But from a negotiating standpoint, the agent would never agree to a new deal with arbitration on the table. He has all the leverage. The worst case scenario for Kahun at arbitration is the contract he already rejected. I mean, I guess the Sabres could just capitulate and overpay Kahun by so much that he re-signs, but then we'd all want to murder GMKA.

If you're an arb-eligible player that can actually play hockey in the NHL and won't get an award >$4.6M, there's literally 0 incentive to not go to arbitration. You will get at least what you've already rejected.

- JetpackJesus

The ARB contract is only a one year deal. The agent would accept a new deal before the arbitration if it were a multi-year deal that was thought to provide greater benefit than the 1 year ARB and the year 2(and after) market risk.

Changed my perspective on Quinn and makes his early career lack of production make perfect sense

Thanks man. It’s good to hear they are still talking. I still have a little faith in the moving and shaking that may make us a better team!
- Gr8daygo

I really hope it does too, this fanbase could use a little excitement.

That would be awesome. I think the Sabres and most fans don't think Kahun at $3.5M is a value contract, though.

If you do, I get why you're upset.

- JetpackJesus

And most fans think he’s going to be awarded a $3.5M arbitration award however most of his comparable deals are roughly around $2.5M.

I mean, sure. I don't think that's the case in the world we live in, though. The before-times don't really matter anymore this offseason

I highly doubt the offer Kahun's agent rejected was for only one year. Again, there's no incentive to accept a deal if you're an arb-elgibile player who will make less than $4.6M. You will not get less than the team already offered you. If the team actually offered a good deal, your agent would have accepted unless (s)he's incompetent.

It seems like the NFL really wants this Bills-Titans game to be played on Sunday somehow.

My guess is that it's more likely Bills-Chiefs gets moved from Thursday to Sunday than Bills-Titans getting cancelled/postponed.

Aren't there cases where arbitration can award a 2-year deal?

Anyone know if there's a legal tampering period this year? I assume it happens anyway. Just curious.

I thought they started doing that a couple years ago

- jcragcrumple

There's not, but as you said, it happens anyway.

If the player is not in the final year of RFA then the party who doesn't demand arbitration can elect to have the arbitration determine a two year deal.

This is a really solid post.

Same people that argued kahun was a 2nd liner (39) in some posts.

The Sabres are not "over paying" for a decent player.

Congratulations for once to the Sabres.

Crags, could I borrow a few internet points, I believe they sign him to a reasonable 2/3 year deal soon. I'm just out of points.

I've never argued Kahun is a 2nd line player, unless you mean another 39.

Literally the problem is past Arb awards. In today's NHL economy those players would get paid less, and splitting the baby results in an above-market deal. As one of the only teams with cap space, could they spend that money better elsewhere in FA? Will they? I don't know. But the assumptions in here are out of control.

PS: In not-2020, Kahun gets a QO.

- JetpackJesus

So based on the theory in the paragraph above, why not take that approach with most if not all of the RFA's?

GMKA always lands the Big Kahuna!

Wasting away again in Kahunaville...looking for my lost arbitration award....some people claim that there's a woman to blame (Kim?), but I know....it's nobody's fault.

Just say "Kahuna Matata"

They offered him a multi year deal sub $2M AAV.

He balked.

So now we are trusting our organization whom can’t seem to value their own players properly to go out into UFA and use that additional cap space to do what exactly ?
