The Teravainen at the trade date was also not the Teravainen of today - remember "alligator arms"? - he needed a couple of years at Raleigh to grow into the useful productive skater we see now.

At the time (the summer before the 2016-17 season), the Hawks were still looking for Cup contention and really couldn't afford to wait for Teuvo to get it.

Besides unfortunately needing a sweetener to dump the Bickel contract.

- StLBravesFan

Also true. I think I felt like you and a fair amount here that in time he could be a really good pro but sadly they had to give up on him too soon to dump Bickell's contract.

There was also the put him out to pasture brigade at the time.

This is what I meant when I posted about this the other day. It might be not drafting well, or it might be the Hawks minor league system. Some of the players that recieved might still pan out .... we have to wait and see. But I agree with you. If not all of these guys, most should be at least solid, if not spectacular hockey players and contributors

Interesting Tweet from Dietz today. None of the Hawks #1 picks from 2010-17 is still with the team. And those are the guys that should be major contributors now.

Jokiharju - Sabres
Schmaltz - Coyotes
hartman - Wild
Teravainen - Hurricanes
McNeill - out of league
Danault - Canadiens
Hayes - Flyers

I went a little farther and looked up who the Hawks got back when those guys moved on. Here's the list I came up with, not including guys that moved on with no return (like Weiss):

Nylander
Strome
Regula
Edsell
Beaudin
Kurashev

So, from the 2010-17 drafts, only 2 #1 drafted players are on the current Blackhawk roster, and neither is lighting up the league. Some of that has to be attributed to drafting toward the bottom of the 1st round. But not all of it. Some is poor drafting and bad trading.

Jokijarju, we know what happened there, Schmaltz, meh wouldn't want that contract now and that was what Stan was facing, I thought Regula came for Perlini? Hartman was in Q's dog house a late 1st pick, Teravainian is a dead horse, McNeil a bust, Danault Stan was going for it with Q, Hayes, which one? Looks like pretty good drafting to me and there's a reason for every trade... It is what it is.

Could be. Hasn't done anything to command too much money I don't think.

LA if hawks would want move up in thr 2nd round to 33 what would a trade look like? Have to think saad but who knows what hawks plans are for him or strome since he has yet to be qualified. Hawks need depth in every position imo. Bigger more physicality speed on the wings goaltending depth not sure lank and delia are the answers going forward. Centers with a 200ft game and good faceoffs. More grit and nastiness stay at home defender on back end to complement the smaller more puck moving offensive minded d men hawks have in their system.

Hopefully Seabrook fills one of those holes he will have to.

I think someone actually did that before and he's around the league average of I'm remembering correctly. Or I might be way wrong.

League average for drafting in below average position is not bad.

I agree. I don't think the Hawks are too bad at drafting. Trades don't always make sense to most though.

You also have to consider where the team was during the timeframe. 2010-17 they were in contention the entire time, and always going for it, future be damned (which is where we find ourselves now). They had no problem throwing high picks and good prospects at rentals to get or keep them at the top.

I will agree, like everyone else here, that Stan made some brutal moves, but he's made a number of very good ones as well (with the help of his staff).

Based on everything you just said, even explaining Danault, his two worst moves are Seabrook and the Sharp trade to Dallas IMO. Both were made for the player. A better medical report on Bickell and alligator arms is never traded to Carolina and don't think he wasn't going to be a cap problem either. Something would have had to be done to keep him.

You’re right, Regula came in the Perlini trade and Perlini has continued to have a hard time staying in the lineup on a really bad Wing team.

It definitely is what it is though lamenting the ones that got away is a pastime here. To a few others’ points, drafting hasn’t been the weak link it’s often painted and the Hawks have done pretty well in that respect.

Theo great write up. From the interview I read this kid said he envisioned himself 2 years from now playing or making his nhl debut. Short term he doesn't benefit the team .

Just curious with chicago only having 1 second round pick could you see chicago move maybe saad for a 2nd and a prospect

That's pretty much every draftee outside of the first 3-5.
