Do you think that assessment is good enough though? Do the Flyers need more good, but not great players?

Looking at past Stanley Cup winners I don't see many teams that win without a core of great players.

- Glak18

Thank you.

People often point to teams like Edmonton and Leafs and say, well look - those teams are not doing too well.

But they miss the point. Having great players does not guarantee you a cup. Nothing does. But having stars does seem necessary.

Teams that are "deep" and so on, which often means lots of players who are not top 10 in their positions but are top 25 seem to result in ultimate failure. Example: Isles this year and well, us.

PICK OF THE DAY.... not loving the few lines out there today but gotta take one. This may be a sucker bet or could be a line swing by heavy betting but I’m gonna take k/c +3.5 tonight. Anytime you’re getting more than a field goal line in a big game where the underdog has at least a perceived 50/50 chance to win outright you gotta jump on the points. Should be a field goal game either way. Now how much to bet of that $980 I’m up and you should be up too? Under the logic used above go big. Rather way you’ll still be up for the week but play for the big week. Bet $700 on game like the swami and get you some smugness. You’re welcome in advance

I agree with all of this. There are no Hedman, Point, Kucherov on the Flyers. Nothing close.
- PLindbergh31

Who was the Hedman, point or kucherov on STL when they won?

Thats right they didnt have one. A winning team os based on how the entire team plays together, not 3 players.

Tampa is there because of there entire team

I know he wasn't great in the playoffs either, but Konecny does in my opinion. He was pretty close to a point per game during the regular season. He has to continue to do that, but I think he can be.

Not that I don’t like it. I don’t love a line to jump on. It’s either a can’t miss at 3.5 to sucker you in and ravens win big or a betting line for Lamar becuase sb champs shouldn’t be more than fg underdog. I think it’s a chiefs win or if ravens win it’s only by a fg. I don’t see ravens winning big so I take the points and try for a big week. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. Can’t win without trying. If I lose I rather lose on chiefs and mahomes than say a dolphins team or something like that

it would be nice to have a game breaker but I am not sure the Blues had an all around game breaker. They have real good players. So I think you can win like that. I do think the Flyers will be set up to make an impact move, they have the pieces to trade and they can work the cap in the years to come.

the NHL has many good players who aren't considered great until they elevate their game in a deep playoff run

on any given year some players are locked in and ready to play the best hockey of their lives

it often takes a number of unsuccessful playoff runs until those players are ready to consistently bring their A game in the playoffs

Pietrangelo finished #9 in Norris the previous year (17-18). In most estimations, he is a perpetual top ten D-man for several years now.

Binnington was #5 for Vezina, and # 2 for Calder that year.

ROR was Selke trophy winner.

Over the previous 4 (15-16 through 18-19) years, Tarasenko was top 3 in LW goals scored and top 5 in LW points.

Sure, St. Louis is probably the closest we have in terms of hopeful comparisons. They play a pretty heavy game though, and we don't really.

Also, how about the previous years stretching all the way back to the Canes of 2006?

Teams that win the Cup majority of time have a top 10-15 player in the NHL. Shall we go through all the teams of the last 15 years in the Cap era? St. Louis had Pieterangelo and Parayko two pretty good dmen. Flyers don’t have a combination like them. They also had a deep lineup. They had players like Maroon and Steen on their 4th line not plugs like Thompson.

Did you see the playoff series against Montreal and New York? They were thoroughly outplayed in more than half the games.
- PLindbergh31

So a trade or two is going to change that?

Always the who are you signing to replace. Go look at the free agent list. I will keep it simple and just add 2 former Flyers. MDZ or Schenn. Hell I would offer tampa future considerations and take Coburn back over Hagg fpr 100k more.

You can easily wait it out to see who is left to sign as there is always players available.

Coburn would be a downgrade from Hagg.

I haven’t gone into robinhood. Heard good and bad things. Honestly haven’t looked too much into it. Some I know swear by it some not liking their experience. I might dabble eventually

Didn’t know Greig’s father was with the Flyers. Honestly the scouting report on the kid sounds good and he’s projected to go around where we’re picking so I wouldn’t have an issue if that was the pick.

I still think Fletch is going to do something with Ghost at the draft. If someone the Flyers are high on slips into the 2nd round I don’t think they’ll hesitate to move him for a pick.

He was just cooked as a player by the time he came here. But for those morons who say he sucked at hockey, you don't score 160 goals in the NHL if you "suck at hockey".

He seems like he has a good mentality to be a player development type guy.

- MBFlyerfan

His career numbers are actually pretty decent, which surprised me. Agree he can probably bring some good things to the organization in his new role.

[quote=PT21]In his humble defense, the benumbing experience-resistant boosterism of many here can get somewhat exasperating.

There is a difference between the club getting better and the club being a contender. With projected development of Bee and Frost, and Myers and Sanheim and even Provorov, and the health of Lindblom and Pitlick, and the long awaited maturity of Konecny, could we be better? Sure.

But is the betterment enough to make us contenders in the near to interim future?

Give me a break.

Add in Hart’s improvement and I think you meant to say the health of Lindblom and Patrick.
