But Rust was scoring 40+ points on a 82 game average. Fast is barely breaking 30. I'd say his numbers look Tanevesque.

Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I'd like a little more scoring from 3RW, especially since bottom six scoring was an issue.

He was also playing next to Crosby and Malkin. Something Fast has not had the luxury of. Sheary had 53 points playing next to Crosby. Crosby and Malkin can still set up players and improve their stats. I don't really seem Strome at the same level which makes his 29 points in 69 games not as terrible. He also blocks shots and hits. He is like a better version of Turbo.

Ok, I'll take your word for it.

Well, I'm off to bed and I can't wait to see what present Old Saint JR leaves for me when I wake up.

Rust before did score a little more though he had more consistent top 6 time and this would have easily been Fast's third 30 point season. But he plays that type of role or as someone else said Hagelin if you prefer.

I'd actually at least try him with Crosby and Guentzel and use Kapanen to boost the 3rd line scoring if we got him.

I wonder if Matheson continues to be our target if the Hornqvist deal falls through? Or if Hornqvist was just a cap dump? I wouldn't mind trying a Matheson with salary retained for JJ + type of deal.

I still have this gut feeling if the Florida deal doesn't work out. That Hornqvist is going to end up in Nashville to finish his career where he started. I could definitely see a Hornqvist for Turris type of trade happening. Turris is a R handed option and a 3rd center fit.

Or maybe a trade with Minnesota Hornqvist for Parise with money retained. It would provide us with a player who likes to play in front of the net, but also would add a different element with his ability to create offense. It would definitely add to our bottom 6 in terms of scoring. With his decreased playing time on the ice it could also add to his longevity.

If they just want to be rid of what might be a worse contract, I'd ask if they want to just swap Matheson and JJ, I'd look into it. Maybe just taking on the extra years makes them happy enough to even the cap a bit?

I think it was Friedman who said the new GM Ziti was with a team that got burned by the insurance issue from a player like Horton (might not be him) so it's something he wants to avoid. I don't know how complicated it is.

From what I gather, this just got out before it was a done deal. Hornqvist's NTC might still be in play. Not that hard to believe since it just happened to us last year.

On one side of my brain I'm hoping this trade falls through. The other side makes me think, "But wait, could the replacement move be worse?"

This trade might work both ways tbh. Hörnqvist is breaking down due to his style of play and we can't pretend he's been awesome the last couple years. We only hope Matheson can be good for his price tag.

Happened with Heatley a number of years back, too.

He basically demanded a trade, so they worked out a trade for him and announced it (thinking Oilers?), and he then refused to waive his NTC.

I wonder if there could be an issue with Hornquists NTC as it pertains to expansion? If Florida was expecting he waived his NTC but in actuality he changed his accepted trade list could that be an issue? I dont know. I dont recall a trade ever being put on pause like this with no real information.

NTC's don't have any effect on the expansion draft, only NMCs.

Crosby and Malkin don’t really increase players statistics anymore. There was a study year or ago about that.

At face value it certainly doesn't. There is obviously a second move coming right after this is completed.

If it was JJ moving, it would have already happened. Something involving Petterson or Dumo is the only thing that might make sense.

I'll throw a Petterson for Palmeri trade out there. NJ needs LD and Palmeri has been on the trade block for a while.

Would Matheson and Palmeri be better than Petterson and Hornquist? High risk but it sure could be.

Remember what Schultz was being called before going to the Pens? I do. Then he became a key piece to two cup wins.

Is it at all remotely possible that Matheson could be a Shultz 2.0 (1.5 seasons before bad injuries) for the Pens?

EDIT: Schultz's Oiler numbers look eerily similar to Matheson's Panther numbers...and at around same ages too.

I made the same point but the difference is Schultz had to prove himself while we are taking on Matheson with a 6 year, $30M remaining contract. Hope it works out.

Schultz’s play didn’t change when he came to Pittsburgh. His role did. He went from an overplayed 1D with ridiculous expectations on his shoulders to a sheltered 3D (and sheltered 2D for the second cup) and that’s what led to his brief success here in Pittsbugh before JJ sunk his game.

He didn’t get better, he was always the same player. His mistakes were limited due to deployment.

Thats true. His cap hit was 3.9, that the Oiler retained 50% of, on an expiring contract when he was traded for. Big difference.
