So now at #62 Dufour still on board. But does Kelly & Bowman trade up for someone they especially like? He would be not only a good value pick, but fills the need to draft a bruising forward.

See that now, sorry. Landon SLaggert is the pick. Was totally hoping they'd nab him.

U.S. A.  Developmental team whose father Andy is an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame, where he has committed. As are most of the USA players, he has a high hockey IQ sound decision making instincts and good all-around toolbox and skill. Does everything well but doesn’t have an outstanding strength that would classify him in a more dynamic fashion. He is a very good balance skater who has a very good wall game, a good cycle, and strong, hard forecheck. Mature and a great teammate who can play up and down a line-up in various roles but projects as mid roster. In 2019-20, Slaggert appeared in 66 games scoring 34 points.

Wyatt Kaiser DMinnesota high school blue liner with smarts, vision, poise and plenty of mobility. Will not stand out as having elutr charactersitsic but simply gets the job done with good defensive zone positioning ans stick placement. Advances pucks quickly to the right options. Dipslays short area quickness and has a nice wall and corner game. Very mobile and poised and will pinch down or drop back door, but is not a gambler. he wants to play his position without leaving his team susceptible to odd-man breks. Committed to the University of Minnesota-Duluth. (=Big into cerami=cs)

Not at all. Just illustrating on how much a crap shoot the draft is. Crawford was a 2nd and has been an NHL mainstay. Kent Simpson was a 2nd and his NHL stat line is 2 GA on 7 shots and .715 save%.

edit: That being said, I would have prefered the Finnish goalie Blomqvist. It takes a special kinda person to be an ice hockey goalie and the Finns as a tribe are known to be a little out there.

a note on Slaggert. Take his point totals with a grain of salt. Against his age peers, he was PPG last season. Another kid who plays both ends of the ice.

Or they can possibly resign him. It's not a bad idea to have a couple middle aged vets for when the sun sets on the Dynamic Duo, Duncs, Seabs, etc...

Maybe I'm a bit over stating this but chicago as of right now basically have the same tean that for a pandemic they would have missed the playoffs. Now looking at their cap issues this year and major holes to fill , how would stan find more money next year with many of his players already locked in for 2 more years ? I'm sure saad will either be looking for the same or a couple. Million more?

I agree the window to move him was earlier but unless seabrook comes down with a mysterious illness chicago is going to struggle heavily

Could be nothing. The Hawks' staff just like the 2 players they picked better.

It looks like Markstrom is testing free agency. Would he be worth a Lehner-type deal?

Not for the Hawks. They don't need a 5M goalie right now.

Oh and as I feared, Zach Smith is not being bought out. Maybe his back is still messed up or someone is planning on having him visit the Khabby stairs.

I like each pick a little worse, pick 1 I was Ok with might have been my 2-3rd choice, pick 2 they seemed to take a goalie even though it did not feel like it was the best player available beacuse of ORG need. the 3rds look like the old hawks who only take US players so they can control them 1 more year. I probably take Mercer, Maysek, then 2 of Jurmo and Daws Dufour bedner with the 3rd rounders.

Wiz, I know you have a lot going on today, but what are your thoughts on the Hawks' last 2 picks?

I mean, obviously you had Dufour ranked higher, why do you think Chicago went with these two?

Hawks had the youngest team that made the play-in, and will be younger at the start of this season (Matta gone, assuming Smith gone, Shaw might be LTIR, and Seabrook). There is something to say about internal growth and maturity. The Canucks and the Flyers took that stpe last year. Hopefully the Hawks do this year.

Major holes to fill, defense Matta, Gustafsson out, Bovquist/Carlsson in. possibly Mitchell.

Goalie. Crawford making $6 million last year, I doubt the goalie position in total for the Hawks equals $ 6 million next year. With the goalie market definitely bding a buyers market, if Crow leaves, there will be a competent NHL goalie in net to start.

The only RFA that could possibly command money next year, would be Nylander, and if he has a breakout season, I for one would love to have that problem.

Are the Hawks in the top tier of the league? far from it, but I think they will make the playoffs next year. St. Louis and the Preds haven't done anything to improve themselves, Minnesota, Guerin is burning it down. Colorado is right now the class of the division. Dallas has problems too, it came together for them this year, but they are definitely not without warts.
