Or they just hire an accountant. You can get around most of the tax difference with a retirement compensation arrangement. The tax also is only on the signing bonus and the home games. The actual difference also isn't nearly as big as some people would have you think. They bring up the states with 0 state income tax but ignore the fact that they're still paying close 40% from federal taxes.

Wow. Didn't think I'd find anyone on here referencing RCA structures. I know these inside and out. You are 100% correct. The tax issue is way overblown. Entertainers also get taxed on where they perform. So the tax advantage for Florida disappears on every road trip whereas a player from a high-taxed state gets a tax break every time they play in Florida or Texas or wherever. At the end of the season, actual tax rates are far closer than fans or media realize.

Zero chance either government gives any financial aid to billionaire owners or millionaire players, especially when they just layer off a bunch of “unnecessary” employees. I think the NHL should have stuck with the originally planned cap of 84 million and set that as the flat cap for the next 3-5 years. Teams planned on the cap going up, everyone was expecting it. They hadn’t officially announced it but you know that GMs are calling the NHL office before the trade deadline to have a rough idea of what they would be looking at for next year. By keeping the cap the same, it screws over every team and every UFA for this summer and probably next.

One way to help ameliorate the Cap Crunch that will be with us for the next few years would be to re-open the CBA and allow for greater deferrals of salary over a number of years. Right now, the coming season will see a partial deferral but it could be expanded to allow a deferral over 5-10 years. Think how much Bobby Bonilla enjoys his yearly check years after he retired. There would have to be some safeguards so we don't have another Lemieux/Penguins situation (although he turned out okay, didn't he).
You can defer salary and have it count against a future cap hit starting 5 years from now when we have a vaccine, fans in the stands, a new TV contract, and the expansion fees from the Kraken. I'd ask to NHLPA to review their use of the escalator which has caused the escrow problems. The owners can be required to make a contribution into a deferral pool each year to make sure that funds are available, and insurance can be purchased to ensure the funds are there should something happen to a franchise in the future.
