Doubt he’s a 50 goal scorer playing with Sid or Geno.
- j.boyd919

He scored 44 playing with a mix of Sheifle and Little as a 19 year old. Its really hard to score 50 goals, but playing with some combination of Sid or Malkin and Zucker, Guentzel or Kapanen is a massive upgrade for him. Not to mention his spot on a stacked powerplay.

I realize this is unrealistic, but some considered getting Kessel unrealistic a few years ago.

False, the Canes originally tried to get him to play, but he didn't want to be there so they bought him out. Still similar dead money unless you're actually valuing Staal.
- Tojo.

Nah. They completed the trade knowing they would buy him out.

Lol it’s just like the people thinking a 20 goal guy with matthews and Tavares is gonna be a 30 goal guy now.

You wouldn’t be able to find the cap space for Laine because you still need to fill out your roster.
- Feds91Stammer

In year 1, Laine and POJ would be the equivalent cap hit to Rust and Petterson. Year two with Laine making $9M it would be tougher but if JJ is gone it is manageable.

Is Vanek 2.0 worth crippling your cap for the foreseeable future? Do you keep blueger? What happens when Marino gets his raise?

At this point in their careers, Sid and Geno are pretty much equal to Schiefele in terms of raw production.

Everyone pegged Kessel as a 40g scorer coming to Pittsburgh and he never even bested his career high in TOR.

Not to mention Laine scored 44 once and has yet to top 36 in any other year. I have no idea where anyone can look at that and look at the history of Sid and Genos wingers and say he could nab 50 tucks. Him scoring 40 on their wings is a stretch. Especially if Guentzel is on the other side of him. There’s only one puck.

Yeah the narrative of Sid and Geno elevating anyone no matter what is long exhausted now. All comes from Dupuis and Kunitz IMO...thing is Kunitz was quite good with the Ducks too.

Not to say Sid and Geno don’t elevate. Sheary gets too much poop, but he’s definitely not a 40 goal guy. Gibson looked like a somewhat competent NHL forward for a bit on Sid’s wing. Malkin turned Comeau into a legitimate top 6 winger for a year.

But Kunitz and Dupuis were criminally underrated by everyone because they didn’t have a sexy pedigree. Those two made their own way as top 6 forwards, especially Kunitz.

Comeau had better seasons with the islanders than he did with Malkin

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Hurricanes will talk to Marleau, who has a $6.25 million cap hit for the upcoming season, and try to convince him to play in Carolina, but I think the reality is that Marleau will be bought out so that he can explore signing with his former team, the San Jose Sharks.

I didn't say they would elevate anyone no matter what. We are talking about a guy who has put up 44 goals in a season, is still very young and has probably one of the top 3-5 shots in the game.

What is the big complaint about the Pens powerplay? They don't shoot enough. Put this kid with an amazing one timer opposite Sid and Geno, good luck.

Fact is, this generation of Pens has never had a player with shooting talent even close to Laine's. If we are riding off into the sunset of Geno and Sids career anyway, I want to take one last swing at it.

It was expected that a buyout was needed and Toronto was in a worse cap bind. Not comparables.

Ok, Laine would be awesome for our PP but, I wouldn't want to pay him that big contract. Or the assets to acquire him. And he probably would be a 35-45 goal scorer on most good teams.

Yeah I think even Colby Armstrong had a little boost with Sid. There are alot of wingers we could list that didn't work though.

Dupuis was a throw in 4th liner in the Hossa trade. He was a healthy scratch/4th liner in the 2008 final vs Detroit and a 4th liner in the 2009 run.. He was known for being very solid two way but with not much of a pulse for offense. It was in the seasons that followed the 2009 cup he really started to click with Sid and Kunitz. I think Kunitz was a big factor in Dupuis success there too. The 3 of them just complemented each other so damn well. 25 goals with no PP time haha thats a pretty impressive stat. The guy was a class act too. Miss him.

I mean, does it matter? Guentz, Ehlers Zucker would be your top LW's, both wings on the third line as of now suck so that would put a good one on the third line with McCann at center. But Ehlers ain't coming here anyways haha.
