Trouba has offensive skill though, can't just force him into a purely defensive role at 8mil. - JRR1285
True, but maybe in a more limited role. I just don't want to burn the dude out playing in every situation possible. Gonna be matched up against the other teams best line, playing the 1st unit PP and PK, thats a lot of work.
with the Rangers, it's not a matter of either Trouba or Pieterangelo though
it's kind of a matter of is Adam Fox going to be better than Trouba, and Trouba with a NMC in 2023 when we have to pay Fox through the nose, these next 10 days are the NYR last chance to get out of this contract while they still can - jimbro83
I only use pietrangelo as an example because i'm sure if the rangers had not signed Trouba last year, they'd be in the Pietrangelo sweepstakes right now.
hard to say if Fox will be better, I think they're very different players. Fox is a PMD that's all about producing offense, Trouba is a big mean punch you in the mouth type of defender.
it's like comparing Weber and Karlsson back in the day.......who was better, the big tough guy who played physical, or the fast guy who played at nearly a PPG pace. hard to compare.
I think Fox will be way better offensively, but he'll never have that physical defensive edge to his game that Trouba has

No anger here,... just wondering does PMD stand for Primadonna?
'Cause, I don't see Foxy as that one iota. His skill is on display in each zone and every situation. He is certainly not that tough, stand 'em up D-man. But, he is that kind that will evade checks and sticks, will beat you to your lane because he sees the play the same time as the guy making it and will make a positive difference almost every game. (all based on rookie season, of course).
I consider a Primadonna to be someone whose attitude stands in the way of their skill. Not what we have seen here, so far.
Staal had a modified no-trade within the no-move. He was protected against being waived to minors, but also had a list of teams to which he could not be traded. Red Wings not on the list.
this really isn't a referendum on Trouba's play and what he can bring
his NMC kicks in on October 9th and he becomes immovable until 2026
every cool with that? yay or nay? - jimbro83
You certainly raise a legitmate point, Jim.
I say yay. Overpaid, yes. Not worth the contract is a slightly different thing. I think he can still be a very effective player for us.

puck moving defencemen.......
I see Fox as a "karlsson type guy" where he will produce points, and people will always assume his bad defensively as a result of that.
I would too..........I always said that Karlsson was among the most underrated defensive players in the league. people assume that playing good defense means standing in front of the net and clearing people out of the way, so they dismiss guys who have great speed, positioning, stick work, hockey IQ, etc.
i'm obviously not saying that Fox will be as good as Karlsson was (who knows though), just comparing playing style.

Totally get that.
I just get pumped because even with the offensive explosions this past season, I think Foxy was my favourite Ranger and gave me the most joy to watch.
Growing up a goalie, I have always valued strong defensive play.
I simply don't ever remember another player at the NHL level making so many guys miss while standing still!! He is SO slick!
