Is the implication here that they shouldn't ever draft a goalie in the second round? Or just this year? - Chunk
Not at all. Just illustrating on how much a crap shoot the draft is. Crawford was a 2nd and has been an NHL mainstay. Kent Simpson was a 2nd and his NHL stat line is 2 GA on 7 shots and .715 save%.
edit: That being said, I would have prefered the Finnish goalie Blomqvist. It takes a special kinda person to be an ice hockey goalie and the Finns as a tribe are known to be a little out there. |

I get that point and a valid point chunk but like i said earlier what is Saad's next contract demands going to be 31 points for 6million per year is way over payment imo. Yes he plays both ends of the ice and cycles well in offensive zone but with certain players like a towes. Not overly phyiscal player and seems to disappear at times in games. - Scott1977
I'm going off of the contracts that have recently been signed. There is obviously less money to go around right now and salaries will be depressed for a little while. Saad will surely be looking for a decent payday, but he will also find that there is less cash available. |

Agree. Doesn't make any sense. The other time to potentially trade would be at the TDL if the Hawks aren't in the playoff picture and get a sense that Saad's camp wants $6M or higher on the next deal. - HawkintheD
Saad and his agent have been around they will understand the lay of flat cap salary wonderland I would expect. Otherwise, he doesn't have very good representation. I look for an extension if Stan wants to go that way. |

Saad at 6 million is too much in a flat cap world. Trade him get some assets and open up another spot for a young guy. |

So what is the plan with saad did not trade him yesterday imo should've, his nmt goes into effect friday most likely won't be able to afford his next contract. Only other option is trade at tdl when the hawks are out of the playoff picture unless some big moves are made between now and January 1st i don't see this team as a playoff contending team. - Scott1977

Theo & crew, do you think the Hawks could/should have interest in signing Kyle Turris on the cheap now that he’s been bought out?
I know he was liked by Bowman & co. Years ago. He’s been a major disappointment in Nashville, but would he warrant consideration? |

He should jump at 4x$4.5. He's not worth Lehner money and next year will still be ugly salary wise. |

I feel if we can get over initial disappointment over whom was selected, one way to gain perspective is to really concentrate on whom was selected and why
I too saw clearly a few players at #17 and honestly we get attached to the prospects whose scoutjng report really entices us to hope we draft the particular player.
So was the case as I liked Mercer. Next I might have gone for a tough dman. Anywsy, when Reichel's name came out I wanted to be convinced he was worth the slot we grabbed him. This was especially true when the remark immediately came out that Bowman tried to trade down and select him a few spots later
Theo explained in retrospect how Reichel stacks up is pretty darn favorable. He checks a lot of boxes. I caught the "discipline" remark in his scouting report and put the thought down in a post.
In the long term I would not be surprised should both Mercer and Reichel become top players. Worthy of their selection, maybe even a bit of grand larceny where they were drafted.
As for the goaltendet in round two, naturally the first thought is, wow Stan doesn't think any of his Rockgkrd goaltenders has a ceiling to become an NHL starter.
Which could be true. However I feel like Laakinen could be adequate and dedcent in all aspects with not getting rattled underscores hus true value. Delia being athletic and a leader, emotional edge description sort of makes me wonder if he might be one of the older AHL goaltenders whom comes into the NHL and carves out a productive few years.
Again there was comment how our goaltender could have been drafted perhaos a few spots later. But I do not mind being aggressive so that we get the goaltender Bowman liked best. Also again there was another player I rrally would welcome to have been snatched up instead of the netminder. That's right, wiz called for Dufour.
In retrospect we came away with two solid choices. Drafting more for need than best avaliable talent is not how I prefer, but with the goaltender he might be about where he was expected to go.

So now at #62 Dufour still on board. But does Kelly & Bowman trade up for someone they especially like? He would be not only a good value pick, but fills the need to draft a bruising forward. |

Not going to get fair value dumping salary. He's still young, no guarantee he won't get extended. I'm the guy who dumps Dinky before Saad. |

I was wondering the same thing. He's obviously not worth what Nashville was paying him, but he is still a useful NHL player. Maybe he comes in as 3C. I'd like to see what Strome could do if he was given an off season to train as a winger.

Plus there are too many teams currently desperately trying to dump salary, (i.e.Vegas, Toronto, Tampa () that I would say it is a buyers market. I think it could become even more of a buyers market if some RFA's get an offer sheet (how much does Barzal want, that could put even the Islanders in the position to dump some salary)

Hawks don't need another forward that is allergic in his own zone.

I'm seriously wondering what arbitrator's are going to do? If they use past salaries they will just be franking things up and turning players into free agents. Past salaries aren't going to mean didly for a while. |

Did we trade 78? Draftsite.com has us at 78, but NHL Network has us at 79.
ETA: Draftsite doesn't count the forfeited AZ pick, I'm guessing NHL Network does. |

The Hawks can finally right the wrong from the 2007 draft when they should have selected Turris 1st overall.
