It's not all stats, didn't you mention that the other day? The Sabres have overpaid so much over the years, paid to the cap and been bottom dwellers.

I believe it to be $3.25 million
- Stripes77

It's $4,538,958 this year according to this article.

So they assumed he'd get more than they think he's worth in arbitration, but not enough to walk away from it. And then they likely lose him after one season because they spent this offseason telling an arbitrator why Kahun isn't all that good.

Maybe they think they can get a deal done in free agency because they believe the flat-cap market will set his value where the team already thinks it should be?

You are smarter than two NHL teams then and I have questioned that over the years.
- GilPerreault11

I mean I think anyone with a conscience is smarter than Rutherford.

Everyone on earth knew Jack Johnson was terrible and he gave him that contract.

He could have just kept Kahun and saved a first.

Kahun is good. He’s 25, can score, can play defense, can skate. He wasn’t going to cost a lot.

There’s a single reason he wasn’t qualified. Cheapness. That’s it.

- sbroads24

If it was cheapness, Montour would've been let go.

My hope is that Montour was kept because he is moving him in a trade.

If not then we are franked.

Kahun even strength points per 60 last year: 2.56, which was 25th out of all forwards in the NHL.

Two players tied with him? Elias Pettersson and Jonathan Huberdeau.

Being penny pinchers on him while maintaining their horde of defensemen, including saying they think Montour improved and he can play the left side well (he was terrible on the left last season), proves they continue to be a rudderless ship amid a steady sea of bad decisions.

I honestly don't know
- Michael Pachla

You are right Pach's, so his AAV is 3.775mill, so he would probably ask for atleast that with Arb rights. Is he worth that yet.

What are you assuming? That Adams wouldn't trade Kahun? For a first round pick?
- Michael Pachla

That Pittsburgh is ran by a bad GM, so using his assessment of Kahun is pretty silly when the guy gives up a first round pick for a similar player

It was cheapness mixed with a terrible opinion on players:

on Montour Adams said they like him a lot and can play both sides. He said the coaching staff believes he took strides last season.

They've constantly overpaid for poop players like Vesey, Montour, Ristolainen, Sobotka, Berglund, and on and on.

Kahun is actually good.

And Kahun can play all three forward positions

It’s so frustrating

Remember when this same board almost collectively stroked out while waiting for Vesey to choose his team.

I 'member.

Everyone says they use analytics.

However I firmly believe only the Canes actually act on it.

Their drafts the past few years reap the benefits of it.

- Pegullaville

How can you rely on analytics when prospects come from a multitude of leagues. Do you handicap results based on the league the prospect played in.
There are just too many variables that would suggest to me it’s a total crapshoot. Every team can probably rattle off 5 mistakes with early picks and 5 surprises with late picks.
Taking the sniper with pick 8 is based heavily on his ability to score from anywhere but the big question is can he do it at the elite level. Only time will tell.

The trades for Skinner and Kahun were quick highs for GMJB. I have some respect for KA if he doesn't go for the quick high. Don't you think other smart GM's could have traded for both of them but our GM took them for crap, no other GM's wanted them for crap, why? I mean I'm sure Rutherford liked Coner Sheary but if he got a better player/offer I'm sure he would have taken it.

Captain Jack would have noticed that Kahun can play a little. Considering all the lousy teammates he has had during his tenure here, I’ll bet he was pleasantly surprised by Kahun’s game.

Jack can’t be pleased with this development.
