1 year of Staal cost NYR a 2nd rounder. JJ will cost more unless there is a similarly bad asset coming back. - MacPatty
He does make $5.7M vs $3.25M. I think either burying or buying out JJ would be worth a 2nd, but maybe I'm off-base. |

1 year vs 3 though. It’s super easy for a rebuilding team to commit to 1 year of a bad cap hit. 3 years not so much. What if things break super well and they need that cap two or three years down the road? |

Yeah the 3 years is a much bigger issue than the cap hit. |

My problem with it is if they really do have a one or two year window left adding Staal at that price doesnt help it. |

Year 3 a buyout is next to nothing. I don't think many rebuilding teams will turn things around in 2 years. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like a cheap way to gain a relatively high lottery ticket. |

Flyers re-sign Hagg for 2 years at $1.6M per so they are out of the JJ Sweepstakes®
JR, take note, this is how much bottom pairing defensemen make, not double, and not triple. |

A year 3 buyout makes it a total 4 year commitment. Regardless of the cap hit nobody is doing that straight up just for a 2nd. |

I am just going to sit here and pray that JR has one more trick up his sleeve that will land us Laine. I would trade away the entire farm. He is THE guy the Pens need, a 22 year old right handed super sniper.
Petterson, Rust, 2021 2nd, 2022 1st & Poulin. Good enough? Take Simon and ZAR too. Just get this one done JR! |

I think 50% retention plus a 2nd gets it done. I just don't have full confidence they will try and retain. |

This is going to come off as really stupid and homerish, but I really don’t think that makes us better. That trade still leaves us with depth issues at forward because we’re sending out Rust who’s one of our few excellent value contracts at this point, and our blue line becomes a disaster as we’d be trading our 2LD and asking a guy who’s underperformed in a bottom pairing role to jump into the top 4. We need to add to what we already have to fix the problems in our roster, not make trades that deplete limited depth at key positions. |

Oh for sure. At that point it’s almost entirely buriable. I’d take a 2nd with the retention. |

Too much. Laine scores a lot of goals, but he's not a franchise player. |

AZ appears, at least from what I read, to be heading towards a rebuild of sorts. I wonder if they become a destination for garbage contracts. - Rinosaur
Maybe in a year. They're pretty jammed up against the cap themselves, but have a lot of expiring contracts.
Funny how they were just a team on the rise adding Phil and Hall.... |

Honestly I'm surprised Detroit only needed a 2nd. Marleau's contract was similar and got a 1st last year.
What Vic said about 3 years is true though. Not many teams want to plan for being bad for 3 years. I'd want more for him than for Staal. |

Things have to break right for small market teams like that (yes I know Phoenix is huge, but the Yotes are not). You typically have to have home grown talent pan out when you’re not a FA destination, and that jIt’s didn’t happen with them. The young core they were banking on ended up with a bunch of “solid” players with very little high end talent. Would things have been different if Hall and Phil were coming into a better nucleus of young talent? Who knows. |

You might be right, but unlike some others I value Laine as a franchise player. Its not often a 22 year old who has 4 30 goal seasons under their belt become available. And that is without getting regular playing time with a top center. He is a 50 goal scorer playing with either Crosby or Malkin.
When was the last time a guy like this became available at such a young age? It just doesn't happen anymore. It is much easier to add depth than a guy with potential to lead the league in goals. |

Austin Matthews is heading home there in four years to put Phoenix on the hockey map.
EDIT: Glendale* Arizona*

Marleau is a terrible comp. He required being bought out. If Staal required a buyout rangers would have sent 22OA. |

You wouldn’t be able to find the cap space for Laine because you still need to fill out your roster. |

Real cash, Staal only makes 3.2 Million, JJ is still owed 9million ish, plus I think Yzerman is counting on getting a 4th or something for Staal at the deadline from a contender needing D depth
Our best option is just to buy out (around 1.2 for 6 years avg) bury JJ, 2.25 Million dead money on the cap for 3 years. It cost the Leafs a 1st for get rid of 6 Million in "real cash" so even a team trading for, and then buying out JJ would have to pony up 6 Million, or pay him 9 to be a terrible player for them. That cost seems to be a 1st round pick, which we don't have until 2022 |

Doubt he’s a 50 goal scorer playing with Sid or Geno.

False, the Canes originally tried to get him to play, but he didn't want to be there so they bought him out. Still similar dead money unless you're actually valuing Staal. |
