We simply can’t afford his contract with big extensions due for Boeser, Hughes and Elias. Can’t see it working. $8.5MM is nuts

Throw in an extra draft pick and get them to retain

Myers? What’s our right side D then. Benn & Rafferty?
- CanuckDon

I'd rather have OEL on his off side than Myers on his right side. Talent finds a way. Vegas had as blue line full of lefties and they dominated the Canucks when it came to puck control and beating the Canucks forecheck.

I'm not even super high on OEL, he's a damn good player but a bit overrated, but I still take him over Myers easily. I wouldn't make the trade unless Myers is involved.

I agree. But better contracts to move and we still need Myers

I'd do Myers ++ for OEL as well. Don't forget that Hughes said he is as comfortable on the right as he is on the left. After that sign Tanev and our top 4 is significantly improved from last year.

Ideall, we'd have neither of them lol. OEL and Myers will both look like bad contracts in 4 years while EP/Hughes are in their primes.

The key is to only acquire/retain the expensive players that will still be at or closer to their peak during the prime years of EP/Hughes which is the next 8-9 years. The less deadweight, the better chance you have to stack a team at some point like the Hawks did with a young Kane/Keith/Toews or Tampa has now.

Just avoid the long-term landmines that will really (frank) you over, the short-term ones are manageable. Like signing a really good player to a contract where he plays really well for 4 out of the 5 years before declining is perfectly fine, but you don't want a contract where the player starts falling off halfway through his long-term deal.

No.

Ya, I an't see how new professional hockey players could learn anything from veterans who have done the same job for numerous years. I know I've never learned anything from people who know how to do a job that I've just started and am learning to do at a more professional level

I'd pass unless they're willing to take on Myers in the deal

Myers only has 4 years on his contract. SO I guess you think he will be good for us over those 4 years?
Personally I think he upgrades our D from the year before, and players like Woo are still 1-3 years from being able to replace him in a top 4 role, and at least 4 years from that bigger contract that we don't want Myers on the books for. Same with Rafferty and co.

I know I would not give up a lot for OEL . It would start with Loui or Myers and add OJ and that is it. Boston can have him.

If we dump Loui and keep Myers, it stops us from needing Tanev. By the time OEL's contract is an issue, it shouldn't be an issue anymore.

Lol, good point. I think he’s already a bit overpaid but it’s not egregious so hopefully his play doesn’t take a step back during the next few years.

I agree with that. I never personally thought Canucks we trying to hard to get Tanev back unless he did it at a team friendly discount. . Good player good team mate but I always thought Canucks would try to upgrade this year.

In a perfect world a couple of Rathbone, Rafferty, OJ, Woo develop into top 4 dmen but the odds are far from 100% on that

Which is also why we can probably afford to keep OEL and Myers for the next 4 years. Aside from Hughes and EP we don't have any major contracts coming up, and when Boeser is up we can either trade his RFA rights or find some other cap dump. OEL will give us 5/7 years of elite/solid play. Personally i'd rather give the farm for Ekblad if he is in fact available, but OEL is a close second for upgrades from known dmen available. After that I would say Dumb and then Cernak.

OEL with retention that gets us to $6-7M AAV cap hit is workable. But AZ would have to be in fire sale mode to accept retention. Why rather move assets for the RFA's like Cernak.

OEL>>>>>>Cernak and probably will for at least the next 5 years. I know people look at his aav and say no, but if we dump LE we can make the cap work that will allow us to also sign Hughes and EP next summer.
