valuable than an average 2LD. I think we would have to add something significant, like a 2nd.

Not to mention that WPG is pretty weak down the middle, especially with Little uncertain for next season. Have you heard he is available? WPG is also one of those teams that never seems to trade anyone.

As for Riikola on the second pair, I might want to see more of him in that role before I lock him there as the full-time starter in the last good year of the window. I like his game, though.
